Lots of castles in that city.  This particular square has over 800 years of architecture around it.

Sweet.

Looks amazing!

awesome i am stopping there on a trip this summer. i am really looking forward to it!

Totally excellent.  Except that now I want to jump out of my office window and do something fun.  Thanks a lot.

Wonderful!!!  I have to agree with you about the Gehry building...one of his better works!  Can't wait to see some more of your European pictures!!!

Beautiful old city!

Could use some trees and one less Gehry, but other than that, beautiful!

^oh there were plenty of parks around there.  altho there were a lot of gardens/grassy areas that did not permit people to be on.

^Calvin don't tempt me to repost those photos of that guy in your frat with the fanny pack and the pinwheel cap missing the pinwheel.

Great pictures.  Was there in November and really enjoyed it.  Food was excellent and very cheap.  The traffic was horrific especially near the river--we walked that same sidewalk with the flimsy guardrails.  Yikes!  Did you get up to the castle and cathedral?  They are also spectacular and the streetcar ride up is fun, with several switchbacks.

Great pics indeed.  I visited there in 98 and really enjoyed it.  Did anyone ride the subways there?  The escalators down to the subway were the longest rides i've ever been on.  Another note, the cars were so outdated, a reminder of how the country operated under communism.

nice. very cool place. lots of old density. we like that!

did you get a visit from the green fairy while you were there (that is to say, did you try some absinthe)?

The subway was clean and efficient.  Soviet era cars, but the stations were nice if a bit dated.  Didn't notice the normal passenger cars being any older than normal, though.  We took a streetcar away from the center to the end of the line to see what a non-tourist neighborhood looks like.  Vast difference from inner city to city edges.  Lots of commie blocks and bleak squares.  Pretty unimaginative architecture.  Give it a few more years and the transformation will be complete.

I actually opted not to ride the street cars or any public transport.  the city felt so walkable that i just went everywhere by foot.  you get to experience the city a lot better that way too.  its so dense.  on the map we were staying close to the gehry building and it looked like it would be a really far way up the river to where the tourist stuff is, but in a matter of maybe 10 minutes we were already there.

haha we almost got the green fairy... it was rather cheap!  but we opted for the amazing beer there instead.

^No loss on the absinthe- I believe modern science has exposed the stuff as nothing more than a subpar aparatif (i.e., wormwood is a crock).  A little pivo on the other hand...
