Allegiant will begin service to Austin from Rickenbacker next year

The next nonstop destination from Rickenbacker Airport looks a lot like the last one announced for John Glenn Columbus International Airport.  It’s Austin.

Allegiant Air is announcing new service to Texas’ capital city Thursday, almost exactly a month after Frontier Airlines announced service from Columbus to Austin.

Both routes will launch next year.  Allegiant, the only regularly scheduled passenger carrier at cargo-focused Rickenbacker, will start service Feb. 16.  Flights will be offered twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays.  Tickets go on sale Thursday, starting at $55 one way.

News about more warehouse development occurring next to Rickenbacker.  This first one is from May:

Central Ohio’s largest-ever spec building coming to Rickenbacker

By Evan Weese, Columbus Business First

Posted on May 23, 2017

A 1.02 million-square-foot warehouse is going up near Rickenbacker International Airport in what’s being touted as Central Ohio’s largest-ever spec building.  Kansas City-based NorthPoint Development has cleared land south of the cargo airport to begin building the first of three bulk distribution facilities, a warehouse that will be expandable to 1.23 million square feet, according to the developer’s website.

NorthPoint says the three-building industrial park, east of the Norfolk Southern Intermodal Yard, will be able to accommodate 2.1 million square feet of space at full build-out.  The first building, on 78 acres, is expected to be completed in November.

Pizzuti teeing up $34.5M expansion of Rickenbacker industrial park

By Tristan Navera, Columbus Business First

Posted on September 18, 2017

Pizzuti Companies is planning a much as 1.5 million square feet of industrial space in its latest investment near Rickenbacker International Airport.

The Columbus-based developer is proposing to build three industrial warehouses on a speculative basis near Beggrow Street in what would be a $34.4 million investment around the airport's growing distribution hub.  The project, called "Rickenbacker West," would bring large, rail-served cross-dock facilities near Norfolk Southern's intermodal terminal at Rickenbacker, according to city documents.

The first of these would be an 802,000-square-foot warehouse with the ability to expand to 1 million square feet.  "Phase two has been eleven years in the making," said Pizzuti executive vice president Bill Brennan. "We're starting a speculative building this fall and based on the success of the first building."  Construction on that building is to begin in October and be completed by June 2018.

You'd think the FAA would have official numbers. They also reported only 102,751 enplanements at Rickenbacker for 2016.

^Since when is cargo expressed in lbs instead of tonnage? Is this to make the number BIGGER than actual?

Enplanements =/= total pax

I think enplanements is a more accurate marker then. Thanks for the clarification. Any info on the cargo numbers being so different?

ETA I looked through the link. So "total cargo" and "landed cargo" are the two categories. You'd think total cargo would be higher like total passengers.

Enplanements i believe are passengers departing. "total Passengers" is people arriving AND people departing. So, usually, the number of enplanments for an airport is one-half the number of "passengers".

First Look: Rickenbacker Airport master plan would increase cargo capacity by tenfold

By Carrie Ghose  – Staff reporter, Columbus Business First

March 13, 2018, 1:56pm EDT

Rickenbacker International Airport's cargo capacity would increase by tenfold over the next 20 years under recommendations to update its master plan.  A record 255 million pounds of cargo went through the airport on the south side of Columbus last year - a 27 percent increase over 2016 - with international shipments largely responsible for the increase.

The proposals call for adding taxiways on either side of the runway for more efficient movement of planes, as well as adding seven air cargo transfer stations, where cargo planes are unloaded to waiting trucks.  There currently are four, the largest operated by FedEx.

( . . . )

Other proposals that wouldn't require as much construction include enhancing the passenger terminal with more efficient ticketing, queuing and gates; and accommodating an increase in use by privately owned aircraft.  Rickenbacker's passenger traffic increased by 31 percent to 266,000 in 2017, much smaller than John Glenn Columbus International Airport's 7.5 million.

Costs for the proposals are still being determined.

