Issue 4 narrowly passed. We're going to 4-year terms.

COAST and Smitherman are having a bad night, which pleases me to no end.

Nervous.  That puts extra emphasis on the next election.

I think automatically granting certain zoning relief where affordable units are provided is a good policy, but only allowing zoning relief for affordable housing is very dumb.

  • I don’t know why some people are acting like executive sessions are going to lead to Cincinnati City Council no longer having public meetings or doing all kinds of shady stuff.   Ohio state

I didn't think Issue 4 would pass. It sounds like the bizarre tie to the streetcar may have backfired.

^ I feel you, but I am developing confidence in the staying power of the city's progressive political coalition. The only sign against it is the fact that the streetcar's margin of victory narrowed between 2009 and 2011. Cincinnati seems to have reached a political turning point favoring progressive politics. Along those lines, HamCo seems to have adopted a blue hue (though doubtfully urbanist-progressive blue).

Well, COAST is at least. In fact, COAST is having a nightmarish, end-of-times night. Smitherman at least supported Obama. He won a steak dinner from Bill Cunningham due to an on-air bet on the presidential election, though I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I know that.

Hamilton County final numbers have been released. Issue 4, which had led by about 2,200 votes, ended up winning by more than 3,400 ballots, 65,104 (51.4 percent) to 61,652 (48.6 percent).

Local Access is on the budget chopping block. Wonder if Smitty will fight to get that money reinstated.

Dohoney's proposed budget cut funding for Media Bridges but keeps funding for airing city council meetings on public access. (Also, I thought Media Bridges received some of their funding from Time Warner Cable.)

I have no idea what's up with Media Bridges these days. They moved from their Race St. location to the WCET building a few months ago... was that done because they knew they wouldn't have the budget for their own facility? I also question how valuable public access TV, internet radio, and FM radio are in the world of YouTube, blogging, podcasting, and other methods for publishing your own content. I support public broadcasting but I have mixed feelings on public access.

I think it's valuable because it reaches those who aren't savvy internet users or do not have internet access. We're moving in the direction you suggested however. I wonder how much the city spends on Media Bridges - I have a feeling it's not a budget buster.

I agree, and that's why my feeling are somewhat mixed. For people who don't have access to cameras, microphones, editing software, or even computers in general, Media Bridges is a valuable tool. But it's expensive to operate a cable TV channel and FM radio station. Ideally, they would still be able to lend equipment, teach people how to use the tools (cameras, editing software, mixers, etc.), and increase their focus on teaching people how to craft a message. Anyone can produce content, but if you don't know how to effectively communicate (write well, be professional on the air, etc.), your message will be ignored.

Media Bridges lost some funding. TW? Something in their funding didn't last forever & ended recently.

As much as Smitherman & the the blackenomics guy use the facilities they should really pay something (and maybe they do)

That people on this forum don't use it to push some of the agendas proposed here truly baffles me.

I was going to bring my Explore Cincinnati radio show to Media Bridges' FM station. I ended up not doing it because my time slot would have been on a Sunday (when the Media Bridges facility is closed), so I would've had to record it in advance. Between the extra work and the fact that episodes would be almost a old when they aired, I gave up my time slot and decided to keep it as a podcast.

There's still a potion of the population that looks at the internet as illegitimate as compared to TV and radio. Since broadcast does take a significant monetary investment and at least semi-professional management team to curate the content, equipment and facilities, they may have a point. Any old nut can start a blog.

They took away our public access TV in Columbus almost a decade ago. We still have government TV and Educable. They say it had to do with funding, but the content was often controversial. Like this guy (NSFW):

Explore Cincinnati could definitely use some visuals. At least stills.

^^ LOL, I forgot about Damon Zex. Thanks for the reminder.

^ Yeah, especially with the lectures. Portions of those are frustrating to listen to, when the speaker is referring to something on a slide or whatever they are showing.

FWIW, Media Bridges is having an open house 12/7 @ 6PM

There are some bitter folks in Cbus about the closing of public access. I know the last exec. director.

The problem with public access is for all the TV people watch, put a camera in their hand and they can't make anything people want to watch.  I took a few video classes in college and it as absolutely startling to me the extent to which people have zero idea how to emulate what they see on TV every day.  Meanwhile, it seems like the people who operate on society's fringes, like the guy who made that nice film up in Columbus, can usually make something interesting.  I always wonder what it's like to be a couch potato, and what actually goes through their minds while watching TV.

I like some of the stuff on WVQC.

Damon Zex?

>Damon Zex?

It held my attention, unlike the ladies sitting on the couch.

Yeah, he's pretty amazing. LOL. I can see why they would want to get rid of him, though. He did some pretty crazy stuff like smoke drugs on the air and get his..err.."red wings".

I'm not surprised. If it was so easy, everybody would be doing it. I took some of the classes at Media Bridges & the staff really does try to teach this stuff.

In one class a lady borrowed a camera held it in front of her high school yearbook (on a table) & turned the pages with the hand not holding the camera. Not only was it horrible & nausea inducing, her classmates at her reunion LOVED it.

They should charge a membership fee.

Anyhoo:

City Bleat offers some details & clarity - something the MSM hasn't done and, as such, is good argument for Media Bridges.

http://www.citybeat.com/cincinnati/blog-4220-city_slashing_media_bridges_funding.html

He described dire circumstances in which Ohio originally cut funding to Media Bridges in June 2011, leaving the organization with $198,000 from remaining money in the state fund and $300,000 from Cincinnati’s general fund. The state fund was provided by Time Warner Cable, and lobbying from the cable company is what eventually led to the fund’s elimination.

