July 13, 201212 yr Anybody know what these poles are? At first I was excited thinking they might be for catenary wires but they are on 14th as well. They are pretty tall and sturdy looking poles but maybe they are just for banners? Pretty sure those are part of streetscape improvements. I know that area of Elm, Race, 14th, Pleasant is getting new street signs/poles and stuff like Vine got awhile ago.
July 13, 201212 yr Saw those as well. They look similar to the poles installed around the courthouse, that later saw security cameras attached to them. It would not surprise me if it was outfitted with a 360-camera. I'm not sure we are at the point in construction to be installing poles for the streetcar - unless they are going ahead and installing them as part of the Washington Park development.
July 13, 201212 yr I think they are just street lights that aren't complete yet. The security cameras are already up all over the park (there's basically nowhere you can't be watched by the eye in the sky). While the park had a grand opening, it's actually not complete yet. There are a lot of little things left to do, namely the roof/trellis at the stage and other buildings.
July 13, 201212 yr The new double head streetlamps are up and running on the side of the street (park side) to where the poles are and these are much taller, so I don't think they are lighting. The positioning on 14th is away from Race and Elm, about abeam the garage head houses. I did hear from someone at CDOTE that the city was working to get the footings for catenary wires in with the park construction but don't know for sure where it landed. Maybe they are catenary wire and camera poles :-)

July 13, 201212 yr City Flea is at Washington park tomorrow, if anyone needs another reason to get down to the park to check it out http://www.thecityflea.com/
July 13, 201212 yr There are a total of eight of these poles. Two on each street that borders Washington Park. Elm currently only has one installed, but the base for the second one is in place. It does look as if they are meant to hold banners like the ones already found on poles in the park. As for the top though? Yeah, they have yet to plant the trees on 14th yet as you can see in the pic. Has anyone else noticed the texture of the sidewalk along the 14th side of the park. Kinda rough - maybe I'm missing something. July 14, 201212 yr There's some permeable concrete along 12th that looks very gray and borderline unfinished. That's probably what you're seeing along 14th too. They used it around Oakley Square in a few areas as well.

July 15, 201212 yr City Flea is at Washington park tomorrow, if anyone needs another reason to get down to the park to check it out http://www.thecityflea.com/ I used it as a reason to take my husband to the park. City Flea was great in the space! And there was still plenty of room for others to use the park for play or relaxing. I really like how the shaded portions of the park still feel very chilled out even when there's lots going on in front of Music Hall.
July 20, 201212 yr Article about Over the Rhine's performance at Washington Park this Sunday. About 7,500 expected to fit in the Civic Lawn.
July 23, 201212 yr so Over the Rhine performed at Washington Park last night ... http://www.blogotr.com/otr/over-the-rhine-concert-at-washington-park/
July 23, 201212 yr Thanks for the photo, OTR--just another delightful visual testament to the new dynamics of this venerable, once neglected park.

August 7, 201212 yr Bad News.. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20120806/NEWS/308060095/Music-Hall-renovation-delay-likely
August 7, 201212 yr I'd rather see this deal done right -- even if it means a delay -- than the city making a long-term decision about one of its most prized landmarks that it may eventually regret.
August 7, 201212 yr That rendering should instead depict the loiterers all looking at their phones, posting photos letting everyone they went to high school know they're at the symphony.

August 13, 201212 yr That rendering should instead depict the loiterers all looking at their phones, posting photos letting everyone they went to high school know they're at the symphony. Idiotic. Oh, I forgot, you are the guy who made such a stink about the recent Bunbury fest cause you don't like "hipsters" or whomever. And you said there haven't been any good bands since 2000. I guess the world needs old, bitter curmudgeons to remind us all how little we know about the good old days, you know, before the wheel was invented.
August 13, 201212 yr Moderator Note Jake is allowed to make snarky comments about UrbanOhio topics as long as he doesn't directly insult other UrbanOhio members. You're not allowed to direct personal insults at Jake if you disagree with what he says. So knock it off.
August 13, 201212 yr That rendering should instead depict the loiterers all looking at their phones, posting photos letting everyone they went to high school know they're at the symphony. Yeah, people being excited about music are just the worst. :-P Anyway, to be more accurate, those "loiterers" would actually be posting an update about how they just watched Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. But seriously, with the Washington Park revamp being so successful, i imagine that there will be even more demand for holding events at a renovated Music Hall, especially in the spaces that overlook the park. Success builds on itself!
August 22, 201212 yr This josh spring guy on 700wlw is out of his mind saying the old Washington park is better, safer, with less drunks, and problems. He said these new "tourists" coming to washington park are walking around making noise, disrupting the peace and quiet and peeing on buildings/streets. The homeless coalition now wants to ban drinking in Washington park Even the 700wlw host was like "wtf are you talking about?"