Macy's to open e-commerce distribution center near Rickenbacker Airport with more than 400 jobs

Macy's Inc. plans to open a Columbus e-commerce distribution center near Rickenbacker International Airport that will create 410 full-time equivalent jobs.

http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180605/new-cargo-flights-for-rickenbacker-expansion-at-area-distribution-centers

-- Rickenbacker Airport and its surrounding logistics hub continue to grow, with new cargo flights and new tenants moving into warehouse space.  Two of the companies operating international freighters — Cargolux and Emirates — have recently each added a fourth weekly flight there, joining the inaugural weekly flight added by Russia-based AirBridgeCargo in April, according to the Columbus Regional Airport Authority.  Rickenbacker now has 16 weekly scheduled international cargo flights in addition to the regular domestic activity there from FedEx and UPS.

-- On the real-estate front, the airport authority, in partnership with Duke Realty and Capital Square Limited, has begun developing a 1.2 million-square-foot distribution center for Goodyear in Rickenbacker Global Logistics Park.  Other new or expanding tenants include Macy’s, which plans to hire more than 400 people by next year to support distribution for its Backstage discount concept; Cheryl & Co. is undertaking a $1.5 million upgrade to its facility on Industrial Center Drive, which will add 27 jobs; and Radial, a company that handles e-commerce fulfillment and transportation for retailers, which is adding 100 jobs at its location on Port Road.

http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180613/rickenbacker-gets-faa-grant-to-help-complete-taxiway-project

-- Cargo-focused Rickenbacker Airport has been awarded a $7.4 million infrastructure grant from the Federal Aviation Administration.  The money will be used for the third phase of a three-part taxiway-rehabilitation project at the airport, which has been seeing double-digit percentage growth in the amount of cargo being shipped.

-- This is the third year in a row that Rickenbacker has received similar grants from the FAA for the taxiway project.  This award brings the total to $22.2 million.

-- Rickenbacker’s growth has been driven by the addition of flights from major international shippers, which serve Columbus’ strong retailing and apparel industry.  Widened runways, that are part of this project, will accommodate the largest class of aircraft from these international shippers, including Cargolux, Emirates and Etihad.

"A tenfold increase in cargo volume at Rickenbacker International Airport is expected to spur $1.3 billion in development – about half the total from private carriers building their own terminals, according to the next 20-year master plan.

About $49 million in runway and infrastructure improvements through the next two years will seed that growth, according to a summary presented to the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. Rickenbacker's foreign-trade zone climbs in national ranking, clears $10B mark for goods passing through

"The foreign-trade zone based at Columbus' Rickenbacker International Airport is growing, with $10.4 billion worth of goods moving through warehousing and distribution channels in the zone in 2018, according to a new federal report.

That’s a more than 12% increase over 2017, when $9.26 billion worth of goods moved through the zone. That means more businesses are taking advantage of the zone’s ability to defer or reduce customs duties. The report, from the International Trade Administration, was released in November.

An FTZ, as it’s called, is a U.S. site that is legally out of customs territory, meaning that goods may be brought into the site duty-free and without formal customs entry.

The Rickenbacker zone, known as FTZ 138, is now ranked No. 7 in the country, out of 195 total active zones, for the amount of merchandise received, a two-spot jump since 2017. The No. 1-ranked zone in 2018 is in Gramcery, Louisiana, followed by Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York and South Carolina.

FTZ 138 currently has 16 businesses participating."

Opportunity zone investor buys 45-acre townhome community near Rickenbacker Airport

A Pittsburgh-area firm specializing in opportunity zones plans to redevelop a 376-unit community near Rickenbacker International Airport.  Alpha Capital Partners has acquired Hamilton Creek Apartments at 14 Oak Road in Columbus.  The 45-acre townhome-style apartment complex was built in 1960 and consists mostly of two and three-bedroom townhomes.

