Oh, its even worse, its "U Square @ the Loop" if you follow the link At least these names are following the latest trend of removing all upper-case letters from proper nouns. It's starting to drive me insane.

October 24, 201014 yr That's a horrible non-memorable name. They should've gone with a less weird name something like McMillan District or Corridor - not glamorous by any means but more obvious and clear than what they ended up with. At the end of the day, most are probably going to know it by the shops rather than the moniker they came up with.
October 24, 201014 yr Also, I'm kinda disappointed that the survey doesn't allow more flexibility for non University affiliated people to take part and the retail options are a little limiting wish we could get a J.Crew or a Zara or MANGO or some of those options. Would be nice for his area to have a identity different from the suburbs or that we could get some nice local retail shops to open up - what's going on with the students from fashion design anyway?
October 24, 201014 yr What is "the Loop" supposed to refer to? Why not just University Square or something?

Would be nice for his area to have a identity different from the suburbs or that we could get some nice local retail shops to open up - what's going on with the students from fashion design anyway? Well, the good thing is they're giving the students a survey to see what stores should really go there. I think that'll pay off because most of the people surrounding UC are young anyway. I've been saying all along, Uptown Commons needs a pool hall. I think that would draw so many people there.
October 25, 201014 yr ^A pool hall? There are several places to play billiards around campus. Catskellar, Fries Cafe, Arlin's Bar to name a few. You must think we've got some rat-finks, rathscallions, and skeezes around these parts.
October 25, 201014 yr Those aren't pool halls. Those are places that have a few pool tables. And why suddenly defensive?
October 25, 201014 yr I'd love to see a pool hall as well. One with full sized tables that have real pockets, and that charges by the hour, not by the game. I haven't found a good place to play pool in this city since Westminster's closed.

I've been saying all along, Uptown Commons needs a pool hall. I think that would draw so many people there. I completely agree about opening it up to non-students... Granted, probably 80% of the residents of the area are students, but there are people living in the Heights that aren't. I think they should definitely not limit themselves to the kind of cookie-cutter retail that every shopping mall has. I think the pool hall that charges by the hour is a great idea, by the way.
October 27, 201014 yr For the record, I was being entirely sarcastic. I just wanted an excuse to use the words, ratfink, rathscallion, and skeez. There there, TheHemroid. I have no problem with a pool hall, though I probably wouldn't go.
October 27, 201014 yr A pool hall probably isn't viable due to the smoking ban. Several have closed since the ban (out in the suburbs at least) and I haven't seen any new ones open up.
October 27, 201014 yr Slightly off-topic, but all the roads around this development were scraped and resurfaced about 1-2 months ago. They stopped before putting the top layer on, and striped all the lanes. The manhole covers are poking out everywhere. Anyone know why they didn't put the top layer on? Or if they will before winter gets here? It'll be impossible to plow with the manholes poking up like that.
October 27, 201014 yr ^I've asked that same question to a construction worker and he said they have to let the first layer settle for a certain amount of time before the second layer goes on. Otherwise you get cracks and massive dips and ripples in the pavement:)
October 27, 201014 yr A pool hall probably isn't viable due to the smoking ban. Several have closed since the ban (out in the suburbs at least) and I haven't seen any new ones open up. Agreed. Many area bars have pool and they seem to handle the demand just fine. From what I've heard, there will be a much bigger push for retail in this development, rather than restaurants and entertainment....which is much needed and appreciated. I hate having to always to to Kenwood, Rookwood or Florence to get clothing or electronics. I do wonder, however, if some of the same chains at said shopping centres would be willing to open a second location in CUF. Specifically, I could see H&M, Forever21, Apple and Trader Joe's doing very well in this area.
October 27, 201014 yr I'd think that Apple wouldn't open a store this close to a campus as the bookstore already sells their products with the education discount. A second Apple Store in this area would more likely fit downtown/The Banks or somewhere over in NKY. I think a Trader Joe's would do very well in this area. October 27, 201014 yr As a student without a car who lives right off McMillan, retail is what I want to see most in this development. Between UPA and the area closer to Clifton there is plenty of variety in terms of food and entertainment. Obviously a couple new places might be nice, but it seems if you aren't the hipster type (like myself) there really isn't much in terms of retail in the area. The only thing beyond that I would really like to see is a more modern bar/club open up in the development as there really isn't a place like that in the direct vicinity of UC (walking distance that is) unless I've managed to somehow not know about one after living on that side of campus for three years. Some of the bars are okay, but they can get pretty old pretty fast. Something more along the lines of some of the newer bars downtown would be nice to have close by. It would eliminate the need for a taxi fair every time I go out and offer alternatives to Mt. Adams/The Dock/downtown/Newport.

