July 9, 200816 yr I am Sicilian, and pretty dark. Definately darker than alot of Puerto Ricans, however not as dark as some Indians (especially the ones from southern India. Interesting as most PR are dark skinned. Not the ones you see on TV, like JLo or Ricky Martin, they are more the exception. yeah, why are so many of those telenovela actors blonde? Well most are "white" Latinos. You rarely see brown or black Latin's on novela's unless they are playing a subservient role. It's a huge topic of discussion in the latin media community. Most of those shows are produced in Mexico City or Caracas, where "blonde" equals better. Its why a lot of south american latinos come to the states and are brain washed to think they are "white" since they are of fairer skin color....then reality sets in. I've seen it countless times.

I also noticed that some of those actors have German names. It's Argentina (I think) that has/had a large ethnic German population. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

July 9, 200816 yr Reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit, April 9th, 1977 Black Perspective .....Garrett Morris .....Julian Bond Garrett Morris: Good evening, and welcome to "Black Perspective". I'm your host, Garrett Morris. Tonight our guest is Mr. Julian Bond, and we'll be talking about the myths surrounding black I.Q. Specifically, the myth that whites are inherently more intelligent than blacks. Julian Bond: Good evening, Garrett. Garrett Morris: Now, Julian, perhaps you could explain something to me. In all these studies comparing black I.Q. to white I.Q., what kind of test is used to measure I.Q.'s in the first place? Julian Bond: Well, this is the major problem with these studies. The measurements of I.Q. which form the basis of comparison come from tests composed by whites for whites. The tests are culturally biased; it's not surprising that whites would score better than blacks. Garrett Morris: Could you give us an example of what you're talking about? Julian Bond: Certainly. Here are some questions that have appeared on recent I.Q. tests. Number one: "You have been invited over for cocktails by the officer of your trust fund. Cocktails begin at 4:30, but you must make an appearance at a 6:00 formal dinner at the Yacht Club. What do you do about dress? A. Wear your blue-striped seersucker suit to cocktails and change into your tuxedo in the bathroom, apologizing to your host for the inconvenience. B. Wear your tuxedo to cocktails, apologizing to your host for wearing a dinner jacket before 6:00 PM. C. Walk to the subway at Columbus Circle and take the "A" Train uptown." Garrett Morris: Uh.. I guess I'd choose the last one. Julian Bond: I'm sorry, that's incorrect. Garrett Morris: Damn. Julian Bond: Here's another: "When waxing your skis for a cross-country run, you should..." Garrett Morris: [ interrupting ] Well, I think I understand the problem with the tests. But the fact is that people have been saying that white people are smarter than black for hundreds of years. We've only had I.Q. tests for 20 or 30 years. How did the idea of white intellectual superiority originate? Julian Bond: That's an interesting point. My theory is that it's based on the fact that light-skinned blacks are smarter than dark-skinned blacks. Garrett Morris: [ not sure he heard that right ] Say what? Julian Bond: I said I think it might have grown out of the observation that light-skinned blacks are smarter than dark-skinned blacks. Garrett Morris: I don't get it. Julian Bond: It's got nothing to do with having white blood. It's just that descendants of the lighter-skinned African tribes are more intelligent than the descendants of the darker-skinned tribes. Everybody knows that. Garrett Morris: This is the first time I've heard of it. Julian Bond: Seriously? It was proven a long time ago. Garrett Morris: Well, I still don't quite understand. We're out of time right now, but perhaps you could come back on the show again and explain it further. Julian Bond: There's very little to explain - it's just like I told you. Garrett Morris: Well, we are out of time. Good night. [ to Julian ] If you could repeat it just once more..
July 21, 200816 yr Black in Northeast Ohio: How African-Americans are faring Posted by JKroll July 20, 2008 02:41AM The number of affluent black families has surged in Northeast Ohio over the last 35 years. But as a black upper class blossomed in the Cleveland suburbs, the black middle class eroded, in sharp contrast to the national trend. Meanwhile, poverty continues to ensnare a sizable chunk of the region's black community. The result is a community of greater extremes, one characterized by a thriving professional class, a struggling middle class and a large and increasingly isolated underclass. December 9, 200816 yr I voted Latino, but I probably should have voted mixed; my bad. My mother's side of the family is Hispanic (originally from Mexico) and my father's side of the family is Caucasian. I don't think that I look very Hispanic; I have light skin and dark hair. To break it down further, my great-grand parents are from Mexico and my grandpa was born here in the U.S. (or should I say E.E.U.U., lol). Grandpa married a white woman, had my mom, and then my mom had me with a white man. So, white I guess? I don't know, it is just another label.

January 28, 200916 yr **When Are WE Going to Get Over It? For much of the last forty years, ever since America "fixed" its race problem in the Civ il Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, "When are African Americans finally going to get over it? To see more, click link http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-176650
January 28, 200916 yr Some truth, but a little over the top. If the white candidate in this years election received 95% of the white vote - as the black candidate did from the black population - I might validate that opinion. We white people have controlled political life in the disunited colonies and United States for some 400 years on this continent. Well, when you constitute 74% of the voting population (which was this year's figure that had the highest minority turnout ever) that should be expected.

