Mount Clemens is the oldest city and the county seat of Macomb County.  In 1862, healing mineral springs were discovered.  Mount Clemens soothed sufferers from around the globe who flocked to more than 40 bathhouses and hotels to drink and bathe in the revitalizing waters.  This era lasted from 1873 to 1940 and gave the city the nickname of “America’s Bath City”.

Mt. Clemens is one of my favorite downtowns in Metro Detroit.  It's like Pontiac...you know...with density.

Looks a lot like Bay City.

smells like bay city

Cool little business district.

Its pretty cool how the brick bldg, on the left, curves with the street!

I wouldn't take a bath there.

^A sentiment shared by most residents of Mt. Clemens.

I tease you, Mt. Clemens...

Ink is probably drooling over this picture LOL :)

Nice shots of Mt Clemens.  I've only driven through once, but didn't stop.  It's been on my list of places to see.

Thanks for showing something nicer than Detroit! That city has more problem areas than my ex girlfriend.

So I was.

Great photos!

Nice infill!

It seems like Metro Detroit has an endless numbers of these established towns with functioning downtowns as suburbs.

^ Birmingham being one of my favorites.  Zach, I don't think you've posted photos of B-ham yet have you?

So what building is the current courthouse? The deco tower?

Royal Oak :)

Looks a lot like Bay City.

I think it looks a lot better than Bay City.

Some interesting buildings, both then and now. That old courthouse was pretty impressive; shame it's gone.

Nope, I've only been there once which was a long time ago and it was raining pretty hard.  I've been meaning to go back though.

^A LOT of cities do.

Norwood? St. Bernard? Grandview Heights?

Well that is what you said, suburbs that are urban.  You didn't say anything about how big they had to be.

I was using Hamtramack and Lakewood as examples of large, diverse, and very high density suburbs. In many ways, they're more urban than their respective mother cities.

St. Bernard and Grandview Heights are basically the same as Waterville, Washington, and Old Sylvania- fairly dense and walkable? yes. Big, diverse, and self-sufficient? No. Covington would be much closer to that, as it kicks urban ass in most ways.

St. Bernard and Old Sylvania are nothing alike.  Grandview Heights is urban, young, and "trendy."  Which is UNLIKE St. Bernard, Old Sylvania, and even Hamtramck.

... the city where 8Shades was born. Zachariah, you've done a great job of capturing the cities where I've been born and raised ... it's kind of uncanny, actually.

I have a good friend that lives in Mt. Clemens, she showed me around the neighborhoods recently.  I'll have to wonder around a bit when it gets warmer.  There are some great neighborhoods there.  Wish I coulda photograhed them more.

I love the old photos of Mt. Clemens, especially the old courthouse. It looks like they had a streetcar loop around the courthouse square.

Wait, Mt Pleasant?  That's many hours away from Mt. Clemens.  I've never been to Mt. Pleasant except for CMU, but I've never seen the neighborhoods or even the downtown.

Oops, I meant Mt. Clemens.  That's what I get for talking to a friend about coming to Mt. Pleasant as I was posting these lol.

Okay, lol.  I was confused for a second.  The photos you just posted thought could have easily been taken in Mt. Pleasant though...at least from what I've seen on flickr.

Here are some old houses of Mt. Clemens.  I love how they have plaques on many of their old houses and buildings that say when they were built.

The amount of wealth that SE Michigan once possessed is simply staggering. Gorgeous houses, Clem. There's more craftsmanship and character in one of these than in an entire subdivision of post-war Columbus crap.

I visited my lady friend in Mt. Clemens again...we had some time to blow off before the movie so naturally I wanted to go downtown and wherever I go my camera does :)
