March 11, 200718 yr Put the damn parking lot in back, for godness sakes! OK Ratner's boys, listen up! We are the true future URBAN PIONEERS of NE Ohio and we demand you put that parking in back! It's 2007 and the urban design needs to be politely respected for future generations!
March 11, 200718 yr ^Its Lakewood. I don't think it really qualifies as 'urban pioneering'. Still, a small plaza surounded by pavement on all four sides is not quaint.
March 13, 200718 yr ^Its Lakewood. I don't think it really qualifies as 'urban pioneering'. Still, a small plaza surounded by pavement on all four sides is not quaint. Why don't you think Lakewood is an urban pioneers dreamland?
March 13, 200718 yr Why don't you think Lakewood is an urban pioneers dreamland? How would one be considered an urban pioneer if they moved into Lakewood?
March 14, 200718 yr If you lived in Pepper Pike... I heard someone from Pepper Pike pity the people in Parma for living in small, closely spaced homes with no swimming pools. Everyone has their own point of reference, I guess. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 14, 200718 yr I noticed another SOLD sign up on a unit in RS on Hopkins...i believe that was the last one of those.
March 14, 200718 yr It's my second post here, so please be gentle...I am not a planner but my friends are planners so I just kind of picked up an interest in it. And I live in Lakewood, right around the corner from Rosewood place and I must say that has turned out wonderful, the renovations on the existing building worked great with the new construction. Does anybody know if there tenants lined up to move into the groundfloor retail?
March 22, 200718 yr i like how the intersection of Madison and Warren is shaping up. from a gas station and a half empty suburban type plaza to a new sherwin williams and walgreens built right up to the corners of the intersection. looks good now we jus need to get rid of the BP station.
March 23, 200718 yr Too bad they couldn't have done that at West 117th and Madison, across the street from the highest-density mode of transportation in town. Welcome CBC! Glad to have you aboard! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
March 23, 200718 yr i agree...i dont understand whats going on over there...a huge opportunity missed with the DeLorean site....that project really pisses me off.
March 24, 200718 yr I agree an Aldi's does not do much for me personally. West 117th is a mess, like neither Cleveland nor Lakewood want anything to do with it.
March 25, 200718 yr This intersection has/had so much potential....If the DeLorean site could've been put together with the subway/beer store, deli, and BK you'd have a nice piece of land to do a TOD. The new RTA station and the existing Highland block across the street would've made this as close a vibrant 24/7 location as there is on the west side; I believe it would've done a lot to help increase ridership and maybe inspire other TOD's along the line. So much opportunity squandered. A damn shame indeed.
March 25, 200718 yr Please join Councilman Ryan Patrick Demro for an exciting announcement and message at a: Community Rally for Lakewood’s Future Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 1:05pm The United Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Social Hall1385 Andrews Avenue (Detroit & Andrews)Lakewood, Ohio 44107 Councilman Demro will be joined by State Representative Josh Mandel (OH-17) in delivering an activating and inspiring message about the future of Lakewood. March 26, 200718 yr Hmm, I wonder if this is the 'big news' that one of the planning department workers told me about. But probably not.
March 26, 200718 yr i have no idea. that's all that was told to me by a rep from the planning department. What means 'big' to one official may not be the same for the public.
March 26, 200718 yr now that work has started on the rebuilding of detroit ave. does anyone have any knowledge of the parts of the Main Street program that were implemented. i know this project was pushed back because of this program.
April 2, 200718 yr work today has started on the next phase of Rockport Square. i wonder if sam miller's comments about forest city not doing shit in this area last week have anything to do with it. im excited
April 3, 200718 yr ^I drove by on Saturday and wondered when they would start the next phase What location are they building on now?
April 4, 200718 yr ^That sounds like the second townhome site I believe. I think the loft building is finally supposed to start soon too. I was told May a month or two ago.
April 4, 200718 yr i think youre right. i would love to see that loft building go up. it will change the whole feel of the neighborhood.
June 8, 200718 yr the foundations for the first three townhomes for the next phase have been set and the concrete pads were poured yesterday. i talked to a worker who said once the framing is done on the townhomes theyre supposed to start construction of the six story loft building.
June 9, 200718 yr I've noticed the increased activity lately. Good to see. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 13, 200718 yr 10 Amish guys were there today framing the townhomes. I really dislike those guys. :shoot:
June 13, 200718 yr 10 Amish guys were there today framing the townhomes. I really dislike those guys. :shoot: Why?
