This is mostly for Clevelanders, but anyone is welcome to respond.

A week ago, I was shocked when I brought up to my friend from Euclid about the old Arcade.  It finally came up "yeah, I know what you're talking about."  Wait, you know what I'm talking about??.....well, have you ever been there??  "No, but I'm pretty sure I know where it is."  This kid has lived in Euclid all his life, and only "knows what I'm talking about."  Damn.

So this brings up my curiousity: Is this is a suburbs mentality or a Cleveland mentality or both?

Please fill out how many of these random places you've personally walked (and not know about or even walked past).  Again, this is just a random list, since I know I'm leaving out a lot more the city has to offer.  At the very least, I hope this can give people some ideas and brainstorm for what else the city has to offer:

This is a really good discussion thread. I've had so many similarly frustrating experiences with people in the area who have done hardly any of these things, but complain there's nothing exciting or interesting to do. Why people don't make an effort to enjoy the region, I don't know. My guess is that their preconceived notions about the city inhibit them from exploring/enjoying; they think there's nothing of value in Cleveland so they don't bother venturing out. Its a real shame - and I've been trying to communicate this with my peers.

Wow! Not even to go out to eat? I don't mean to embarrass you. I just find it interesting. You might be the only person posting on this forum who will respond 'No' to these categories.

He lives in DC.

I'll correct myself....I'm a yes for W. 6th although it was 10 years ago. I forgot. When I go to C-land now I go with my kid in tow, so I'm more apt to hit the zoo or a museum.

The things I have not done have been mainly due to my choice of where to spend my $

Sports is not one one of them. The only times I have gone to the Jake have been because tickets were given to me.

Does the CMJ Fest count anymore since it has been discontinued?

Woollybear,

How old are you?  A lot of these things are very diverse...also, where do you currently live?

The things I have not doe have been mainly due to my choice of where to spend my $

Sports is not one one of them. The only tines I have gone to the Jake was because tickets were given to me.

Does the CMJ Fest count anymore since it has been discontinued?

What?!? Why??  I seriously thought they were making a lot of money off this.  Most of the people I talked with were out-of-towners, tourists, and most of the concerts were full/sold-out.

My adds:

13) Glenville Festival- Yes

14) Buckeye Festival- Yes

15) East 185th street festival- Yes, but they messed it up this past year.

16) Festival ot Luke Easter Park-  Yes

14) Any Cleveland pro hockey game - YES (Lumberjacks)

15) Any Cleveland pro soccer game - YES (Crunch, Force)

16) Any Case sporting event - NO!

I love the additions.  Honestly, the ones I left off that irk me the most were:

35) Chinatown/Asian plaza (preferbly lunch or dinner) -

EVENTS:

13) Taste of Cleveland! -

I still feel like I'm leaving out a big event or location (other random thoughts: Music concert downtown, sailing/jet skiiing on Lake Erie, CSU event, Hot Sauce Williams.., and Lake Erie Monsters Hockey coming soon.)

Cleveland is also in the running for an MLS expansion team (professional soccer) for 2009.

I recently moved south, and seeing stuff like this makes me miss Cleveland so much. I lived on the west bank of the flats, and I feel like I did not do enough of this stuff while I was there.

I will say that I did appreciate it all while I was in Cleveland, but I appreciate it even more being away. I hate hearing people back home :weird: complain that there is nothing to do...come to the south!

The Old Stone Church is now offering free lunchtime music for the public again from 12-1 mon-tues-thurs.

Soaring chords at Old Stone

Friday, May 04, 2007

Brian Albrecht

Plain Dealer Reporter

In the roar of buses and screeching gulls, the faint sound of a pipe organ drifts like the aroma of musical pizza through the lunchtime smorgasbord of noise on Public Square.

The sound wafts through the open doors of Old Stone Church in notes that tumble and swirl in whirlpools of melody, and massive gut-stomping chords from the 3,000-plus pipes of a Cleveland-built Holtkamp organ.

For the next 3½ months, Bill Shaffer, the church's music director, will sit at the base of those gold-hued, red-striped pipes that stand like a tight pack of giant pencils, and play whatever music matches the midday mood.

Anything and everything that Shaffer can coax from 144 keys and 32 pedals will be featured, from Bach to Mariah Carey. When the In- dians are in town, he might take a swing at "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." And for Buckeye fans, "Hang on Sloopy."

The free recitals started Monday and will be held from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in Old Stone's Open Door program, which invites people to visit for a little lunch-hour reflection, prayer or a spirited theme from "Star Wars." (May the pipes be with you.)

One goal of the musical program, now in its second year, is to show that the church "is not just a museum, that we're becoming more involved in downtown Cleveland," said Shaffer, 31, of Seven Hills. "Call it the hidden gem trying not to stay hidden."

The most common comment he hears from people who venture into the oldest structure on Public Square - the church was built in 1855 - is that they've lived in Cleveland for many years but never visited Old Stone's cavernous confines of soaring wood beams and Tiffany stained-glass windows.

So he sends out a musical invitation in song selections that can vary according to who walks in.

"If there's a crowd, I tend to do some of the more showy or festive pieces," he said. "If people are meditating, I'll keep it subdued so it adds to the mood, as opposed to jarring them out of their seats."

He could. The jarring part. Set the organ for sfzorzando (suddenly loud), when the full power of the pipes are brought to bear, open throttle, and a little red warning light glows on the console. You can feel the rumble.

After one air-thumping demonstration, a visitor from California asked the organist, "Does that give you a feeling of power?"

Shaffer grinned. "Every once in a while, yeah," he said.

The organ also can move you in other ways. Those too young to remember when pianos and organs provided the musical score for silent movies can experience much the same effect by sitting in the church's "sweet spot," Row 77 center, where the acoustics are best.

Sit back, close your eyes and let the music conjure invisible moods of drama, suspense, horror, victory and beauty.

It's the soundtrack of your imagination

ooh, i like the idea. Its on my calendar now

  • 2 months later...

bump for the new transplants.  I hope this gives them ideas of places to see/explore now that they are new to Cleveland.

Thanks for bumping it, because I missed that article about the Old Stone Church. I gotta go there!!

^I'm not sure but they still might be doing their lunch time music programming still....
