Nice infill building project on the west end. I believe this’ll be one of the dispensaries.

Yes it will.  You can get your teeth worked on at WS Family Dental, pick up your painkillers next door, then hop on over for some Harry Buffalo wings.

Plus blackbird bakery and insomnia cookies are nearby if you should get a craving.

^ I crushed an entire box of Blackbird pastry's yesterday.....SO.damn.good!

Anyone remember when a certain mayor wanted to bulldoze the entire area? Very glad that did not happen.

I think there is some redevelopment that can happen there but it should be done parcel by parcel rather than wholesale demo.

A restaurant & bar called the Ohio Tavern will be going into the old Maria’s Roman Room on the east end.  Under construction currently.

About time that space got filled. It's been empty for something like 15 years. Maria's was a terrific restaurant. I hope its replacement will be at least as good.

Maria’s was my favorite restaurant on the west side when I first moved to Lakewood 18 years ago. Their white clam sauce linguine is unmatched to this day.

Also feel this this is a direct result of the now completed Rockport development and its positive effect on the neighborhood. Was amazing to see how fast those all sold.

Also noticed a few storefront renovations going on across the street. Not sure what’s going on there atm.

Lakewood promoting bicycle use with brand-new corrals on Detroit and Madison avenues

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Lakewood continues to make good on its 2011 cycling master plan with various infrastructure additions and improvements coming to the community. The latest of which is the revamped bicycle corral -- new rack, fresh paint and added delineators -- on Detroit Avenue.

Lakewood's East End gets some refreshments

Several properties at Lakewood's East End have changed hands recently, resulting in new investments that are due to turn underutilized structures into productive buildings once again.

The latest and largest transaction occurred Oct. 16 when Jim Miketo, owner of Forest City Shuffleboard in Ohio City, acquired a three-story, 101-year-old, mixed-use building at 12501 Madison Ave., county records show. It recently hosted the Madison Bi-Rite grocery store and Silhouette School of Dance.

Love this! That BiRite building is the cornerstone of Birdtown. Ive always felt Birdtown could be like a little Tremont. There’s so many old storefronts/former bars waiting to be rediscovered in that neighborhood, especially along Plover. And what’s Fairbairn doing with Birdtown Brewery? Too many other projects taken priority?

Yeah I think he's been focusing more on the Barrio expansion - I think he's announced or opened 5 since the original announcement of Birdtown Brewery.  I have spoken with him in the last year and he said that it's still alive and well.  I will ask for an update next time i see him.

Great scoop @KJP! Miketo did a great job with the Shuffleboard Club. I can't wait to see this come alive and add to the Birdtown Neighborhood.

It would be nice to have a small grocery there. Someone mentioned a clothing store could be the tenant. I could see a destination like CLE Clothing or the like.

Also, it's always so painful to read FB comments on anything going on in Lakewood. So many people complaining about parking and traffic...lol. I wish they could all be relocated to [insert car-centric outer ring suburb here]

It’s such a big space. Could easily be subdivided into 2-3 storefronts.

Hi everyone, I am moving back to Cleveland after 10 years in Columbus and just purchased my first home in Lakewood. Just west of Detroit and W117. Wanted to know everyone's thoughts on the housing market and that area of Lakewood specifically. I feel that it has upside but friends and family in the area seem to think otherwise. Any thoughts on this is helpful!

All of Lakewood has been seeing increasing pricing. I don't think any part of Lakewood is bad at all. If you feel comfortable sharing, what street did you but on?

Welcome back!

I'm not in the market, but have some real estate agent friends who think Lakewood continues to be a hot market.   If you're just west of W117th/Detroit, you must be around the new townhomes?   Did you purchase one of those, or an existing older home on a side street?

Longtime Lakewood folks seem to love denigrating the east side of town. It's completely undeserved. I'm a little biased, sure, but my view is that any house in Lakewood is a wise investment.

I lived on the east end the first 9 years in Lakewood. Never had a problem, had awesome neighbors on Winchester. Moved a little further to Elbur for 4 years, same. Great street, great neighbors. Moved west of Bunts for the first time in 2014, got my car stolen in the first month lol

Another cool addition to the East End. Hola Tacos ?

More Madison Ave development east of Bunts. Love how they transformed this formerly windowless, closed off building.

Trinity Church Block redevelopment plan picked. Wish we could’ve seen the other proposals. This is pretty underwhelming. It essentially adds just 10 apartments. No details on the church reuse. I’m also not aware of Scalish having much experience outside of some old home renovations and some storefront reno’s.

I was hoping Lakewood would push for a boutique hotel, since they controlled the site. It’s sorely needed.

Edited by marty15

It's not exciting, but it is some good solid adaptive reuse of a historic church and ancillary buildings, with a bit of solid infill.  No home run, but this is the type of solid base hitting that is needed to continually renew an urban neighborhood.

There is a good chance you will get your wish for a boutique hotel at a different site in Lakewood.

Does anyone know how they'll handle the noise issue from the food truck generators? In my experience they're usually pretty loud.

Good question. I wonder if the food truck park will have electrical hookups or if that's even possible

I’m guessing they’ll have hookups like an RV park. I’ll ask.

I hate speedbumps as most cities that install them don't know what they're doing, as they force drivers to violate the speed limit. I haven't seen these in Lakewood yet, but can go over them at 25mph without hurting your car?

The Days Inn, 12019 Lake Ave., is for sale and a candidate for redevelopment. Might be a little less cheaper to buy now after a fire last night at 11:30 pm. I overhead one of the firefighters say that everyone got out safely. But it's going to be closed for a while.  Looks like they're still open!

I'm just bummed it isn't called the "BirdRite" building:

Revitalization of Lakewood’s Birdtown district continues with redevelopment of former BiRite building

Updated 9:38 AM;Today 9:06 AM

By Jordyn Grzelewski, The Plain Dealer

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — A new plan to redevelop the former BiRite building on Madison Avenue will be a step forward in what city officials, local business owners and real-estate brokers say is a wave of reinvestment in this city’s historic Birdtown neighborhood.

The building at 12501 Madison Ave. recently sold to an investor group tied to local business owner and real-estate developer Jim Miketo. Miketo’s group — called Neighborhood Drummer, after a line in a Bruce Springsteen song — plans to convert the vacant building into apartments and first-floor retail.

Miketo’s group envisions between 16 and 20 residential units on top of 9,000 square feet of retail space, though what type of retail is still being determined. The apartments will be market rate, renting at between $1.25 and $1.50 per square foot.

The developer plans to add a 1,500-square-foot fitness center, as well as a rooftop deck with views of Lake Erie and downtown Cleveland.
