Posted March 21, 200718 yr Per another discussion I stated that I thought the majority of urbanohio was white males between the ages of 25 to 35. So I ask, what is the racial make up of UrbanOhio? What is indicated on your state issued ID?

March 21, 200718 yr "I am 50% Korean, 25% German and 25% Irish. Yet I can't hold liquor worth shit." Poor thing - I'm half-Irish, half-German, so I can't relate. "Well, Sir....maybe you can be so kind and make this a sticky and come up with a special pic just for this thread? smoooches...." Maybe, but you didn't answer my question. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

March 21, 200718 yr "Caucasian (largely of Swiss decent)" Glad you parents were not Swiss porn stars. German Scottish here but American dating back to the 1600s, too.
March 21, 200718 yr 100% Pure American mutt. I know I'm gonna make some enemies when I say this, but outside of hardcore geneological research, all this "half-this" "25%-that" is pure boo-shit. The Kingfish allows three exceptions: 1) You possess physical traits and/or a surname that clearly sets you apart from the majority population. 2) In your daily life, you are actively endeavoring to preserve the language and culture of your ethnic components, or 3) You are either an immigrant or first generation with naturalized parents. Now let's light this candle.
March 21, 200718 yr "Per another discussion I stated that I thought the majority of urbanohio was white males between the ages of 25 to 35." And if your hypothesis is correct, then what? Just trying to get to know the my fellow UOians.... Maybe this information can be used in conjunction with the ideas that come out of the "whats next for urbanohio thread". We already have a polls on Sexual Orientation Age Ethnicity - Race Sex Where do you live
March 21, 200718 yr Nearly 100% Irish. My family came to Akron and south Jersey via New York City shortly after the Great Depression. I like corned beef on occasion but despise cabbage and dark beers.
March 21, 200718 yr Primarily German...but also have a Prussian background. As in the Baltic Prussians, the tribe that lived east of the Vistula? Your family must have done some heavy-duty geneology to trace this out.
March 22, 200718 yr I'm only human Of flesh and blood I'm made Human Born to make mistakes I am just a man
March 22, 200718 yr Primarily German...but also have a Prussian background. As in the Baltic Prussians, the tribe that lived east of the Vistula? Your family must have done some heavy-duty geneology to trace this out. Well this is a sketchy part of our family history, but the only reason we know is because a distant relative of ours was at one time a very prominent member of the Prussian society (some type of royalty). We do not have any hardcore evidence to support this yet...just word of mouth, but I usually claim that as part of my background because I feel it is a cool history. I also have some Swiss in me (for KOOW its about 12.5% Swiss)
March 22, 200718 yr Primarily German...but also have a Prussian background. I'm Bavarian... the long-time rival German state to Prussia...
March 22, 200718 yr Celtic (Cornish and Welsh) Germanic (Prussian and Saxon) Slavic (Polish) 100 % Euromutt
March 22, 200718 yr BOY: Grandpa? GRANDPA: Yes kingfish? BOY: What does "prejudiced" mean? GRANDPA: Prejudiced? Where did you hear that? BOY: From the pope. He's my Mingo friend. GRANDPA: Well, kingfish, you are prejudiced...
March 22, 200718 yr 50% French-Lebanese (25% Phoenician/Arab blood) 25% Irish 25% mix of Czechoslovakian, Austrian, German thas an interesting mix. So what is on your drivers license? white?
March 22, 200718 yr License = White Reality = Mostly Italian (Sicilian) + Cherokee Indian, African (Great-grandmother was a slave from the western Africa), and Caribbean (Grandfather parents composed of slave mother and island father) + small amount of Irish In other words.... Mutt
March 22, 200718 yr "1) You possess physical traits and/or a surname that clearly sets you apart from the majority population." Hotheadedness (German) and a fiery temper (Irish). Check. "2) In your daily life, you are actively endeavoring to preserve the language and culture of your ethnic components," Beer (German and Irish) and potatoes (Irish - remember I'm making up for the Famine). Check. "3) You are either an immigrant or first generation with naturalized parents." Grandparents came over via the boat, so my parents are first generation. Close enough! ;-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 22, 200718 yr So I ask, what is your race Human. Possibly Vulcan, the tests aren't back from the lab yet What is indicated on your state issued ID? I'll be glad to tell you... Its ************ And there you have it.
March 22, 200718 yr 1/2 Swiss 1/4 German 1/4 Scots-Irish My Dad's Swiss ancestors (maternal side) came to America in 1738 I don't know when his dad's family came over from Ireland, but I have a lead on some geneaological info that was written by his grandfather in the late 1800's. I hope to check it out soon. Mom's Swiss ancestors (paternal side) came over about 1867. Her mom's German family came over in the late 1800s; my grandmother was the youngest of six kids, and the only one born in America. She was the only one who spoke fluent English, too.

