The expansion project, which will widen the airport's 12,000-foot primary runway, is already underway, funded by a previously announced federal grant.  The newly announced grant will pay for a second phase of construction that will start in the spring.  The federal funding will also support upgrading the runway’s electrical infrastructure.

I haven't seen any official news about this anywhere, but it seems Rickenbacker has added another international cargo destination. I've noticed fairly regular flights between LCK and Manila on Philippine Airlines for about the past two weeks or so. This comes on the heels of Korean starting service to LCK which has been operating 1-2 times daily.

Starting June 3rd, Allegiant will be offering a twice weekly flight from LCK to Norfolk. This route was planned to begin this past summer, but those plans were derailed due to Covid.

That's what all that racket was when I was leaving for work. I'm used to planes flying over all the time but these were something else!

Haha yep! I'm used to the 747s and 777s rumbling over Groveport. These were a lot different, so I looked out my window just in time to see them fly over. They actually flew around a couple times before landing.

Good on LCK in getting into vaccine distribution logistics. The cold storage unit should prove useful beyond covid, as there are quite a few specialty shipments that require such handling:

Only $1.5M? That's how much the frozen and chilled food section at a Kroger costs.

I think it's because they repurposed a hangar rather than building a new one. My guess is it's probably not much bigger than a Kroger frozen and chilled section...😆

Rickenbacker to test technology for improving drone safety

The Federal Aviation Administration has picked Rickenbacker International Airport as one of five U.S. airports where officials will assess the ability of new technologies and systems to "detect and mitigate" safety risks posed by unmanned aerial drones.

( . . . )

Researchers plan to test and evaluate at least 10 technologies or systems at these airports, the FAA stated, without identifying which technologies and who had developed them.  Testing will begin later this year and continue through 2023, the FAA said.

The results of the research and tests will help create standards for future drone detection and mitigation technologies at U.S. airports.

^ Another larger cold storage facility is being proposed for Rickenbacker:

Crawford Hoying plans $20.9 million cold storage facility near Rickenbacker

One of Central Ohio's busiest developers plans to build a $20.9 million speculative cold storage office building near Rickenbacker International Airport.  Columbus City Council had a first reading Monday on a 10-year, 75% Enterprise Zone tax abatement for the project, which is expected to create 10 new full-time office jobs.

The B Miller Street facility will be approximately 165,000 square feet, and does not currently have a tenant signed on, according to the legislation.  Shook Road Storage, LLC, a partnership made up of three members of Crawford Hoying, is overseeing the project. ... Pending Columbus City Council approval of the tax incentive, the project is estimated to be finished by August 2022, with real property improvements beginning in September 2021.

Rickenbacker International Airport’s 12,000-foot main runway is now open after completing a series of renovations that Columbus airport authority officials hope will help the region more easily receive cargo during a time when the global supply chain is under pressure.

The runway’s new improvements include asphalt resurfacing that allows it to better serve the Boeing 747-8F cargo plane, the largest variant of the 747, regularly flown by Rickenbacker’s cargo carriers.  The runway also now has 40-foot shoulders and expanded blast pads, upgraded lighting and signage, and airfield navigational aids have been relocated and replaced.

The improvements at Rickenbacker come amid rapid growth at the airport.  International cargo volumes in September were up 65% compared to the same month last year.  Business First has previously reported that the airport expects a tenfold increase in air cargo volume through 2037.

Over in the Intel Semiconductor Facility thread someone pointed out that Time magazine reported that although this new factory will manufacture new chips in Central Ohio, Intel’s chips will still be sent to Asia for assembly, packaging, and testing.

And since that means cargo flights to Asia, I pointed out in the below post that Rickenbacker Airport's proximity to the New Albany location probably had an impact on Intel choosing this Central Ohio location:

If this is the case, I'm surprised that people aren't making more of the Rickenbacker Airport connection to Intel's plant location in Central Ohio.  John Glenn is Columbus' mostly passenger airport, while Rickenbacker is Columbus' mostly cargo airport:

https://forum.urbanohio.com/topic/394-columbus-rickenbacker-international-airport

As has been well-documented in the above Rickenbacker Airport thread, their cargo numbers have been increasing over the past 10+ years.  But those cargo numbers took an even bigger increase during the pandemic as Rickenbacker became a hub for international PPE flights from Asia.  The pandemic pushed Rickenbacker's cargo flights and tonnage numbers to record levels in 2020, and they've only gone up since then.

