Typically Target has a pretty limited selection of food, but it should be a welcome addition to students at UC and the surrounding community (especially CUF). This won't by any means be a full service grocery, but it's awesome to see this happening.

 

That's perfect for the area, though. Many UC students eat at the dining hall or restaurants much of the time and only need the basics at home. The same's true for urban residents in general. We don't need 10 brands of pickles and 50 varieties of pasta like you'd find in a suburban Kroger. The best scenario would be having an urban Target or Kroger for the basics and Findlay Market for specialty items.

Is it just going to be on the first floor, or will it be two levels, do you guys think? While it will be a great thing for residents of the area to have a Target, I think another benefit of landing Target is the symbol it sends to other national retailers.  If Clifton Heights is seen as being good enough for Target, I think a lot of other restaurants and retailers will be more confident in locating there.  If you think of U Square as a mall, I think Target is the first 'anchor tenant' they've landed, which should help draw other retail around it.  Who knows, maybe we'll even see another pipe dream proposal floated for the site to the east of U Square. That big vacant lot looks terrible right now, and it's really the last big puzzle piece missing in Uptown.

I used to shop at Target for groceries but their fresh selections were a little lacking - with a lot of food spoilage and items out of date. Here is a great article about why they are struggling in this regard, but I suspect that the urban Target will have less fresh food and more packaged items.

The defunct High Class Boutique on the corner of Fairview and Ravine, which advertised "High-Waisted Jeans, Bodysuits, and Rompers", was recently replaced by University Mattresses, complete with a creepy mannequin laying down on a mattress in the front window. It's total madness, often ending with multiple police cars shutting the whole thing down around midnight.  I have no idea why the Shell seems to be the hangout spot, but it definitely is.

I'm at that Stop & Go a few times a month to buy a six pack, and I have seen cops walk in and go through the doors to back of house several times. I assume they have an office of some sort back there but I don't think it is always staffed, or even staffed very often at all.

No I don't think they do.  It's just that the gas station has a bit of a parking lot which none of the others in the area do.  Also, when it rains, they all gather and take shelter in the U Square garage right next door. 

 

I was filling up my tires at their pump a few weeks ago and some woman with a bag of BW3's food was throwing a fit because they towed her car.  People always want to park in their surface lot even though there is free 30-minute parking in the garage that literally abuts the Shell station.  Also, everyone knows that carry-out at BW3's is slow.

There used to be tons of loitering before cell phones in shopping center parking lots and so on because people would pick a place to meet before going wherever they were going.  One time I met 100+ carloads of people at an abandoned Wal-Mart before heading out into the country to a party on a farm (no phones, no GPS, etc.).  But now this Shell gas station, mysteriously, seems to be the destination.

I'm pretty sure Target will just be the first floor. The first floor has 25,000 sq ft of finished area (per the auditor's site), so if Target uses just 17,700 sq ft, there will still be leftover room for the common areas (which are used to access the upper floors) and perhaps a couple of the existing retailers which might remain.

The upper floors have heights of just 12' while the first floor is 16'. So, the building is set up for retail on the first floor, and offices on the second and third floors.

No doubt this was yet another Stop N Go, Schell Station-related incident.

Around midnight Friday, shots were fired near University of Cincinnati’s campus.

 

Police say shots were fired on Moerlein at 11:45 p.m. No injuries were reported.

 

Two vehicles were involved in the shooting, one black and the other one gray. Both were last seen heading towards Ohio Avenue.

 

No suspects were detained.

Construction of the Target is now underway in the space formerly occupied by Alter'd State, Body Central, and Smoothie King.  Alter'd State and Body Central each appear to be dead but Smoothie King has moved around the corner within the same building to Calhoun St. next to Great Clips. 

 

 

I wonder if Smoothie King got a deal to move out of the way of the space Target needed. That's the only logical way in my mind that they could move after doing what appeared to be abysmal business.

 

Their spot was bad. That single storefront was behind the railing which just obscured its spot. It doesn't seem like that would do a ton but it was just enough to make it unnoticeable. I'd imagine it'll do quite a bit better along Calhoun instead of in a weird spot on a pass through street.

I just read that the urban Target being built near OSU will have a CVS Pharmacy inside. Does anyone know whether the U Square one will too? If so, it probably doesn't make sense for CVS to continue to operate their standalone pharmacy at McMicken & Vine in addition to one a few blocks down the street inside Target...

They probably will do both. Whereas CVS makes money off of the retail stores in their own locations they only get to make money off of the actual pharmacy part in the Target. Some pharmacists told me that Target-operated pharmacies were the best to work at while CVSs are the worst. Apparently there's no money in operating a pharmacy where the staff is really happy.

A national retailer' first small-format store in Cincinnati has set a date to open near the University of Cincinnati.

 

Target's 17,500-squre-foot urban store at 235 Calhoun St. at U Square @ the Loop will hold a grand opening on July 23. The store will contain assortments for students and campus residents, including everyday essentials, home products for dorm and apartment living, select men's and women's apparel and accessories, a selection of groceries, tech products and accessories.