The site's proximity to the substantial Rickenbacker logistics hub inspired the investment, Alpha Capital Partners CEO Jide Famuagun said in a statement.  "Our redevelopment efforts will give this former military housing the necessary boost it needs to beautify the neighborhood and attract new residents.  What also drew our attention to this property was the massive industrial distribution centers and the boom in employment these facilities brought.”

Alpha said it plans to rebrand the complex and invest $9 million in upgrades, with work to begin this fall including exterior renovations and interior updates.  Its in-house construction team will continue to work on the project into 2021.

Dallas developer building 382-acre logistics park near Rickenbacker

Dallas developer CT Realty has lined up plans for a 382-acre logistics park near Rickenbacker International Airport.  The company plans 5.7 million square feet of industrial development along Air Base Road and Lockbourne Road near the Norfolk Southern intermodal rail yard in northern Pickaway County.  The first phase of the development – two industrial buildings totaling 1.47 million square feet – will begin in the first quarter of 2020, with a targeted completion date in early 2021.

( . . . )

Brain Marsh and Dan Wendorf with JLL brokered the land sale and will represent the project in leasing to tenants.  JLL data show nearly 9.9 million square feet of new industrial space planned to come online in the first half of this year, likely to be a record.  But modern industrial vacancy across the market shrunk to 4.7% at the end of 2019 despite a rigorous year for construction, and JLL predicts demand at Rickenbacker will continue to drive more.  "There's strong tenant interest in the space here in town, so that's fueling development activity this year," Wendorf said.  "Tenants are leasing up the new property as quickly as it comes online."

YMCA selling 56-acre park near Rickenbacker

The YMCA of Central Ohio is looking to sell a big piece of real estate near Rickenbacker International Airport.  The 56-acre Hoover YMCA Park at 1570 Rohr Road has an asking price of $1.5 million.  It sits at the corner of Rohr and Bixby roads in Lockbourne, about 2 miles northwest of Rickenbacker International Airport.  The YMCA says the land doesn't yet have a buyer but that the park doesn't mesh with its future investment plans. ... The property is located inside an opportunity zone and is currently zoned rural.

The growth of the Rickenbacker area – whose trade zone saw $10.4 billion worth of goods pass through in 2018 – has prompted substantial industrial development, with the most recent project being CTRealty's 382-acre planned logistics park to the south in Pickaway County.  This in turn has spurred multiple housing developments nearby looking to take advantage of the growing job base at and around the airport.

Rickenbacker employs more than 15,000, representing more than $880 million in payroll, according to the Rickenbacker Area Study completed last year by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission.

That's kind of a shame but I can see why they are doing it. Nationally the Y used to keep a lot of land used for campgrounds, motocross tracks, fishing and whatnot but I don't think that's their main focus anymore. At $1.5 million, the 56 acres will get $26,785.71 per acre, which is a lot of money. The hippies/layabouts/paranoid Boomers that have parked their RVs on the site long term might get cranky though.

I wish the city would buy it and make it a park. Unfortunately, that old quarry lake right next door is slated to be filled with sludge from water treatment. That could have been an awesome >400 acre park with a lake, and direct access to Big Walnut Creek at its largest. Instead we get a sludge pit and some warehouses I'm sure. I guess only the cool people north of 70 are worthy of quarry parks. I'd be pretty upset to live in any of those nice 50s-70s houses there on Rohr.

Edit. It appears the city bought the quarry across Lockbourne Rd to fill with sludge. The one right next to the Y property is still owned by Shelly and Sands. So come on, Columbus. Give us a 162 acre quarry park in the Uncool Crescent! But seriously, Hamilton Township can't afford it, but Metro Parks could!

John Glenn Columbus Airport battered by pandemic

Data show just how hard John Glenn Columbus International Airport has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Passenger traffic has been running about 96% below where it was a year ago when it set a record.