And I find the use of "tourist" here to be curious, to say the least. Many Cincinnati parks have more visitors than just their immediate neighbors. That's healthy. I'm wondering if this is the final straw and will complete his slide into irrelevancy. I'm not even sure what his particular organization does at this point - the "news" section of its website was last updated in 2008. Are they the StreetVibes folks?
August 22, 201212 yr Yes, I recognized at least one StreetVibes salesman that was part of Josh Spring's ridiculous "Washington Park is The People's Park!" protest.
August 22, 201212 yr The Homeless Coalition operates StreetVibes. Majority of what they do right now (at least what is evident based on their activity) is to protest things like Washington Park and to show up at community meetings/council hearings and cause a ruckus. They are more of a political group than a group that actually supplies services to the homeless like job training/placement.

The problem is, most WLW listeners don't know what the park was like before (or after) the renovation. They will buy every word they hear about Washington Park, OTR, and downtown being dangerous and full of hobos, however false those claims are. Meanwhile, everyone that had actually visited the park, or knows what it was like previously, understands that the protest was nonsense. People Josh Spring, Jason Haap, etc., are being absurd in their attempts to make 3CDC look like the bad guy when it comes to Washington Park, Fountain Square, or the Gateway Quarter.
August 23, 201212 yr Prep work has begun at Washington Park for the Cincinnati Open: http://www.blogotr.com/otr/avp-cincinnati-open-prep-begins-at-washington-park/
September 4, 201212 yr It's quite a stretch to say that a park rule prohibiting rummaging through trash cans is unconstitutional, but that's the stretch the Homeless Coalition and their lawyer Ms. Kinsley will attempt to make in court: Lawsuit says Washington Park rules target poor, homeless New rules in the renovated Washington Park are unfair and unconstitutional because they are meant to keep away poor and homeless people, a federal lawsuit claimed Tuesday.
September 5, 201212 yr They are alienating themselves. American/Cincinnatian liberals are now pro-business/development and they can't handle it, so they are throwing a hissy fit. Which just pushes their former allies further to the right/center. The lawsuit will go nowhere, and even if it did, people would support the new rules in great numbers, were they submitted to community scrutiny.
September 5, 201212 yr First, the "poor" and "homeless" are not considered to be protected classes under the 14th Amendment. So a law probably cannot be unconstitutional because it discriminates against the poor or the homeless. It would have to be shown to discriminate against a particular race, religion etc. Second, the Washington Park rules don't target the poor and the homeless. They target vagrants. There is a big difference. Poor people don't typically rummage through trash. Vagrants do.
September 5, 201212 yr Both of the issues brought up could also be spun as a health/safety concern too. Imagine people just leaving bags of clothing or food in the park for homeless people. That could be construed as a "suspicious package" and it could shut down the park for hours as a bomb squad comes out (it happened at a White Castle the other day with a briefcase). also, it could be said that rummaging trash could be considered dangerous for the health of individuals doing the work as well as the people trying to patronize the park. Who knows what people have been throwing away? It could be anything from simple newspapers to spoiled milk to used needles. This could cause sickness or be dangerous to people enjoying the park. The whole lawsuit is baseless and is a simple cry for attention from a group that has lost [almost] all credibility.
September 7, 201212 yr The fact that the "homeless advocates" keep making a big deal over Washington Park shows that they understand it's a big deal. They know it's a turning point in the neighborhood and that it's changing a lot of people's perceptions. These so-called "homeless advocates" have no real interest in making life better for the homeless (i.e., getting them cleaned up and off the street); they simply want Washington Park and OTR to remain the HQ for the homeless population.
September 7, 201212 yr People should check out an issue of Street Vibes sometime. The writers pretty much just write about each other. For example, this week the cover story is on 98 Degrees and written by Jason Haap.
September 7, 201212 yr I feel almost sorry for the homeless that get duped by the "Homeless Coalition" to sell Street Vibes instead of working with agencies to actually improve their lot in life. My two year old son and I got harassed, followed around and then treated to a profanity laced tirade when I declined to buy a paper last month. Apparently, I wasn't "keeping it real"? "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago." - Warren Buffett
September 7, 201212 yr When I lived in Boston the same guy tried to sell me Street Vibes every day at the subway entrance. Then if I walked past him at lunch he'd try again so I started walking around the block. I can't be the only one who goes out of his way to avoid the "regulars".
September 8, 201212 yr I used to buy Street Vibes but not anymore. If I did I would feel like I'm enabling the extremists in the Homeless Coalition. It's a shame really, that this, like everything else in 2012 America, has become political. Washington Park is the tipping point in SoLi (South of Liberty). It's obviously an overwhelming success, and I think that scares the pants off of the people who fear change.
September 8, 201212 yr Yeah, I just recently came to this conclusion as well. I think I'll start donating on a monthly basis to Tender Mercies or OTRCH, since those organizations are actually doing things to move people out of chronic homelessness.
September 8, 201212 yr Washington Park is the tipping point in SoLi (South of Liberty). No no no, stop that sh*t. This isn't NYC where people just make up neighborhood names on a whim. It is Over-the-Rhine!

September 8, 201212 yr Obviously, it's still Over-the-Rhine. However, it is useful to clarify the difference between South of Liberty and North of Liberty, which there is a difference. If you don't like it, too bad. Maybe I'll start using it more if people make a fuss over it.
