Vote "yes" Port Authority!!

Cleveland Museum of Art asks Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Autority to float $75 million bond issue for museum expansion

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

With some low-risk help from the Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Authority, the big expansion at the Cleveland Museum of Art can be finished in 2013.A vote Tuesday by the board of the Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Authority could launch a $75 million bond issue needed by the Cleveland Museum of Art to finish its massive expansion and renovation on time in 2013.

The museum is asking the port authority for the second time in five years to be the "conduit-issuer" of construction bonds, which will be repaid with donations the museum expects to receive in its $350 million capital campaign.

In 2005, the museum sold $90 million in bonds through the port authority. Then, as now, the borrowing is intended to help the museum with cash flow, so it can pay construction costs in a timely manner while gathering donations from supporters over a longer period.

With the new bond issue, as with the earlier one, the port authority's debt capacity and credit rating would not be affected. A "yes" vote by the port authority board, however, would mean the museum could snip a ribbon in 2013.

Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Authority approves $75 million bond issue for Cleveland Museum of Art expansion

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

June 08, 2010, 11:00AM

The Cleveland Museum of Art got what it wanted from the board of the Cleveland Cuyahoga County Port Authority today – a 6-0 vote approving port issuance of $75 million in tax-exempt bonds.

The vote means the museum will have access to the cash it needs to finish a $350 million expansion and renovation on time in 2013. The museum's board is scheduled to vote Monday on whether to proceed with the final phase of construction, which started in 2005.

"We're going to get it done, we're going to get it done," a smiling Janet Ashe, the museum's treasurer and deputy director for administration," said immediately after the port vote today.

William Friedman, the port's new president and chief executive officer, called the vote, "my first success. I'll claim it. Why not?"

From IdeaStream:

The Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority will finance up to 75 million dollars to complete renovations at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Port Authority Board agreed to issue the bonds at a special meeting held Tuesday, putting the museum on target for completing the $350 million dollar project by 2013.

So far, the museum has raised $220 million dollars toward the renovation, which began in 2005 and will include new east and west wings.  East wing galleries opened last year, and the renovated 1916 main building the year before.

Cleveland Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees Approves Completion of Building and Renovation Project

Submitted by Leader Staff on June 15, 2010 - 11:23am.

Arts Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Local News News

A vote Monday afternoon by the  Cleveland Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees confirms the museum will take the final step in its building and expansion project with planned completion in 2013. In a unanimous vote, the board approved completion of the final phase of the project at its regularly scheduled June meeting.

Throughout the past 18 months, the leadership of the museum has taken a strategic, phased approach to the management of the renovation and expansion in order to ensure that the museum appropriately paced the project with its fundraising and financing. In December 2009, the board approved the construction of the museum’s west wing structure; atrium roof and enclosures; and administrative offices, as well as mechanicals, electrical and plumbing throughout the building. With this final vote yesterday, the board approved the last step of the final phase of the project, namely interior finishes of the north and west wings currently under construction, including flooring, painting and interior glass; landscaping in the atrium and throughout the museum’s campus; and the build-out of the new Lifelong Learning Center, museum store and dining facilities.

“This is an exciting day for the Cleveland Museum of Art and for Cleveland,” said Deborah Gribbon, interim director of the museum. “With this vote of approval, the board has demonstrated its full commitment to the completion of this transformational project, designed to enhance the museum’s position as a community center and cultural resource for the region and beyond.”

Cleveland Museum of Art board OKs renovation's final phase

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The next stop for the $350 million expansion and renovation at the Cleveland Museum of Art is the finish line in three years.

On Monday, trustees of the museum voted unanimously to press ahead with the final phase of construction, which will include completion of a vast, skylighted atrium, and a new West Wing, which will house the museum's world-famous collection of Asian art.

"Not only am I thrilled, absolutely everybody in the room is thrilled," said Al Rankin, president of the museum's board.

He said 23 of 29 voting trustees approved "Step D" of the project, which includes making new interiors ready to receive art at the end of 2012.

Agreed. But they could have abstained or not been present for the meeting.

I'm sure its aversion to risk

I would have to agree with 3231 that there probably weren't any "nay" votes ... The article seems to indicate that the decision was unanimous.

Went to the museum on sunday one last time before I ship out and the glass on the atrium is being installed!  Looking good!

^Nice!  That's going to be one of the best off-season venues in the whole area when finished.

For sure, I am still single and lovin' it but I have to admit, if I were to get married it would be pretty sweet to hold the reception in the new atrium from the progress/renderings I have seen.  I am pumped.

Another article about the new director of the Museum.

I do like that he wants to see life again around the fine arts garden and lagoon area.  He seems to have a fresh vision and came in with an appreciation for what is there that sometimes the locales lack (although on paper he may lack the experience running a major museum).

David Franklin looks ahead to productive years as director of Cleveland Museum of ArtPublished: Sunday, January 02, 2011, 9:00 AM

By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer

David Franklin has been the new director of the Cleveland Museum of Art for only a few months, but he definitely has a favorite hangout at work.

