Posted April 3, 200718 yr  March 2, 2007 The Director of the National Park Service is pleased to send you the following announcements and actions on properties for the National Register of Historic Places ... OHIO, CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Superior Avenue Historic District, 1860-2553 Superior Ave., Cleveland, 07000072, LISTED, 2/21/07 By my count, and assuming that this only covers buildings fronting Superior, this includes about 25 properties. Anyone have any further information on what's being planned down here or thoughts on what the historic designation will do for increasing investments in rehab, etc.? http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/listings/20070302.HTM
April 3, 200718 yr Looks like the stretch of superior from the PD to the innerbelt. I don't think that really changes what is currently being done there. Its good it got the designation, prevents people from doing dumb stuff to the nice stuff thats still there.
April 3, 200718 yr Could this designation keep ODOT from taking any of the buildings on Superior near the trench?
April 3, 200718 yr As I recall the buildings under threat by ODOT that were near the trench and on superior ave, were on the other side of the innerbelt. The particular building of interest, which I belive contains a dainels furnature warehouse, and is in at least ~some~ photo thread on here; is not part of the designated historic district. Its a real shame, it really should be, its aproxmimately the same age and same style as the ones that got protected.
April 4, 200718 yr FYI on National Register listing: It does not provide any control over exterior modifications, etc. -- in other words, no protection against someone doing something dumb (even demolition) -- that protection would have to come from local legislation. It also does not necessarily safeguard these properties in an ODOT project, provided no federal monies are being used. What it does do is allow property owners to use the Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit, the new Ohio Historic Tax Credit, and the deduction for preservation easement donation (a pretty good combo).
August 15, 200717 yr The first of three public art pieces has been placed in the Superior Ave. Historic District (roughly E. 23rdish). It is a large pavillion that looks really cool ... very industrial. The remaining two will be installed over the next few months and will be lit after a public dedication (I'm told they'll have a cool glow to them. One will be in front of Phoenix Coffee and the other in front of Tower Press. All three pay tribute to the industrial heritage of the neighborhood, and all three are permanent installations. I'll try to snag a picture of the first piece sometime soon.
August 27, 200717 yr i think i saw one thats like six steam shovels facing in on each other in a circular shape...
August 28, 200717 yr I saw that one a little over a week ago when me and my boss went to lunch at BoLong with Gwathmy. Completely took me by surprise. It looked very cool.
September 4, 200717 yr The basic structures for all three are now up. There are renderings at www.clevelandpublicart.org (click on Projects and then on % for Art).
