I drove right by the crane this weekend on Euclid Ave.  From what I could tell, it is much bigger than the one we saw at the AD site.

Probably an illusion because the buildings around this crane are not as tall as around AD.  I believe both of the building are 11 storyish give or take.

Sorry, it was a grey day, but I love this shot.  You can see the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center being built on the right.  I like how the crane seems to be looming over the entire neighborhood.  They'll just use the same one to build all UH's projects, Uptown, MOCA, CIA, the lot!

 

I was thinking the same thing!  Rebuild the whole hood within the tower crane radius, lol.

That really does need to be saved.  Absolute tragedy if it comes down.  If the city still has any power at all over the clinic that demo must be stopped.  Seems like the building would be perfect for small startups, like the tech incubator in Youngstown.

^My wife graduated from OCPM in 2006, and she said one of the reasons the school decided not to renovate/expand the existing site was because there are significant structural issues with the building (she heard this from school admin). If this is indeed the case, what are you going to do? I love historic preservation, but there has to be a limit on what you can spend.

I got off the BRT Thursday night and noticed that the crane was positioned over Euclid.  I suppose the thinking is that if it collapses (see NYC, Miami), better to kill someone than damage the frame.

Long time viewer first time poster here.  I noticed today that the Case Medical Center Emergency room is starting to be framed out.  Here is the link to it on UH's website: http://www.uhhospitals.org/AboutUH/Vision2010/UHEmergencyDepartment/tabid/1346/Default.aspx  Along with the cancer center there will be a huge difference in this stretch of Euclid soon.  Also does anyone know exactly where the new hotel will be?  I have heard the corner of Euclid and Cornell but that is where the new cancer center is.

New University Hospitals cancer hospital looks good in preview tour: Vital Signs

A recent sneak peek inside Euclid Avenue's newest hospital building reveals that patients there are going to have some pretty spectacular views to go along with what we're sure is going to be pretty fine care.

 

Plain Dealer editors and reporters recently toured University Hospitals Case Medical Center's cancer hospital that's going up at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Cornell Drive.

 

The 375,000-square-foot, 120-bed hospital -- as yet unnamed -- will put all of UH's cancer services in a single location, concentrating departments and services that are spread out among numerous buildings at the hospital's main campus at University Circle.

 

Although the structure was topped out some months ago, much work remains to be done on the interior. The $250 million building is scheduled to open in spring 2011.

I think it's an ok design.  I wish it addressed Euclid better, and I wish it didn't cast off a horrible glare where the sun hits that curve.  Really, I walked by it the other day and was freakin' blinded.

I think that the design is prettily sinuous, but it does not connect well to Euclid. And the end that faces the street still looks like the back of an open hospital gown.

That's exactly how I feel.  It actually looks better than I expected from the rendering. But there are going to be some unhappy neighbors, drivers and pedestrians on sunny days. 

 

I'm guessing the ground floor of the Euclid end will be some windows, maybe a fire door, all behind a small, lamely landscaped strip (perhaps with some auto-centric UH signage), which is going to be disappointing.  It probably would not have cost very much to have thrown a bone to Euclid by tacking on a small one story retail or office pavilion that opened directly to the street.  Something like that might even have improved the planned garden space by further enclosing it and shielding it from Euclid traffic noise if it extended west of the tower portion.  I'm sure it would have made the architect shudder to interrupt the purity of the building mass by stapling something on the end like that, but well worth the sacrifice, IMHO.  And something like that can always be added later...

 

I am going to take the opposite viewpoint of this building.  I really like it.

 

I especially like the combination of curves and angles that this building has.  And being mostly glass enhances these elements.  I realize that it basically ignores Euclid, but it is situated along the side street.

 

I think the building makes a bold statement and is one of a very few buildings in Cleveland that is daring and different from the usual bland architecture.

Especially in that particular area (CMA, Severance Hall, CWRU Business school, etc) I do not think of Cleveland's architecture as "bland"..... but I get your point.  I like the design too.  Something different.

I just got back from Columbus.  It's mind boggling how attractive their new buildings are, especially compared to this.  Never thought I'd say it, but Columbus is heading in a far more urban direction than Cleveland is and we need to start looking south for inspiration.  Preferably before another one of these gets approved.  Glare... of course there's glare... it's a giant chunk of glass.  It's also gonna have birds ramming it all day.  What is so uplifting about ice cubes?  Quit building monuments to ice cubes.  We don't need a built environment here that says "cold."

 

Ill take that over the usual gray we seem to see so much of.  We see enough gray...

I've been to Columbus recently as well - and I've seen some attractive new buildings there, but I don't recall any of them being a cancer treatment center at a major regional hospital. If I'm wrong I'll happily admit it, but I'd like to see some examples.
