Posted April 22, 200718 yr Hi. I've lurked as a guest here for quite a while, and always told myself that I'd join and show off Wooster, Ohio as soon as I got a digital camera. Well, that day came, and so I'm pleased to show off Wooster to you. We'll start with the courthouse, and the square. This is the only picture the courthouse you'll see for now, the others didn't turn out very well. Besides, I'm sure it's already been covered pretty well The following are in other parts of downtown, or just off of the square, like this picture of the back of Everything Rubbermaid. The Post Office looks cold from this angle... ...but it's actually a fairly inviting place. I'm taking up a ton of space, so I'll conclude for now with this picture: Hope you enjoyed. :-)
April 22, 200718 yr Thanks very much! I've never made it to Wooster, but I've always found it impressive. Looks like there are some rehabs going on as well! Please keep them coming!
April 22, 200718 yr I used to live right across the street from that church in your last photo... I preferred the Friendtique building when it was blue as opposed to its current cream state GO GENERALS!
April 22, 200718 yr I used to live right across the street from that church in your last photo... I preferred the Friendtique building when it was blue as opposed to its current cream state GO GENERALS! That's awesome! It's such a cool church...maybe I'll put together something with all the older churches sometime. Regarding the construction and the Friendtique building, I'll reserve judgment until the building is finished. Blue did have a lot of character, and I don't want to see Wooster become cookie-cutter... We do have a lot going on. Here's a few more pictures. The first is being renovated, and the second, is according to today's Daily Record, soon going to be renovated. The last one is sort of an act of civil disobedience, as the sign posted said "no photography" (it's our new public library).
April 22, 200718 yr wow... that new library is massive... certainly beats the old one... what is Wooster doing with the old library after the new one is complete?
April 22, 200718 yr Darn, I should have gotten a picture of it. But to answer your question, it's some 60's looking building. Really neat looking, but too small. I think it's supposed to house county records or something after the move is completed. EDIT: Here's a nice one from the Cleveland Public Library website: http://cpl.org/images/clevnet/wayneA.jpg
April 22, 200718 yr I used to go to that library quite frequently... it's so convenient being right next to Buehler's market
April 22, 200718 yr I am looking at a book that says Wooster had a Carnegie Library? Please don't tell me they tore it down in the 60's!
April 22, 200718 yr I'm pretty sure that the Board of Education building was the library, but don't hold me to that.
April 23, 200718 yr Found the libraries website....http://www.wayne.lib.oh.us/LibraryHistory.asp Wooster tore down their beautiful Carnegie and built on the same site. :-(
April 23, 200718 yr I don't care for the North End... as I always preferred Downtown... but I heard Wooster got a Starbucks? I'm sure it can't compare to Seattle's downtown.... one of the coolest coffeeshops I've ever been to.
April 23, 200718 yr ^Looks like the old post office to me...reminds me of similar post office designs in other towns. Glad to see it still standing!!!
April 23, 200718 yr Here's some more...food for viewing. "Freedlander's: It Pays to Buy Quality!" Gosh, even when I was a kid (which wasn't that long ago) and my Mom would take me downtown, this place would be packed. Now it's down to one story of actual retail... Yes, this was the old jail. ...with the new justice center across the street. School District building. I thought this looked cool. Masonic Temple. The lineup of courthouse + temple+ school board is really impressive.
April 23, 200718 yr I don't care for the North End... as I always preferred Downtown... but I heard Wooster got a Starbucks? I'm sure it can't compare to Seattle's downtown.... one of the coolest coffeeshops I've ever been to. Indeed, it opened in December. They've done really well, and I don't think it's hurt business too much, since Seattle's usually gets the college crowd, and on days when appetizers aren't 1/2 at CW's, the high school crowd.
April 23, 200718 yr I never made it to Freedlander's regrettably... I loved that used bookstore... and the Olde Jaol was a fun place to hang out

April 23, 200718 yr More pictures coming, as soon as I resize and stuff. I warn you, however, they won't be as high-quality as the others, the weather wasn't on my side today. :-P
April 23, 200718 yr Well, here's some of it. "Skyline." I drove all the way out to the Bob Evans to get this picture, you better like it. There's more Churches coming soon...and city hall.
April 24, 200718 yr The rest. This pretty much finishes up downtown, the College/College Hills area will be next. If I think of anything else downtown to add, you can be sure I will. :-) That house, here and in the last post, is actually a monastery. They exist, but apparently aren't "sanctioned" by the church. Funeral home across the street. Nursing home. That last church was founded in 1812, I believe the building was built then, as well. Aside from that house, many of the houses in downtown Wooster are now offices. City Hall! And finally, my former stomping grounds, the former Wooster High School, converted to Cornerstone Elementary School in 1996. It's far more impressive than I could ever show it to be.