Braun & Company is packing up its $3,500 hand-embroidered tablecloths and $2,390 bedding sets and will defect in April for cheaper space on Park Avenue. And it is not alone. New York’s most elegant shopping corridor, the Gold Coast of Madison Avenue, from 57th Street to 72nd Street, is pockmarked with vacancies as retailers flee sky-high rents. More than two dozen retail spaces are on the market and are either empty now or about to be. March 1, 200916 yr The definition of Latino is those countries which speak a Latino language. Italy, Spain, France, Romania. Those are White countries. I don't think so. Latino is a marketing term for people from Latin America, more specifically, mestizos. Actually hes partially right, "latino" is associated with language and nationality. However, because there are so many "latin" cultures, "latino" is associated with south american, Caribbean and central american countries, because we're Spanish speakers. Granted each country and in many cases regions within those countries speak a different dialect. Portuguese and Spanish nationals will never say or admit to being latin, and would sooner associate with being European. Whenever I go to Madrid and they ask "where are you from" I know where its going. They can always identify us PR's because we dont speak with a "thhh"; and most of the central and norther s. American countries drop the "d" on some spanish words and have more plurals; we don't use vos; a word like "coqi" which over here mean to take but in Spain means to f*ck; swearing in Spain make no sense to me. Also PRs tend to speak much faster then most other Latinos (I am so guilty of that) and most Cent. American's speak slower and sort of "sing" when they speak. Then there are a lot of African influences in some latin cultures especially Cuba, DR & Brazil. Brazilians speak Portuguese but have the largest african population outside of Africa. Ay.

Thats the literal definition. Now, common usage is different from the literal translation.

July 23, 200915 yr I'm still not sure how I feel about that story seeing as there are conflicting accounts....
July 23, 200915 yr The Gates case seems somewhat questionable as far as how big a part race played in it. Up to the point where the prof showed his ID, it sounds like everything was done correctly; there's nothing wrong with a cop asking for ID to make sure you didn't just break into the house, but there's also nothing wrong with being ticked that cops showed up asking for your ID. After it was established that this is the guy's home, unless he was interfering with the cop's business, threatening him, or acting disorderly, there's no reason for the arrest, and the cop should have known this would blow up in his face. Without having been there and seen what happened though, its hard to say, but it looks to me from what I've heard like the cop was more of a jerk and an idiot than a racist.
July 23, 200915 yr I'm still not sure how I feel about that story seeing as there are conflicting accounts.... Conflicting?? Dr. Gates is one of the most prominate AA in the country! He can barely walk, he uses a cane. How is he breaking in? and once it's obvious hes in his own home, why drag him out without his cane then try to put him in a car, which he can't get into then go back into the home to get the cane? This whole episode is just crazy.
July 23, 200915 yr How is he breaking in? One report I read said that his front door got stuck and he opened it by hitting it with his shoulder. (or something to that effect) If I saw someone doing that from a distance it might look like a break-in, regardless of how infirm the individual may actually be. This whole episode is just crazy.Agreed. why drag him out without his cane then try to put him in a car, which he can't get into then go back into the home to get the cane?Stupid? Yes. Idiotic? Yes. Crazy? Yes. Overreaction? Yes. Racist? I'm not sure.

How is he breaking in? and once it's obvious hes in his own home, why drag him out without his cane then try to put him in a car, which he can't get into then go back into the home to get the cane? This whole episode is just crazy. I mean, there are conflicting reports as to what happened once the cops showed up. The police report says he was rather verbal towards them when they asked for ID (and no matter who you are, you don't back talk cops!), while he maintains that the cops acted racist and bullyish without being provoked by him. I believe it was somewhere between the two accounts - he probably did snap at the cops, but he had just gotten back from China, so honestly, who wouldn't get a little snippy after a trip like that. I think pulling the race card, personally, is blowing the whole thing out of proportion.

(or something to that effect) If I saw someone doing that from a distance it might look like a break-in, regardless of how infirm the individual may actually be. I totally agree. The caller and the police did the right thing. However, what transpired after he identified himself and was inside of his home is the problem. Now the police union has come to this idiots aid. Please. This is why, when I go to Metro Boston, I'm on alert. I get in..then get out.

Have you not read the actual police report? It paints an extremely negative picture of Mr Gates' actions. If the reporting officer is telling the truth, Gates' arrest was totally justified. It's a damn shame he pulled the race card and got out of trouble. According to the report: - He did NOT provide identification to the officers despite repeated requests - He screamed at the officers and refused to calm down - He threatened that the officers "didn't know who they were messing with" - He refused to listen to the officers trying to explain that they were called out by a concerned neighbor Also, his friend helped him break the door open with his shoulder. They were both wearing backpacks. It must have looked extremely suspicious, and they shouldn't have been so obtuse as to not think that a neighbor might have legitimately called the police.