It's the glass-enclosed gallery devoted to the sculptures of Auguste Rodin on the southern tip of the museum's new East Wing.

http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2011/01/david_franklin_looks_ahead_to.html

Bring some attention to the fine arts garden is great, people are always out there taking pictures or just sitting in the grass enjoying the calm in the middle of the city.

I went to the art museum for the first time post-expansion. After visiting a number of museums in London, Manchester, York, Paris, Warsaw and elsewhere in Europe, I must say that I am VERY impressed with our "new" art museum. Even the 1916-built portion looks renovated too. Did that section also get attention? And I like the glass corridor around the southeast corner of the building. It offers a great view of University Circle.

The only thing I didn't like was the the confusing and less than impressive lobby and accessways from the parking deck into the central part of the museum. It seemed like we were entering in a secret rear entrance, if not for the admissions area, coat room and other things you expect to see in the lobby. Kind of a dreary first impression of an otherwise amazing museum.

Yes.  The 1916 building was renovated as well.

KJP you should take a look at the museum website which gives a complete overview of the renovations to give you a better idea of what is being done.

Couple of things...the project is far from over and is still a construction zone which explains your entrance issues.  Most people will probably enter through the unfinished atrium which will be amazing, impressive and not dreary.

Yes the 1916 building was totally renovated (in fact it was closed for quite some time during the renovation) and in fact significant portions of it are still not open.

Don't take this the wrong way but I would have thought you of all people on this board would have been more up to date on the renovations, especially given how long they have been in the works.

I've had my head stuck up the ass of 3C for the past two years. I'm way behind on knowing what's going on development-wise around town.

So how's District Park coming along?? :-D

Top 10 Museums in the US for Families

With so many choices and varieties, it can be easy to become overwhelmed with culture in the United States. In particular, families with teens and kids can become confused about which exhibits are age appropriate and when to go. Luckily, these ten museums have the exhibits and amenities that work perfectly for families and it just so happens that they're among the best collections in the country. So pack up the entire family and visit these top 10 US museums.

Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio

With such an extensive collection of works, you'd think the Cleveland Museum of Art frowned on bringing young children. However, they couldn't be happier to host the entire family and feel art can have an effect on children as young as preschool-aged. Strollers to rent are available at the front desk and an in-house café is stocked with fruits and veggies they'll love to nibble on.

Must see: Get a map and be sure to tour the names everyone in the family will know and understand. Van Gogh, Degas, Picasso... the familiarity will be a great bonding experience

WOW!  Thanks, nice find.

This project is looking more and more like a gem.

^^Thanks!

I had an opportunity to tour the current phase of the museum.  A couple of tidbits I learned.

- The weight of the atrium structure is over 1,100,000 lbs.....gee that its!

- There are circulating water lines in the trusses to prevent condensation build up.

- The floor of the atrium will have radiant heat piping to maintain a temperature of at least 72 deg to a level 10'-0"  above the floor.

- Construction still is on schedule.

- When the 1958 addition was constructed, they tore into the existing north facade marble to tie-in the new structure.  The quarry used for the 1916 marble was closed shortly after....however they reopened it briefly so that they could extract new pieces to closely match the existing and repair the north facade to it's original state.  I thought that was pretty cool.

- They have already had over 850 RFI's and had over 400 submittals to review.

A few pics.  They aren't the best since I used my droid but they get the job done.

Thanks for the update!  Interesting note about the marble quarry.

What a fantastic asset CMA is to NE Ohio!

Thank you for the great pictures and interesting tidbits.  It is good to be kept informed on this very important project.

I'm not sure where else this would be more appropriate, considering it has little to do with the renovation, but I just wanted to say kudos to CMA for providing what was apparently an excellent special guided tour to a visiting foreign delegation this past weekend. The Curator of Asian Art, Anita Chung, personally gave them a tour of all the principle galleries, although most of the Asian Art is apparently not on display during the renovation. I'm connected with several of the people on the tour and they enjoyed it quite a bit, and, to a man/woman, decided that the Cleveland museum was far and away the best one they'd seen on their trip to the US.

Cleveland Museum of Art will be expanding with a new restaurant:

Doug Katz of Fire Food and Drink will create restaurant, catering for Cleveland Museum of Art

Rumors of a "next" project for artful chef Doug Katz turn out to be big news. Next year, the Fire Food and Drink restaurateur will orchestrate a new restaurant, redesigned cafe and all catering operations for the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Katz, a long-standing advocate of the farm-to-table philosophy of locally grown ingredients, will work with Bon Appetit Management in operating the eateries. Bon Appetit has earned increasing respect for its own environmentally responsible initiatives.

The restaurant and cafe are expected to open in fall 2012, in a 39,000-square-foot atrium, "which will serve as the visual and spatial heart of the museum," according to a release from art museum officials.

Updated photos from The museum's official website. They can be seen under "recent construction slideshow".  I cannot wait to see the finished product.  One of the photos shows the east wing addition receiving some work outside of The East Wing glass box. Does anyone know what is happening to that space?

it appears to be an outdoor roof top patio area.  not sure if it will always be open or only for special events.

I believe that area was just gravel previously.  Unless they are just fixing a leak or something, it may be nice to have as a terrace area.
