Posted April 21, 200718 yr Hi, I am a single woman moving to Cleveland in a couple of months. A friend of mine who lives at Reserve Square recommended it for me. However, it seems there are some security issues in the place. I wouldn't want to get mugged or worse in their indoor garage. Does anyone live there? Can you throw more light on the security issues? I''d really love to live downtown cos it's close to work. And reserve square offers a good deal. Thanks.
April 21, 200718 yr Welcome! Let me suggest perusing this site: http://www.apartmentratings.com/rate/OH-Cleveland.html But I make that suggestion with the caution that people tend to speak up more when they're unhappy. Take the ratings with a grain of salt. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 21, 200718 yr I know a few people who live there, and they don't seem to mind it. Here's what I've observed: 1) Indoor garage seems safe. There is a security guard on every level and it doesnt have that bad of lighting. (plus a cool view of the city when you're drivng up the ramp haha) 2) Overall. they do have security guards around the area and I didn't for once feel it was an unsafe place to live. I know they also have a grocery store (which they will be expanding to street access everyone in the next year!), swimming pool, close to the lake and theater district, bar, and other little restaruants around the area. Also, Where are you coming from? Have you looked around downtown as well?
April 21, 200718 yr I've never heard anyone complain about security at RS. A few years back when I was fresh out of college, I used to work at a coffee shop at RS. I'd show up at 6am and I never remember feeling unsafe. I also know that a lot of single foreign female students live there. Have you looked at any other places in downtown?
April 21, 200718 yr I also know that a lot of single foreign female students live there. Oh yeah? "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 21, 200718 yr ^yeah, Price has financed all his developments with his lucrative mail order bride business earnings. ;)
April 22, 200718 yr I can't speak to Reserve Square, but I live right up the block in the Statler Arms and safety has never been an issue. I can't remember the name of the building, but a block or two east gets a bit rough but it's pretty easy to avoid. murray hill, do you have any more info on the grocery store renovation? I keep hearing rumors but nothing detailed. I think it's kind of dumpy now, I'm REALLY hoping it's a decent upgrade.

All I know is that it will be on the E. 13th side and I had heard within the next year for completion (but it sounded like sooner). It's apparently supposed to cater to the Phase III residents of the Avenue District as well.
April 22, 200718 yr I can't remember the name of the building, but a block or two east gets a bit rough but it's pretty easy to avoid. Is that because of the Greyhound station?
April 22, 200718 yr ^ no there is some low income housing tower catty corner from the 'hound station, near reserve square, but the shenanigans seem to be pretty concentrated around the building. i cant think of the name now... I think it is 13th and chester sw corner. We checked out reserve square when we were looking at between purchase housing (which we never needed) it seemed fine, a little dated (this was over 2 years ago though) I would feel very safe although I would avoid the hound station area and the aforementioned building on chester. If K&D has the level of security mentioned, you could probably put the security guys cell # on your cell and have them walk you in the building if you feel the need. Ask the manager about it.
April 22, 200718 yr The building at 13th and Chester is Parkview Apartments and Crains said back in May it will undergo an upgrade similar to Winton Manor (Prospect and East 9th).
April 22, 200718 yr The expanded street access of the grocery store will completed by the end of this year according to a manager in the store. It doesn't have an outdated feel by any means...maybe it has recently been redone?
April 23, 200718 yr ^ Great, thank you for the info! I'll have to check it out again, the last time I was there was maybe 4 or 5 months ago.
April 23, 200718 yr It doesn't have an outdated feel by any means...maybe it has recently been redone? Reserve Square was renovated last year. I think it is definitely much nicer than it used to be
May 18, 200718 yr Security wise, Reserve Square is near the tops in Cleveland, they always have a security guard at the entrance to the elevators, you can only get to the elevators through the lobby unless you're a resident. Also, as far as the parking garage is concerned. It's a parking garage that is staffed at the booth 24/7, there are residents coming and going regularly, so I don't see how it is any less safe then parking elsewhere?
May 20, 200718 yr Long-term living at Reserve Square is like using AOL as your internet provider...it's for those who don't know any better. You're short-term so it would be OK. Some people aren't comfortable with the nearby Greyhound depot passengers who use the Square's grocery store, and the store itself is a little beat up, and the cashier's sure as sh*t aren't going to set any speed records...but they do have a guard in the lobby, there's always plenty of people around, and I've never heard of any of the Greyhound passengers causing any problems. Most of that seems to come from the Reserve Square residents themselves (false fire alarms and no sense of ownership in the surroundings).
