FAIRFIELD TWP. — Terry Brashear on Monday wrapped yellow caution tape around his property and posted a large sign in his yard as a protest. Last month the township's zoning department cited Brashear for several violations. The violations included storing commercial vehicles and commercial equipment on residential property, and failing to meet the criteria for operating a business on residential property.

I saw this story on the news last night and about vomited after taking it all in.  This guy is running a business out of his house (strike 1)...that business is an eyesore (strike 2)...that business also handles potentially hazardous materials (strike 3).

So the township informs him that he is in violation of the zoning code.  Instead of doing what he is susposed to do by law...the idiot erects a huge sign on his front lawn declaring 'I'm a nuisance' and wraps caution tape around his property.  Sorry buddy it doesn't matter what kind of flamboyant protest you do...you are clearly out of line with the zoning for that property.

He claimed "I'm just trying to make a living"...well thats fine, operate your business from a business property and there would be no problem.  Is it alright if someone runs a pawn shop out of their house...how about a dog daycare...or how about mulch/gravel business?  If the township lets this guy off, it sets a precendent.  There are plenty of areas where someone can operate a business and live nearby and/or at the business.  It just can't happen in a strictly residential neighborhood.

The man continually claims that "If they want a war...they got it"...well it is no war, and there should be no discussion.  YOU LOSE!!!  I don't know why everyone feels like they need to protest every damn move the government makes anymore.  Ever since the first successful eminent domain cases all of these other people have come out of the wordwork.  I for one am getting pretty tired of it!

You crack me up, Rando!

Not that I don't agree with you, but I find these kinds of things amusing (when they are in a township). The Fairfiled Ridge Animal Shelter NIMBYism is giving me a few laughs as well.

I guess this guy wants some sympathy from his neighbors, but he is just embarrasing himself.

The animal shelter thing is VERY amusing!

"I voted for it, but I wouldn' have if I knew it was going to be in my back yard"

Thats just great...thx for being a total moron!

^Yep.

I was very impressed with the Journal-News' editorial today on the subject; I usually don't agree with them on much.

Some humor for the Journal forums:

To the resident down the street. I’ll bet your a city kid? If you don’t like the country life move back to the city. It’s city people who moved out here and built it up and stole the beatuiful country side we farm kids call home. And when you sit down to eat THANK a FARMER for raising that food….

The man has lived and conducted his life in the same manner for 17 years. Any new laws voted-in should use the”Grandfather” clause and that he be permitted to live his life as he has for 17 years. It is no concilliation, but we are ALL losing our rights all over this nation…

To: “resident”… the one that lives near Terry… the one that didn’t state his/her real name… Let ME evaluate YOUR property and YOUR lifestyle… I guarantee you’re not perfect in any way, shape, or form.

The American Dream. Townships were generally all agriculture; owned by American farmers. They were the ones that made the rules, not some “city-slicker” Township official. Let the man live. America has too many winers and not enough workers like Terry.

I think it all depends on the neighborhood. The neighborhood I live in would tag you once then if you didn’t comply, you would come home to find your vehicles gone and a big fat fine and tow/storage bill taped to your front door. I haven’t seen the pictures but if someone is trying to make a living and it is just a matter of nit-picking by the zoning nazis over symantecs of running a business out of your home, then screw the Zoning Nazis. They are just trying to extort money from the little guy.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard/seen!!! If you aren’t for America, get out!!! I hate anything that has Fairfield written on it! I will NEVER live in Fairfield Township or Fairfield!!! Do the FF Township officials have anything better to do? Seriously? FF Township must have NO crime whatsoever if they’re wasting there time and money on Terry Brashear. No violence, no rape, no drugs. The only jackasses are the ones on the FF Township payroll. Ah, the American Dream.

The American Dream. FF Township needs more money, so they find a way to get it. Simple. Beat the hard working man into the ground and take his money. That’s the way to do it. H3ll, if I was him, I’d park some junk cars on blocks all over my front yard. Stupid officials. God help us all, man. To be continued…

From what I can read in tihs article, he has lived there and operated his business for at least 17 years. As far as I’m concerned all of you who decided to move inot his neighborhood have to live with. I absolutely HATE all the expansion in Butler county, especially Fairfield township and West Chester. I’m a lifelong resident of Butler county and wish West Chester was still the sleepy little community it used to be. Lower taxes, MUCH less traffic, teachers having sex with students, sex assaults.

the problem is that the county and the township has let this go for the last 30 years. Now they want to make all these changes and cut out the independent workers who by the way pay a great deal of TAXES.

What’s next?? Going after Farmers with tractors, wagons and other farm equipment sitting in the barnyard? These are hard working people. He lived and worked there 17 years. Leave the man alone.

i think they should leave the man alone and worry about other things. this man appearntly had no problems before. and now everyone wants to make a big deal out of nothing. i will try to be there and protest with him if i can cause this a B.S.

I think they should leave the man alone and let him do his work. As far as the other people living next door why should they care. It is not taking anything away from them. It may be different if he had all kinds of junk laying around.

Instead of then wasting there time with this issue why cant they concentrate more on important issues. Leave him alone, all he is trying to do is make a living.

Leave the man alone. These cities and townships have more to worry about than this gentleman. These zoning nazi’s get a littl ecarried away sometimes.

At least Mr. Brashear is working - a pretty hard thing to do in Butler County these days. His land, his business, leave him alone.

If he has operated his business for 17 years then the new neighbors should have know that .. that would be the only way sfter 17 years they would start to go after him.

Its his land and he pays the taxes.. enough said!!

Those kinds of comments make me sick to my stomach!

The guy may be out of line with the zoning, but I don't feel sorry for the people complaining around him.  They moved to a rural environment.  They should know that rural environments are actually working environments.  Farms, contractors, and others with big, messy land uses are the norm.  It's not all Norman Rockwell.

Those kinds of comments make me sick to my stomach!

Which comments?  There is alot more gray to this debate than you would like to believe.

^The bold comments...like this one:

"Do the FF Township officials have anything better to do? Seriously? FF Township must have NO crime whatsoever if they’re wasting there time and money on Terry Brashear. No violence, no rape, no drugs. The only jackasses are the ones on the FF Township payroll."

Agreement or disagreement with the zoning code doesn't change the fact that this guy is acting like a big baby.
