Posted April 16, 200718 yr Has anyone been to the rooftop bar of the Terrace Hotel at 6th and Vine? I had post wedding breakfast up there and I feel like with a little TLC and some vision, the spot could become a trendy "Ghost" Bar style club in Downtown Cincinnati. I'm sure if those condo's ever got built there it might have been something, but its worth considering. Has anyone been up there? If not I recommend checking it out and seeing if the owners plan to do anything with the space. As far as I know, it was a restaurant in the 80's and early 90's but doesnt see much action. Ian
April 16, 200718 yr I was up there a few months ago. I really was a throwback. Great view. should be used more.
April 16, 200718 yr I've never been to that one, but I have been to the top of the Vernon Manor hotel. They have a rooftop deck with a bar/party room. Great view. I live in Cleveland but travel to Cinci and stay at the hotel a lot.
April 16, 200718 yr When the Emery's sold the old Terrace Plaza Hotel to Hilton, they donated a Joan Miro mural and a Calder mobile (and a Saul Steinberg mural not on view) to the Cincinnati Art Museum. They were site specific pieces designed for the round Gourmet Room, the name of the hotel's original rooftop restaurant. (The Steinberg I believe was in a different dining room.) Those two pieces had been on loan but can now be viewed outside the museum's Cafe. Actually, part of my favorite things at the Museum.
April 16, 200718 yr ^ no kidding? interesting. maybe someone could put up a pic of this? or is there a historic one w/ the miro/calder up?
April 17, 200718 yr From cincinnativiews.net This is the Steinberg "Mural of Cincinnati" Don't see one of the Calder in its location just yet, just this:
April 17, 200718 yr Here's a link to an article/blog about when they were reinstalled. http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/art/2005/09/lewitt-mural-disappears-miro-mural.asp
April 17, 200718 yr Neato...I like that wall mural one (first image). Something should really be done with that locale, but hey with all of the recent news about clubs/bars/restaurants opening downtown and in that area...maybe this isn't too far off for something really cool!
April 17, 200718 yr ^ The Steinberg is fairly interesting too I think. If you look closely it depicts various Cincinnati buildings, structures and scenes such as the Tyler Davidson Fountain. Here is a portion of it up close: According to this article is is scheduled to be back on view at the Art Museum this year after restoration: http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/art/2005/11/murals-to-be-restored-at-art-museum.asp And according to the Art Museum website the Steinberg, "Illuminations" Exhibit, is July 20 to September 20: "Treat yourself to this exhibition of over one hundred drawings, collages, and sculptures by Saul Steinberg, one of the twentieth century’s most inventive and beloved artists. Saul Steinberg: Illuminations is the first major show of Steinberg’s art to reflect the range and scope of his creativity. With pieces from the 1930s through the 1990s, Illuminations includes both his work for fine art galleries as well as his world-famous cartoons, which appeared in the pages of The New Yorker magazine for decades. Always engaging, Saul Steinberg’s art is sure to amuse and stimulate visitors of all backgrounds." http://www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org/absolutenm/templates/ArtTempExhibitions.aspx?articleid=455&zoneid=66
April 17, 200718 yr Not to mention that they have a great rooftop patio that is overgrown with vines...but what a great city feeling. Some rehab and a bar on the outside coupled with some lights and could be an great asset to downtown
April 18, 200718 yr very googie era cool. even w/o the artwork, you can see its some great space and we know the views. time for a revival for sure.
April 18, 200718 yr At 1948, one of the very first postwar modernist skyscrapers in the US Contemporar to the Terrace...Pietro Belluschis Equitable Building in Portland (1948): ..& SOM's Lever House in NYC (1949-50) I knew about the Miro and Calder, but not about that Stienberg, which is a hoot! Actually this hotel should be landmarked as an pioneering example of Modernism in Ohio and the Midwest in general. And yeah, that restaurant and lounge on the top floor would be great if revived. I can see the place has can lighting, maybe on a dimmer. Imagine a piano bar or jazz combo, the lights dimmed, and the city spread before you out those big windows. Very 'cocktail'.
April 19, 200718 yr I can see the place has can lighting, maybe on a dimmer. Imagine a piano bar or jazz combo, the lights dimmed, and the city spread before you out those big windows. Very 'cocktail'. Well put! I couldn't agree more.
