December 31, 201014 yr Although not saying much, it is probably the best looking parking garage on the UH campus (looks almost like an actual office building) which was necessary given its prominent location.
December 31, 201014 yr Yes, it does look like an office building. I didn't recognize it until I noticed the lower-left corner of the "unskinned" parking garage. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 1, 201114 yr Looks kinda cool for a parking garage. Much better than the garages Cleveland Clinic built on Carnegie.
January 13, 201114 yr I drove by that cancer building today, and the snow buildup at the bottom of that "swoop" completely covered the windows on the first floor, maybe higher. The above photos were taken pre-storm, and in the first two you can see a bit of snow built up at the lower lip of the swoop. Imagine 50x that much. I doubt UH planned on hiring crews to shovel their windows. But that's exactly what they're gonna need.
January 13, 201114 yr those have to be awesomely insulated windows if the heat from inside isnt enough to melt snow
January 13, 201114 yr Or UH is waiting until substantial completion to get hit with a gas bill that can melt snow
January 13, 201114 yr I have NEVER seen an exterior cladding of metal panels take so long on a building. That top level of the facade has been waiting for those panels for well over a year. Unbelievable.
January 13, 201114 yr I have NEVER seen an exterior cladding of metal panels take so long on a building. That top level of the facade has been waiting for those panels for well over a year. Unbelievable. Yeah, I don't know WTF is up with that. And all the heat over this way is steam, at least on Case's side. I would assume UH is the same :).
April 6, 201114 yr Steel just shot out of the ground today on the west lawn beside the main entrance ... very confused what this is. Something temporary??
April 6, 201114 yr ^Looks to be a tent for a grand opening ceremony. See the white canvas on the ground.
April 14, 201114 yr !!! University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center opens for tours this weekend Published: Thursday, April 14, 2011, 5:30 AM Updated: Thursday, April 14, 2011, 10:07 AM By Plain Dealer staff The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — The public will be able to get a peek inside the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Center won't open officially until early June, but some radiation oncology patients will be treated in the new hospital starting later this month. The 120-bed center -- with capacity for 30 more -- will be 10 stories. The $260 million project at UH's main campus on Euclid Avenue covers 375,000 square feet, tripling the space for cancer services currently at UH. Nine levels (including the lower level) will be dedicated to patient care. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2011/04/university_hospitals_seidman_c.html
April 14, 201114 yr A friend of mine -works for Marous- has been designing the window blinds for this "CER Center" lol. As you might imagine, it hasn't been easy because of the curvy-ness. I like this building. The company is taking a lot of pride in this one! More letters!
April 18, 201114 yr Awesome pics! Thanks. I wondered what that huge tent was out front of UH this past weekend. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 18, 201114 yr Thanks for the photos, MayDay! From your visit, any sense how bad the glare/sun reflection will be from that shiny facade on pedestrians and drivers in the area?
April 19, 201114 yr Who cares? I mean is that what your really concerned about? If so don't walk or drive by? Unbelievalbe. Thanks for the photos, MayDay! From your visit, any sense how bad the glare/sun reflection will be from that shiny facade on pedestrians and drivers in the area?
April 19, 201114 yr Yeah, Straphanger, don't go to UC no more cuz you can't handle the glare! The glare actually is pretty bad, depending on the time of year, and time of day. sfbob, why shouldn't architects have to consider things like this? In Vegas, one curved glass building is actually burning people. I guess it's more important that it be iconic than that it doesn't burn people, huh? http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/10/01/us-lasvegas-deathray-idUSTRE6904AR20101001
April 19, 201114 yr I've heard some say that there's substantial glare on the western facade; I was there around 2:30pm so it wasn't an issue for me. That said... unless we're hearing stories of spontaneous combustion or daily pile-ups on Euclid, let's just leave it at that. :-) clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
April 19, 201114 yr Thanks, guys for the report. I'm not big fan of the design for other reasons too (YMMV), but was curious if Mr Shiny there might also make things uncomfortable for passersby in our hot, bright summers. Nothing a growing tree canopy can't handle though (unless it gets fried ;)). Looks like the healing garden is still just dirt, but suppose it's a bit early in the season for planting. I look forward to seeing that shape up. I can't quite tell from the photos- has anyone noticed about how tall the garden wall along Euclid is on the sidewalk side? Will the garden be easily visible from the sidewalk?
May 25, 201114 yr Rode by on my bike last night. The new front entrance to UH is looking nice. For whatever reason, the neon on the garage is showing up green in the picture, but it is actually blue.

May 25, 201114 yr I know it would have been cost prohibitive and probably a maintenance nightmare given our climate, but it would have spectacular scene if they could have done a double row of fountains from Euclid to the front door in that median.
June 5, 201114 yr Seidman Cancer Center is complete and OPENS today! UH Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland brings specialty services together in one place Published: Sunday, June 05, 2011, 5:15 AM Angela Townsend, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The final judge of University Hospitals' new Seidman Cancer Center, which opens today, will be the patients. But listen to the enthusiastic leadership and staff talk about the free-standing cancer hospital, and they seem to have addressed what matters most: "seamless delivery," "state-of-the-art technology" and "model of care." The hospital is poised, they say, to transform how care is delivered by providing the full scope of cancer treatment under one roof. "There's the feeling that when you walk through the door here, this is your space," Fred Rothstein, president of UH Case Medical Center, told a group touring the cancer hospital in early April. Added Dr. Julian Kim, a surgical oncologist and Seidman's chief medical officer, "Patients will have the ability to see multiple specialists, not only on the same day, but in the same room." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/06/uh_seidman_cancer_center_bring.html
June 9, 201114 yr It's look like the signage is not yet complete...even though the building is now officially opened:
June 9, 201114 yr I was struck with a completely unrelated thought viewing the above photo...Obviously something is going to have to been done with the back of those buildings fronting Euclid when the hotel is built on that surface lot, or guests arriving at the main entrace are going to have a lovely view of the dishwasher taking out the trash
August 11, 201113 yr Glad they have some evergreens there. Not only are they a nice windbreak, but they add some color in our gray winter months. Plus they can be decorated as Christmas trees during the holidays. :) "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