August 19, 200816 yr This morning there was a fire on the 13th floor and a man tragically died as a result. Early indications are that he left food on to cook and fell asleep. IIRC sprinklers are only found in certain areas of the building, does anyone know if this is common? As a residential apartment building, shouldn't there be some kind of law that mandates sprinklers within each unit? Or was this building old enough that it was grandfathered in, predating any sort of legislation? Here is the article from cleveland.com http://blog.cleveland.com/plaindealer/2008/08/clevealand_man_dies_in_downtow.html Cleveland man dies in downtown apartment fire Posted by Donna J. Miller August 19, 2008 08:01AM Categories: Breaking News Marvin Fong/The Plain DealerCleveland firefighters responded to an apartment fire on the 13th floor at Reserve Square early today. One man died. CLEVELAND -- A man died this morning in his apartment on the 13th floor of Reserve Square downtown, where a fire started about 6:15 a.m. Assistant Fire Chief Brent Collins said the fire started in the kitchen. It appeared that the man had been cooking and fell asleep in his bedroom, where firefighters found him, Collins said. "He tried to get out, but didn't make it," Collins said. The building was evacuated and no one else was injured, but a broken pipe flooded the WOIO Channel 19 offices, knocking them off the air for a short time. The man's name won't be released until his family is notified.
August 19, 200816 yr Definitely a horrible tragedy but why would you put food on to cook and then go to sleep?
November 19, 200816 yr Case Western law student sues Reserve Square, claiming bedbugs infested apartment Posted by James F. McCarty/Plain Dealer Reporter November 18, 2008 21:26PM Categories: Real Time News A law student has sued one of downtown Cleveland's chicer high-rises, contending that bedbugs drove him from two apartments -- and flying gnats from a third. In his lawsuit, Joshua Bobrowsky said the blood-sucking vermin in three Reserve Square apartments left him with painful welts and months of psychological and emotional distress. He seeks $142,000 in damages. Post edited 9-4-09 to comply with terms of use http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/11/case_western_law_student_sues.html
November 19, 200816 yr Reserve Square is like a couple other residences in downtown that have the fortunate luck to be located directly next to a project. There is a "good side" to the building, and a "bad side" to the building. Miraculously the derelects that hang out on the bad side are usually to lazy to wander over to the good side... And I'd like to take a bulldozer to that greyhound station. One of the biggest problems downtown.
November 19, 200816 yr And I'd like to take a bulldozer to that greyhound station. One of the biggest problems downtown. You can't bulldoze that building. Remove the people and have a plan to clean up the area.
November 19, 200816 yr It's essentially a shelter in the middle of a giant surface lot anyway, in way too developable an area... i'd still like to bulldoze it. I'd also like to win the megamillions and buy Winton Manor and the Parkview. Those buildings are way too large for section 8. It just puts way too many thugs out in their areas... And yes, I feel extremely bad for the many decent citizens that live in those buildings and A. have to put up with all the crap, and B. get a bad name, because they live in the same building with so many worthless human beings. And why CMHA doesn't do a better job of screening tennants I will never know.
November 19, 200816 yr Yeah, that section of downtown will be stuck in neutral as long as there's so much concentrated distress there. Maybe the Greyhound station can be repurposed as a retaurant, with some new construction filling in the rest of the lot.

Maybe the Greyhound station can be repurposed as a retaurant, with some new construction filling in the rest of the lot. The people walking around there don't bother me so much anymore since I live right there. They're generally harmless.... Generally.... What does bother me is when I'm trying to go home and I get stuck behind people parked in one of the DRIVING lanes of Chester to pick up Greyhound passengers!!!!!! Drives me nuts! If I drove a semi, I would ram right into them.
November 19, 200816 yr I used to walk past the Greyhound station going to my internship during grad school and it was like a convention for crazy homeless people.. the rentacops they have outside don't do too much either.
November 24, 200816 yr If the scenery never changes in a given location, you tend to get so used to it that you don't see it anymore. I doubt the goldfish notices their water anymore than Greyhound rent-a-cops notice zany homeless people.
