Posted April 30, 200718 yr South Side is probably the city's most exciting neighborhood... located on the south side of the Monongahela River with quick access to Oakland and Downtown. It features a thriving business district of almost 20 blocks. After crossing the Hot Metal Bridge from Oakland... my first destination was the South Side Works... which is a brownfield redevelopment of a former steel mill site. It is a mixed-use development featuring retail, office, residential. While it is generally in the template of the "lifestyle center" that is taking the country by storm... I like it because SSW is actually integrated within an urban neighborhood as opposed to being in the middle of nowhere... and I think the architecture is generally of high quality and fits in with the context of the neighborhood. It certainly has brought the eastern end of E. Carson St. to life. a young lady enjoying wine and tapas in the sun the cheesy architecture of the Cheesecake Factory contrasts with the retro-deco of the movie theatre tucked away in the middle of the residential area... yum! typical South Side housing example of some of the newer construction alley housing an old gas station was converted to a restaurant with generous al fresco dining a couple months ago an old catholic school goes condo what the??? work beginning on Riverside Mews... a 48 townhome project near the river South Side Court an old glass factory goes residential what a strange house there is significant commercial scattered throughout the side streets of the South Side... which is a quality I really like this handsome building has just been restored Polish school walking across the rooftops the church on the hill found new life as condos! an opportunity for one of you urban pioneers new apartment building City Theatre 10th St. Bridge ciao, South Side

April 30, 200718 yr Great pics!! The South Side is my favorite hood in Pittsburgh. I like to start the night at Jack's and end it at Tom's Diner.

April 30, 200718 yr No... neither go inside of a hamburger... kraut goes inside a dog... and fries (along with cole slaw) go inside a Primanti's sandwich... which usually consists of pastrami or corned beef or genoa salami or sardines or a bunch of other things... but not hamburger. The Primanti's tradition is certainly no weirder than Cincinnati Chili. Northeast Ohioans are quite familiar with the Primanti's sandwich... as regional chain Panini's borrowed the idea for their "overstuffed sandwiches". The Primanti sandwich:

May 3, 200718 yr Evergrey, wasn't trying to diss Pittsburghers, its just the way I like to bring up local culture in threads. I know chili over spaghetti is pretty far out there too..everyone at UC thinks its weird. You just have to grow up with stuff like that to fully appreciate it :] In Cincinnati they have a place called Martinos in Corryville, it's a Pittsburgh themed place on Short Vine and they have Pittsburgh food.