Rickenbacker added new direct flights from multiple Asian countries in the past two years:

As well as a newly expanded runway to better serve the Boeing 747-8F cargo plane, which is the largest variant of the 747, regularly flown by Rickenbacker’s cargo carriers from previously existing Asian and international flight locations:

^ And speaking of those record cargo numbers at Rickenbacker:

Columbus’ cargo airport just had its best year ever while passenger traffic there continues to grow

Rickenbacker International Airport had its best year in history in 2021, representing more growth for Columbus’ presence as a cargo and logistics hub. ... Rickenbacker handled 153,600 metric tons of cargo on 4,473 flights in 2021, according to Columbus Regional Airport Authority.  In 2020, Rickenbacker saw 3,822 cargo flights carrying nearly 120,000 metric tons.

Although Rickenbacker saw a boost of business in 2020 from personal protective equipment shipments related to Covid-19, airport authority officials said that PPE was not the primary driver of growth in 2021.  “There was robust activity in clothing, fashion and footwear among other retail products,” airport spokeswoman Sarah McQuaide told us.  “We also saw significant amounts of auto parts, electronics, consumer goods, manufacturing materials, and non-temperature controlled pharmaceutical and medical shipments."

From the reporting of Columbus Business First, it sounds like there have been increased scheduled cargo service routes to multiple Asia countries over the past 10+ years, and additional countries added during the last two pandemic years.

Emirates, Qatar, Turkish, also have weekly scheduled cargo flights through their respective hubs to LCK. Charter flights are also plentiful and are operated primarily by HiFly, Kalitta, National, and others.

Air show returns to Rickenbacker Airport in 2023

Look to the sky for some exciting sights in the summer of 2023.

That’s because, after a several year absence, the Columbus Air Show returns on June 17-18, 2023 at Rickenbacker International Airport, 2241 John Circle Drive, Columbus.

“The last show at Rickenbacker Airport was 2007’s Gathering of Mustangs and Legends that drew more than 150,000 guests,” said Herb Gillen, president of Herb Gillen Air Shows.

When asked why the air show is returning after all these years, Gillen said, “Our company has produced and marketed air shows across the country and we’ve always wanted to do a show here in our own hometown. After a several year absence, the Columbus Regional Airport Authority was receptive to doing a show. There was consideration of doing shows before this, but due to different circumstances (airport construction, lack of a jet team, other things) the show did not move forward.”

Used to love going to it when I was a kid. We'd be able to watch them practice from our yard in the days leading up to it.

Airport officials ready $12 million rehab project at Rickenbacker International Airport

Rickenbacker International Airport is readying a nearly $12 million runway rehab project.

Following last week’s Columbus Regional Airport Authority meeting, airport officials now have the OK to pursue a U.S. Department of Defense grant. The grant, part of the Defense Community Infrastructure Pilot Program, would fund about two-thirds, $7.96 million, of the project’s overall $11.8 million price tag. The remaining $3.9 million would come from the authority’s reserves.

“The grant would help fund reconstruction of the second runway at Rickenbacker and extend the life of this important asset serving both, our military and commercial aviation partners," Breann Gonzalez Almos, the authority's communications and media relations manager, told me in an email.

ODW Logistics adds 930,000-square-foot distribution center to its growing campus near Rickenbacker

"ODW Logistics will soon open a second distribution center at its new campus near Rickenbacker International Airport.

The third-party logistics provider – already one of the region's largest private companies and employers – will add a 930,000-square-foot facility to its local footprint.

Located at 6920 Schieser Farms Rd. East in Lockbourne, the distribution center is set to open in mid-June. It will employ 75 to 100 people.

This marks the second building on ODW's growing distribution campus. With the new facility, the company will have 5 million square feet of warehouse space in Central Ohio. Nationally, ODW has 32 facilities and 9 million square feet of space.

In the fall, Ness told Columbus Business First that they were already planning a second distribution center on the Lockbourne campus when the company announced its first project. That 540,000-square-foot facility, located at 1533 Rohr Road, recently became operational."
