Finally, in light of my comments about culture and folkways being more important than ancestry...I am part Chicagoan and part Kentuckian, and don't even get me to give a percentage!

Caucasian (White, South African, NON - latino)

I hope you are aware that not all South African's are Caucasians.

:-D

If you're 100% European blood, I can see where that sentiment comes from (due to heavy mixing and very little cultural retention within America), but if you have parents from Asia and Europe or Africa and Europe, it's a very different story.

Hence exceptions 1 and 3:

1) You possess physical traits and/or a surname that clearly sets you apart from the majority population.

...

3) You are either an immigrant or first generation with naturalized parents.

Hah, no, I wasn't talking about neighborhoods down here.

The neighborhoods are long long gone and the residents long moved to suburbia and are thoroughly assimilated, yet still maintain these various groups and such and throw these festivals, sort it's sort of kabuki ethinicity, very stylized...or, another way to look at it, maybe its just a social thing by now, like the VFW or Legion Hall or the Grange, but as the Czech Club or the German singing society or whatever...

I just find it interesting that people still bother, (and am happy that they do, as I like a good Irish band and beer on a hot summer day, during that celtic fest)

One word: politics. In the Pol-Am community, for example, The PNA (Polish National Alliance) and PAC (Polish Amercian Congress) still wield a heavy club. I realized this the evening I almost ran over Sen. Carl Levin as he scurried into the local PNA Hall to a roast of a PAC big wig. True story.

My family traces way back to Italy, and later to Germany and Wales. The Welsh side of my family didn't stay in Wales for more than 100 years when they left for Ireland to aid in the overthrow of a national leader (I think I still have that trait) and became landowners in Kilkenny.

We've been in America for 350 years, so I consider myself an American more than anything else.

Here's some fun family history... The Prendergasts settled in the Hudson River valley. In the mid 1700s, my great great great grandfather William Prendergast led a farmers revolt against a lord and a British governor in New York City sentenced William to death. His wife pleaded for mercy and saved him. They had to leave the colony, moving to Kentucky. After the Revolutionary War, they returned to New York state, settling on farms along Lake Erie. Their son James Prendergast chose a spot instead at the east end of Chautauqua Lake and founded Jamestown, NY. My father and grandfather are named after him, James Prendergast.

GREAT GREAT STORY!!!  LOVE IT!!

I am so bored with my anglosaxoness. Swiss, German, English. yawn

edit: ok I can tell a story too. My great grandfather Philip Hurst was a Mormon polygamist. He was driven across the country and then out of Utah by federal marshalls to Mexico where he lived in a compound and fathered 26 children (my grandmother was the youngest)

This has morphed into a folkways thread, and of that I am most happy.

Straight up Black, damnit!

How white am I?

PF_340393_OEM_15MB~Pat-Boone-Posters.jpg

Pat Boone-strength white.

1/2 Polish, 1/4 German, 1/4 Irish.

^My dad is the same way-adamant American and nothing else.

As a side note, my 100% Polish father as a younger man, along with his two brothers and with the blessing of my grandmother, decided to Americanize and change their last name to Mitchell from Mscichowski. Only obstacle was my fiercely proud grandfather, who forbade his three sons from dropping the name. Oddly, some years later after gaining some distance from my grandfather and separate from my two uncles, my father changes his name to Mallory (I don't know whatever happened to "Mitchell"). So when asked, I tell people about what I call my father's "maiden name".

bump for the newbies

My dad was born in London...so definitely British and some German on his side..my mom's side uhh...mostly polish and austrian so yeah...im sort of a euro mutt...Kind of a mix of eastern european jew with White Anglo-Saxon Protestant...haha

My father was the son of Swiss immigrants, one of whom was 1/2 Czech.  My mother was the daughter of a German immigrant Father, and an American mother, who was 1/2 Alsatian and 1/2 German.  Her family did not speak any English at home, and my mom didn't learn English until high school.  My immediate family is totally Americanized, but retain many German traditions, which have become pretty watered down with each passing generation.  Only one of my nieces and one nephew are interested in the old traditions, which includes speaking German.  The others could care less, and I see their point.  It is too far removed from their daily lives to be of relevance.  I just consider myself American, but have a very very German last name.

I'm a WASP:

White Anglo Saxon Polack.

Black.

But in my history, we have Caucasian and American Indian (Mom says from somewhere in Upstate NY)

Nigerian, Egyptian, and Ethiopian.

Meaning, black.

Might as well be a whitey though.

Thank you, Jim Crow.

The best part about being White is our unique ability to get a farmer's tan. If  you have one, post it up!

farmeruz2.jpg

How do we as white people get rid of these? Apply sunblock to the darker areas then tan to even it out? Maybe that is common white knowledge but I dunno.

Rock Lobster!