The streetcar will be taking you downtown to the bars and clubs before Uptown commons is finished being built :)
October 28, 201014 yr ^Very true and in reality none of this really matters all that much to me specifically since I will be leaving Cincinnati after graduation for Chicago and the streetcar and Uptown Commons (or whatever random name it has now) will have only been finished (hopefully) for a short period of time. Although I'm looking into possibly buying income properties in the UC area before moving to Chicago and these developments will greatly affect that. So I guess my own personal view of what I want out of this development is probably similar to other UC students so in the end I still hope for these things. And a direct line to downtown that doesn't involve waiting for a bus will be fantastic. I swear, every time I take a bus downtown it involves me missing the bus by a mere few seconds then proceeding to wait at a bus stop that is supposed to be served by several lines that go straight to Government Square yet I end up waiting an hour before anything comes. Hopefully the streetcar is more regular than the buses are. But back to this project. I know they have since scaled down the size of this project but does anyone know if this means that the overall development will end up being smaller or if it will only be partially built and then continued at a later date?
October 28, 201014 yr This thread should be renamed to "Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop".
October 28, 201014 yr A pool hall probably isn't viable due to the smoking ban. Several have closed since the ban (out in the suburbs at least) and I haven't seen any new ones open up. Agreed. Many area bars have pool and they seem to handle the demand just fine. You clearly aren't a pool player then. Bar boxes and "by the hour" tables are totally different in size, style of play, etc. I'm not saying Uptown Commons desperately needs a real pool hall, but there's definitely a niche there that is not filled.
October 28, 201014 yr This thread should be renamed to "Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop". Nah. Let's not give that name that much legitimacy :)
October 28, 201014 yr The name reminds me of an old guy trying to sound cool. "Yo kids, u square @ the loop, dawg" comes to mind when I hear it. *cringe*
October 28, 201014 yr ^ I agree, but I actually get pleasure out of it because it's so ridiculous. The name doesn't really matter, so it might as well be something comically stupid. If they start slapping the name on lots of things (say, a streetcar stop), I might start to feel differently. For now it just makes the project slightly more interesting, in an absurd sort of way.
October 28, 201014 yr ^I agree in the sense that I feel the name will be used about as often as UPA is used. Pretty much everyone I know refers to the stores in UPA as "such-and-such on Calhoun" and only the actual apartments as UPA. I feel this will just continue that trend.
January 21, 201114 yr Calhoun development site, long stalled, back on track U Square @ The Loop has intent letters from 11 retailers Business Courier - by Dan Monk , Courier Senior Staff Reporter Date: Friday, January 21, 2011, 6:00am EST - Last Modified: Friday, January 21, 2011, 10:40am EST An 11-store retail lineup and surging interest among prospective office tenants has developers convinced that a long-stalled project near the University of Cincinnati will be ready for groundbreaking by June. http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/print-edition/2011/01/21/calhoun-development-site-long.html
January 21, 201114 yr When are we gonna change the thread title? Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ The Loop
January 21, 201114 yr If they signed 11 tenants, why not announce them to build excitement for the project?
January 21, 201114 yr When are we gonna change the thread title? Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ The Loop I'd wait on this till they break ground or launch a website with the same name. “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
January 21, 201114 yr Nooooooo! Facebook doesn't count! :-P Edit: I further investigated this and...it really seems to be official. Do they not have enough money to start a real website? I guess that means I'm changing the name. “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche
January 21, 201114 yr Did anybody figure out what "loop" they're referring to yet? Theres a giant circle in the design. Maybe that?
January 22, 201114 yr They really should have just stopped at "University Square." And I know all too well that changing the name of a Facebook page is one of the most difficult things to accomplish on earth. In other words, that name is for good.
January 22, 201114 yr Biz Journal article from Friday (paid version) says Smash Burger, Qdoba, Noodles, and Lids have signed letter of intent.
January 23, 201114 yr "U Square" is the quadrilateral plot they are developing, at (@) which they expect U will live, work, eat, and/or shop. Someone should revive Vertigo, and put it on US@TL.
February 23, 201114 yr Great news on this project: Clifton Heights development taking shape Written by Laura Baverman Five-story buildings of restaurants, shops, offices and apartments will rise this summer from two vacant blocks of land just steps from the University of Cincinnati campus. Besides The Banks on Cincinnati’s riverfront, the $68 million project would be the first major retail, residential and office complex to come out of the ground locally since before the recession. Called University Square at the Loop, the complex is set to open by fall 2012. Developers Towne Properties and Al. Neyer Inc. say they’ve got eight tenants with verbal commitments to open restaurants, bars or retail stores on the property snuggled between Calhoun and McMillan streets in Clifton Heights. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20110223/BIZ01/302230047/Clifton-Heights-taking-shape?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE
February 24, 201114 yr I find it funny that they included so many photos of the existing site. Like we haven't had to see that eyesore devolve for the past 10 years.