March 22, 200718 yr german - 50% irish - 25% french/belgian combination -- total - 25% (apparently there is a lot of in breading and the exact percentage make up of each is not able to be determined) queer - 90% (the other 10% likes football) but of course this information is really part of another forum question
March 22, 200718 yr English/Irish/Scottish/German/(Anatolian) Greek with probably some Turkish and Armenian mixed in- I'm not sure
March 22, 200718 yr Well this is a sketchy part of our family history, but the only reason we know is because a distant relative of ours was at one time a very prominent member of the Prussian society (some type of royalty). We do not have any hardcore evidence to support this yet...just word of mouth, but I usually claim that as part of my background because I feel it is a cool history. Actually it is a very cool history. From what you said it sounds like your ancestor may have been a junker, roughly translated to mean "country squire". The junkers where the Prussian landed aristocracy. As you can see from this map, Prussia expanded greatly in the 19th Century: While there was landed gentry throughout the territories aquired during the 19th century, the true junkers where from the blue area in the map, specfically in the area where the "Prussia" label is at. "Old Prussia", where the balitc prussian tribe once lived, was the area furthest to the east, by those two lagoons off the Baltic coast. The junkers where the dominant social class in Prussia, providing the officer corps for the Prussian Army. Oddly enough the ruling house of Prussia, the Hohenzollerns, where themselves not junkers, but came from southern Germany. The ancestral castle and lands were aquired by Prussian Hohenzollerns after the southern branch of the famliy died out, in 1849 (you can see this territory on the map above). The junkers where all killed or dispossed after WWII, as their lands where in the Communist East. As for Prussia itself, there is apparently a pretty good new history out on it.... Iron Kingdom, The Rise and Downfall of Prussia 1600-1947...if you enjoy history it might be worth your time.
March 23, 200718 yr Ughh not the percentage breakdowns of western european ancestry followed by Irish and German stereotypes. Seriously, almost everyone in America is a mutt. There's no 50 percent this, 25 percent that. I just think it's pointless to talk about your ancestry unless its something out of the norm.
March 23, 200718 yr ^Thank you! Unless you're really, really homesick for Prussia. In which case, better book your flight now; the rates go up in April.
March 23, 200718 yr Ughh not the percentage breakdowns of western european ancestry followed by Irish and German stereotypes. Seriously, almost everyone in America is a mutt. There's no 50 percent this, 25 percent that. I just think it's pointless to talk about your ancestry unless its something out of the norm I think you generalize about perecentages. For people with recent immigrant ancestry or rural areas with very little in-migration, or immigrant groups with little intermarriage, it would be valid to speak of 100%, 50/50 or 50/25/25 @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Yet the question in the thread header was really about "race" not ancestry. Everyone who posted here listing some mix of European ancestery is of one race, "White". Kingfishes' list brings up the the point of culture. Ancestry does not necessarily equate to culture or folkways. People of European ancestry evenutally assimilate into the dominant American culture and folkways, which derive from Engish and Scots sources. The best book on this British contribution is Albions' Seed, Four British Folkways in America, by David Hackett Fisher. (and there are some small exceptions to this) For a relevant (to Ohio) treatment of one of these British folkways ("Borderlands") as it translates into American culture this early site hosted by the UVA American Studies program is worth reading: Albion's Seed Grows in the Cumberland Gap ...and, if you all are interested, a review of Albion's Seed
March 23, 200718 yr "Ughh not the percentage breakdowns of western european ancestry followed by Irish and German stereotypes." Gee, I bet you're a hoot to drink with  "Seriously, almost everyone in America is a mutt. There's no 50 percent this, 25 percent that. I just think it's pointless to talk about your ancestry unless its something out of the norm." So don't. :-D clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
March 23, 200718 yr ^^The phenomenom of assimilation is inevitable and sad. Worse yet, from what my wife (who immigrated from Poland seven years ago) and I have found (for Poles at least) there are scant few resources for immigrants who actually do want to preserve their culture in a formalized academic setting. I understand we're fighting the tide on this one, but we've been very successful so far at raising our children bilingual. On to the issue of ancestry, my experience above has sensitized me to the tendency for Americans to loudly and proudly profess their heritage in terms such as "I'm Polish!" or "I'm a Frenchman!" No, if you were born on U.S. soil, you're American of French extraction or American of Polish extraction. You belong here. This is your home. Most people who trumpet their German heritage would be completely lost in modern Germany (save for the fact that many Germans speak perfect english) and would be homesick in minutes. Though, I by no means mean to diminish people who have chosen to study their ancestry and learn the language and culture. I, as a fourth generation-plus descendent of perfectly common immigrant stock, have zero-attachment to any other culture than that of the United States (save for my wife's Polish culture). In this sense, I am a proud American, because everything that is me is a product, direct or otherwise, of my--and my ancestors'--experience on this soil. Everything else is a distant and meaningless footnote. I am truly a stranger in a strange land and I feel right at home. And I'm a fucking riot to drink with.
March 23, 200718 yr The suprising thing about Southwest Ohio, the Cincinnati/Dayton area, is the continuing prescence of the old European ethnic groups in the community. It has been generations since they "came over", yet the descendents of the original immigrants still maintain ties to and membership in various organizations and institutions (such as social clubs and churches) and still sponsor community festivals of various sorts. I guess we are forunate in this area that that there has not been a rejection of mimization of ancestry or we wouldn't have Amber Rose here in Dayton nor the Greek Festival or the Italian Festival or German Day in Carillon Park, or the celtic fest put on by the United Irish. I know Cincinnati still has a fairly large group of German associations, which are a remarkable survival from the past, given that German immigration mostly ended in the 19th Century. These events and organizations would cease to exist if people, at least some people, where not interested in their heritage.
March 23, 200718 yr ^And of course, another surprisingly resillient immigrant enclave is Hamtramck, MI. Still a lot of Polish and Ukrainians there who never got around to learning english. (Please put your photos back up: I'll be nice).
March 23, 200718 yr Hah, no, I wasn't talking about neighborhoods down here. The neighborhoods are long long gone and the residents long moved to suburbia and are thoroughly assimilated, yet still maintain these various groups and such and throw these festivals, sort it's sort of kabuki ethinicity, very stylized...or, another way to look at it, maybe its just a social thing by now, like the VFW or Legion Hall or the Grange, but as the Czech Club or the German singing society or whatever... I just find it interesting that people still bother, (and am happy that they do, as I like a good Irish band and beer on a hot summer day, during that celtic fest)