Read more: https://www.dispatch.com/business/20200428/john-glenn-columbus-airport-battered-by-pandemic

The above linked article also contains this info on how the cargo-focused Rickenbacker Airport is faring during the coronavirus:

"While regularly scheduled cargo traffic at Rickenbacker is lower, there has been an influx of fights from China, and the airport has become a destination for medical supplies from overseas.  Unlike other revenue sources during the pandemic, revenue from cargo service is expected to be down just 3% in April and May."

^Definitely a small silver lining during an immensely difficult time. International air cargo demand has been the only somewhat healthy sector in the industry thus far.

RCS Logistics used to land planes full of clothes and apparel at Rickenbacker International Airport.  Today, it’s bringing hundreds of tons of personal protective equipment from Asia.  The Hong Kong-based air freight forwarder is among logistics companies adapting in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic to help connect health care providers with badly needed medical supplies.

Since mid-March, RCS has been handling three Kalitta Air flights per week with between 300,000 and 500,000 kilos of medical supplies from Shanghai.  Separate deliveries by carriers Cathay Pacific and Cargolux are coming in from Hong Kong.  The flights had been scheduled to carry retail apparel but, thanks to referrals from RCS customers and state contacts, now include millions of N95 masks, scrubs, gowns, goggles and ventilators.

New direct flight from Vietnam to Columbus aims to keep up with Covid-19 demand

A global logistics company with a presence in Central Ohio has launched Columbus’ first nonstop freight flights to Vietnam.  In order to keep up with new demand created by Covid-19, New York-based Wen-Parker Logistics is chartering flights carrying personal protective gear from Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Vietnam, to Rickenbacker International Airport.

Wen-Parker Logistics, a global freight forwarder with a presence in 80 countries, has a U.S. office in Groveport as well as a warehouse facility in Columbus.  “This marks a major milestone for Wen-Parker, Rickenbacker and our region,” said Bryan Schreiber, manager of air cargo business for the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which owns and operates Rickenbacker.

The flights will continue through the end of June.  The CRAA says Rickenbacker is an ideal airport for such freight flights because it is a cargo-dedicated airport and is located within a 10-hour drive of half of the U.S. and a third of the Canadian populations.

Rickenbacker International Airport is setting records during Covid-19 despite tourism slowdown

Columbus' cargo airport is setting records for traffic during Covid-19 thanks to high shipments of personal protective equipment coming into the region.  Rickenbacker International Airport in June set all-time records for both the number of international freighters that arrived, as well as the tonnage of cargo that was offloaded, according to the Columbus Regional Airport Authority.

There were 120 international arrivals, more than the previous record of 109 arrivals set in November 2018.  In addition, 20.2 million pounds of cargo were offloaded, surpassing the previous record of 15.9 million pounds.  That record was also set in November 2018.

The growth of freight flights at Rickenbacker follows a surge of economic development activity in the area:

Cargo partnership links Columbus airport to Seoul

Columbus’ cargo airport is now directly connected to a new international destination: Seoul, South Korea.  Through a new partnership between Korean Air Cargo and the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, the Korean airline last Thursday started using two of its Boeing 777-300 passenger aircraft to make six new nonstop cargo flights weekly out of Rickenbacker International Airport.

The airline is using passenger aircraft because they are now sitting idle as international passenger flights remain suspended amid the Covid-19 pandemic. ... Rickenbacker is the only airport currently serving Korean Air Cargo’s cargo-converted aircraft.  The seats have been removed from the planes in order to make room for clothing, automobile parts, electronics and other products from the airline’s Seoul’s cargo hub to make way to Columbus.

“Columbus is an emerging cargo base for American retail distribution and logistics companies,” JD Eum, senior vice president of Korean Air Cargo, said in a statement. “We are pleased to enter into this new partnership with Rickenbacker, a leading cargo airport that is helping us connect with our customers around the globe.”

I’m thinking Rickenbacker could use a second runway fairly soon....

^Rickenbacker already has two runways.

Generally, many of these large warehouses are generating truck traffic but may or may not use the airport or rail intermodal facilities.
