Posted May 8, 200718 yr Okay people....this is my first photo post, so be easy on me! I am getting used to my camera and still a little unsure of what settings I should use to take pictures in different lighting...as you will see, I am definitely not a photographer! (but I am going to try). Since this is my profession, I figured why not start with what I know. Some pictures may be a little fuzzy/dark/and maybe not the best perspective...but like I said, I am new to this AND I did all these from the seat of my scooter! :) Here is a look at all the "active" firehouses in the City of Cleveland. I wish I would have had time to go around and snap a few photos of the "old" firehouses that have been converted for other uses. The older houses had so much more charm and character than the newer crap that was built to replace them. Notice the numbering of the station does not make sense due to the fact that many single engine houses were closed and combined with other stations to save money. Enjoy.... station #1 and headquarters (E17th/Superior) station #4 (W30th/Lorain) station #5 (E32nd/Lakeside) station #6 (E176th/harvard) station #7 (E37th/Woodland) station #9 (E67th/Woodland) station #10 (E105th/Chester) station #11 (Broadway near Fleet) station #13 (E49th/Broadway) station #17 (E66th/Chester) station #20 (W25th/Archwood) station #21 (Carter/Scranton) also houses the fire boat in rear on the river different view station #22 (E72nd/Superior) station #23 (W98th/Madison) station #24 (W44th/Clark) station #26 (E79th/Kinsman) station #28 (Commercial/Carnegie) station #30 (E102nd/St. Clair) station #31 (E152nd/St. Clair) station #33 (W117th/Linnet) station #36 (E131st/Bartlett) station #38 (Bellaire/Wanda) station #39 (W157th/Lorain) station #40 (E190th/St. Clair) station #41 (E116th/Parkview) station #42 (Pearl/Stickney) station #43 (Rocky River Dr/Fairville) Fire Training Academy (Lakeside next to St #5) Union office (Rocky River Dr/Albers) That's all for now...hopefully I will get some input on what I can do to make my pics a little better! :)
May 8, 200718 yr Among the newer stations, I think #20 at W25th and Archwood is one of my favorites. Friends of mine live very near there, and I've admired the station when visiting. I think you're off to a pretty good start. One thing to keep in mind when shooting in bright sunny weather is that the contrast (difference between light and shadow) will always appear greater and shadows will appear darker in the photo than they appeared to your eye when you took the picture. If you have access to photo editing software like Photoshop, you can adjust the contrast in the finished product. Overall pretty decent, though, I think.
May 8, 200718 yr My fav: Not sure why...but the right side of all my pics were cut off!?!?! :wtf: Go to the bottom of your post and use the scroll button. Photobucket has a set size (that you can adjust somewhat) for its images. Your images seem to be slightly larger than mine (hence more needed scrolling). Toy around with your settings and how your images then translate into your posts. Thanks for sharing, I love these types of themed threads...hopefully more to come from Cleveland!
May 8, 200718 yr Well done. I like Stations #26 and #36. Next you should take pics of all of the former stations in their various states of disrepair and reuse, i.e., the old #20 on West 25th near the current one.
May 8, 200718 yr Most of those deserved to be burned to the ground; I can't believe Cleveland only has 4 historic firehouses still in use. Thanks for the pics, however, can't wait to see more!
May 8, 200718 yr There are actually 5 in use, (21,24,26,36and 39 with the new addition) but I couldn't agree with you more! I HATE the "newer styles (whether they be 1947 or 87!). Off the top of my head I can think of 4 that are still around, one on Braodview sitting empty, one on W25th converted into an office, one on Scranton converted into a house, and one on Lorain near Dennison that was converted into a pizza shop. It is a shame the city didin't upgrade these and keep them in use. Some were on side streets and others were in disrepair, so I guess the city felt it easier to close these gems, consolidate stations together, put them on main streets, and build the newer crap that they did. UHG!!! What is really hard to gather from these pics is the very urban feel the neighborhoods around them have. In each pic most of the stations look as if they sit in the middle of nowhere, when in fact that is not the case. I think the historic stations had a better neighborhood feel and were, shall I say, woven into the fabric of the neighborhood they sat in! Hooray for "pgrogress"....
May 8, 200718 yr Great job on your first photo thread - I love the older stations, especially #36! clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
May 8, 200718 yr What a great idea for a thread. Thanks! Re: reused old stations, there's one on Carnegie near E. 14th or so that now houses Lou Frangos's office (Mr. USA Parking). The shell is awesome, the inside unfortunately has been totally gutted and redone.

May 8, 200718 yr Besides the four historic buildings, I think the two newest ones look the next best. I don't know what happened in between '47 and '87. EDIT: And only the historic ones look like you'd be able to slide down the pool, haha.
May 8, 200718 yr This is pretty cool, my grandpa owned the old firehouse on Broadview in Old Brooklyn for about 20 years.
May 8, 200718 yr yeah the "new" stations are a shame. generic junk just like the schools of that era. what was america thinking? sheesh. i was a clev/lorain firefighter's kid and one of my earliest memories is getting held out until i could reach the firepole and grabbing it and sliding down. also wearing the boots in the station (every ff's kid would know what i mean about stepping into those giant sized boots and trying to walk haha). so yeah of course great thread. and ditto please do another thread on the old closed stations too. i didn't notice in the clev but last time i was in lorain i saw that people had bought some old stations and turned them into houses or offices or something.
May 29, 200718 yr Won't you miss that monstrous Rescue 1 truck? I worked at UH in the ER when Cleveland first got one of those rescues, and our director worried about it getting stuck under the canopy in the ambulance bay.
May 30, 200718 yr ^ That is why we never pulled under the canopy, we just parked off to the side. It IS a large vehicle, not really meant for routine Pt. transports, but EMS routinely stuck us with "you are to handle" calls...which meant they weren't sending an ambulance. The 4 rescues carry a lot of technical equipment for many situations from firefighting to special rescues (water/high angle/entrapment)....I DO miss working on Rescue 1, but this is a temporary and deserved recharging period for me.
May 30, 200718 yr Is 42 a single truck station or is it just the neighborhood that makes it a less-busy station? Won't you get stuck with all the I-480 accidents and mutual aid for Brooklyn, etc? (My cousin is a captain in Lorain, and their heavy rescue is a former beer truck! Cleveland's rescues are much cooler... :cool2:)