Wow... so Time Warner already eliminated their funding last year.

What does anyone know about Greg Landsman? he is running for Council next year.

All I know is that he is in nonprofit work, was appointed by Strickland for some positions, and is endorsed by David Pepper. He lives in Mt. Washington, too.

I know he is a nice guy, bright, talented, and will raise a ton of money. Youngish-30s with a wife and two young kids. I hear good things about his work at Strive and he also owns like 10% of 1215 Wine/Coffee bar. He has a solid shot of making it on his first try.

I met him briefly at an event in Walnut Hills and he seems to be very passionate about the city. I get a good impression from him, but I know that some people can be a little different than they appear. Figured I would check UO to see if anyone else has any information.

He is going to be pretty similar to PG. he is close with Smitherman, "supports streetcars but has major concerns with the lack of transparency in the current plan", opposed to all new taxes, etc.

Last thing we need on council is somebody tight with that clown, Smitherman.

Where do you get that he is close with Smitherman? Talk to people about the work he has done at Strive, the work he did in the Strickland administration and get a clue. Or that he is "pretty similar to PG" and "opposed to all new taxes"? If that means he, along with the new generation of Democrats that include PG and Chris Seelbach, plans to be skeptical about new spending proposals until they are proven necessary and beneficial then I don't see that as a bad thing.

Not as bad as Dan Gilbert's Lebron James comic sans.

"we have one affirmative answer so far from Council Member Christopher Smitherman"

Listening to Smitherman vs. watching Smitherman is like Jekyll and Hyde.

On the radio, where the majority of listeners are outside of the city, he is always jovial and thanks callers for their question/comment (when he takes them).

During the public comment portion of the Budget & Finance committee meeting on 12/06, he looked either bored or pissed. We'll except for when a 12 year old boy spoke in favor of Media Bridges.

Smitherman vows to support funding for Media Bridges.

As much as he uses the facilities, it should be no surprise.

Dunno if the COA Ters & faux libertarians are lobbying for their show or not.

COAST has a public access show?

^well, the McRothenberg Group

Email blast from Media Bridges today:

Thanks to your phone calls, emails, meetings and speaking at public meetings, Cincinnati City Council's Budget & Finance Committee just passed a motion to fund Media Bridges in 2013 to the tune of $150,000.  The item will still have to pass the full Council tomorrow but since it passed the committee unanimously we can expect it pass.

What does this mean in terms of services for 2013?  I honestly can't tell you at this moment.  The plan we submitted called for $300,000 in operating funds plus $50,000 in capital funds to provide for new equipment that would allow for more automated services.

I will be working with the staff and board of trustees over the next days and weeks to try and find the best solutions that provide you with the most services.

It is important to note the Council has said this is one time funding for 2013 only.  We will have a huge fundraising burden ahead as well as we will need to raise our entire future budget outside of city funds.

It was my understanding that the city's 2012 funding for Media Bridges was supposed to be temporary as well. At least they now understand that the 2013 funding is temporary and they need to look elsewhere for next year...

^wonder where they got the money from.

Loved Winburn saying he was all for domestic violence in the budget committee meeting.

Michelle Dillingham has announced that she is running for Cincinnati City Council in 2013.

She is a Democrat who lives in Kennedy Heights and served as an aide to former city councilmember David Crowley. She is very interested in transportation, schools, and urban agriculture.

The 700wlw anti city crew has claimed another.  Pg sittenfeld is hosting a show on there today.

How soon before he starts spewing the 700wlw talking points like smitherman and winburn?

  • 1 month later...

Amy Murray (@Amy_Murray) keeps missing a space before typing @ and isn't talking to anyone...

As of now I have the following running for council:

Incumbents:

Laure Quinlivan (D)

Christopher Smitherman (I)

Wendell Young (D)

PG Sittenfeld (D)

Yvette Simpson (D,C)

Chris Seelbach (D)

Charlie Winburn ®

Former Councilmembers:

Amy Murray [R]

David Mann [D in the past]

New Faces:

Greg Landsman [D probably]

Michelle Dillingham [D probably]

Pamula Thomas [D probably] (Cecil Thomas' wife who may be appointed if Thomas resigns from council early, which may happen to give her incumbent status)

Old Faces:

[Probably] Sandra Queen Noble (I)

I know I'm missing some people. But who are they? Is David Pepper thinking of running? These, aside from SQN, are likely the frontrunners regardless of who else runs (though Seelbach, Simpson, and Sittenfeld did better than most would expect last election). There were 23 officially running last election and I've come up with 13.

Is David Pepper thinking of running?

I don't think he lives in the city anymore.

I know I'm missing some people. But who are they?

Kevin Johnson [D probably]

If Pepper runs for anything my guess would be Attorney General or another statewide office

Sam Malone might be running again.  Seriously.

^I think I heard he might be looking at AG.

I swear I heard Noble was running for mayor, which would explain why Cranley & Qualls haven't officially declared yet - with Noble in the running neither would stand a chance.

Noble is a force.

Pepper is running for AG.

Sam Malone is almost certainly running again.

Likely/announced D's:

Sittenfeld

Simpson

Seelback

Quinlivan

Thomas (Pamela)

Young

Dillingham

Landsman

Mann

Johnson

Likely/announced R's:

Winburn

Malone

Murray

Note that there are 10 D's so someone won't get an endorsement.