June 14, 200718 yr 10 Amish guys were there today framing the townhomes. I really dislike those guys. :shoot: are you a union carpenter?
June 14, 200718 yr Bingo. As a home-owning, tax-paying, involved citizen in the community who lives right up the street from this development, it just warms my heart to see people who don't live in the community, don't pay taxes, and undercut honest contractors and tradesmen continually get this kind of work in urban areas. I've spent most of the last 3 mos. unemployed while these people get vanned in from Geauga county and work for $8/hr cash under the table or they get 1099'd by the builder. You tell me who benefits from this? Not me, and not the city, either. I could go on and on, but I won't. :x
June 14, 200718 yr Yup. I dont respect builders who want us to pay big money for housing when they wont pay people good wages.
June 14, 200718 yr Forest City is doing this project. typical. snub the local taxpayers for their own well being.
August 3, 200717 yr Hi folks. I'm a homeowner just up the street from this development. I'm told the south loft building should be starting in the fall, which means they'll clear the lot and let it sit all winter :-D As for the parking between the small park and the north loft - my understanding was that would be visitor/retail parking. The resident parking will be behind the building in an enclosed lot. The "Annette" building adjacent to the north property was in negotiation to be purchased and turned into a cafe with outdoor seating. The owner was holding out for a better deal, as I understand it. A recent fire damaged the building - I wonder how that affected the deal. The first-floor retail in the loft buildings won't allow for food prep, so the restaurants and bars in the neighborhood don't have a lot to worry about. I'm hoping for more neighborhood amenity-type businesses, such as a dry cleaner/tailor or something else that isn't duplicated elsewhere in the neighborhood.
August 7, 200717 yr Welcome Spamhead! I live on Winchester and today I noticed a large increase in trucks parked on the site of the south loft bldg. Looks to me they're seriously prepping the site for some diggin soon. I'm very anxious to see how this part of the project turns out. Also noticed a "sold" sign on the northernmost townhome on ridgewood; couldn't see if there were any others.
September 1, 200717 yr I stopped by the site of the Cliffs project last weekend, just getting a chance to post the photos. Since I've never visited the site before, I don't know if it's been sitting like this for some time, or if they are getting started.
September 1, 200717 yr It's pretty much getting started. They've been demolishing structures one at a time. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 6, 200717 yr Back to Rockport Square; all 3 townhomes on Ridgewood are sold and nearing completion. I could see the foundations of the homes to be built on Detroit are staked out. Gonna be some more diggin soon.
September 10, 200717 yr I've been scouting for apartments (I'm 90% sure I'll be a Lakewood resident in a couple weeks!) and noticed last week that Rockport Square looks very nice and much further along than I expected
September 12, 200717 yr Related Lakewood Development, they have started roughing in the storefronts in Rosewood place (studs and elecrical) and from the banner on the side of the building they look to have leases on 4 out of the 6 retail spaces. No more lofts left for sale but it looks like the townhomes are not moving that well, probably related to the whole mortage industry and fiasco.
September 19, 200717 yr The footer trenches for the next 2 townhomes at Rockport square have been dug. Expect more soon.
September 25, 200717 yr Finally! Too bad I'm moving out of Lakewood and won' be here for the much-awaited loft midrises.
September 25, 200717 yr Finally! Too bad I'm moving out of Lakewood and won' be here for the much-awaited loft midrises. I thought that you just bought a house in Lakewood?

October 4, 200717 yr Developer wants to remake Lakewood park Posted by Molly Kavanaugh October 03, 2007 20:30PM A company wants to develop Kauffman Park in Lakewood and an adjoining strip mall into shops, offices and possibly condos, though details are sketchy. more at: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/10/developer_wants_to_remake_lake.html
October 5, 200717 yr While losing a park is never good, I will be happy if they tear down and redevelop that crappy strip mall.
October 5, 200717 yr ^because the park is well hidden from the street, there is a lot of illegal activity that goes on over there. The police are very much in favor of this plan.
October 5, 200717 yr While losing a park is never good, I will be happy if they tear down and redevelop that crappy strip mall. I'm not so sure. I thought I saw an article on this earlier that indicated that they were going to build essentially a new strip mall pushed back further from the street. This would be a serious retrograde movement for Detroit Ave, which has been re-urbanizing with Rockport Square and Rosewood Place, so I hope it doesn't happen that way.
