Blink co-creator partners with 3CDC on chicken wing festival

bones-brothers-wings*150xx749-562-126-0.

The co-creator of Cincinnati’s popular Blink event has partnered with the Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. to hold a chicken wing festival and competition this fall in Over-the-Rhine.

OTR-based experimental marketing agency Agar and 3CDC will host more than 20 Cincinnati wing vendors alongside live music in Washington Park for its “Queen of the Wing” festival Sept. 28. While the two organizations have worked with together in the past, this is their first partnership in co-hosting an event.

“We are looking to get all of the best wing vendors in the city together,” said Emily Stowe, event marketing manager at 3CDC. “The idea is that there are so many — and all these restaurants where you don’t necessarily think of chicken wings. It’s on everybody’s menu and everybody does it differently.”

Cincinnati’s Oktoberfest celebration expands

pnoktoberfest*750xx1200-676-0-123.jpg

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is getting even bigger this year.

The annual German heritage celebration will become an official citywide half-day holiday following a proclamation from Mayor John Cranley.

“Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is one of our most important traditions,” Cranley said in a statement. “And it’s time we recognize it as the holiday it is!”

As a result, the event, which is produced by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, will extend its hours to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20. The festival previously began at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Blink announces artist lineup for 2019

blinkcincinnatischaffeld-43*750xx1440-81

Cincinnati's Blink festival, featuring giant murals and state-of-the-art projection mapping to make them come alive, announced the initial lineup of artists for the 2019 incarnation of the experience.

Blink was first put on in 2017, drawing a record crowd of more than 1 million to Cincinnati's urban core. It featured the works of more than 100 artists across the Banks, the Central Business District and Over-the-Rhine, including 20 projection mappings over murals and buildings.

Blink 2019, taking place Oct. 10-13, promises to be bigger, expanding its geographic reach to Northern Kentucky and upping the projection mappings to nearly double at 39. Those will feature the work of 36 artists and groups, including 21 from Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Gorilla Cinema partners with Pan Am to recreate the golden age of aviation

Gorilla Cinema, the Cincinnati-based creative company behind some of the most unique and innovative bars in the city, is partnering with Pan Am to bring the golden age of aviation back.

Gorilla Cinema – which has created bars like Pleasant Ridge's Overlook Lodge themed after Stanley Kubrick's "the Shining"; Walnut Hills' Video Archive inspired by the works of director Quentin Tarantino; Tokyo Kitty, a Japanese-style karaoke lounge with private rooms inspired by Sofia Coppola's "Lost in Translation;" and the Lonely Pine Steakhouse, a love letter to Route 66 roadside steakhouses – is creating the Pan Am Layover Lodge as a limited-time pop-up inside downtown's Tokyo Kitty over six nights from Oct. 8-13.

The pop-up event is ticketed and offers a 45-minute experience that will see one of Tokyo Kitty's private rooms transformed into a layover lounge in an exotic locale serviced by Pan Am during its height as a luxury airline.

"The layover lounge is far more immersive than anything we've done before, which I feel like says a lot," Gorilla Cinema founder Jacob Trevino told me. "It was really about creating the feeling and vibe of hanging out in a first-class Pan Am lounge while waiting for your flight."

These streets will close during Blink 2019

Visitors to Blink are being encouraged to avoid driving downtown to attend the second edition of the art and light celebration.

Many of the streets in the Central Business District and Over-the-Rhine will be completely closed during the evenings Oct. 10-13 for the event. Blink is expected to span 30 total city blocks from Findlay Market across the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge into Covington.

Access to many primary and side streets along that route will be restricted beginning at 7 p.m. each night. Other roadways will close earlier in the day, and some hospitality areas will be restricted all day throughout the duration of the event.

On-street parking will be available along the event route but only before 7 p.m. Anyone parked on streets or in parking garages along the route after 7 p.m. will be permitted to exit closed streets but won’t be allowed to re-enter. Local access for residents and businesses will be maintained.

The National confirms Homecoming festival's return in 2020

Indie rock group the National is officially bringing the Homecoming music festival back to the banks of the Ohio River for 2020.

The National is bringing Homecoming back for a three-day festival, one day longer than the inaugural music festival in 2018, from May 8-10 at Smale Riverfront Park. Tickets go up for public pre-sale on Nov. 18, and the lineup will be announced Nov. 20.

"The National" has a homecoming...to Washington, DC?  Nah, Cincinnati.  Stupidest band name ever.

Boomer is a state of mind.

The National burst onto the scene with their 2007 and 2010 albums. Boomer bands burst onto the scene in 1970-1985 and are doing their "we ran out of money" tours now.

I'm probably in The National's biggest demographic: 27, white, college-educated

Edited by 10albersa

The National is boring sad-boy music for boring sad-boys.  The singer is basically a sad-boy mumbler.  If you mumbled in my house my dad hit you.  So when I hear mumbling I have a pavlovian response.  I also take offense that the band makes a big deal out of its "homecoming" concerts as if they're some sort of intrinsic part of this city like Pete Rose or Bob Huggins or even Nick Lachey.

Wow... That is... something.

No matter the genre, mumbling is lame. Don't hate it because it's new -- don't like it because it's new either.

image.png.e977ebac4ac8a8292cd911684093ad8c.png

There's no real excuse for mumble with as much good other music that's being made today. I can understand why mumble could have been acceptable during good music droughts such as the early-mid 2000s as long as it came with good melodies from the instruments but that wasn't the case. Female-fronted bands today are really important since they're not mumbling for the most part (except Billie Elisih), singing nasally like 14-year-olds or unintentionally sounding like Fez from That '70s Show. Just sing, people.

This is one of the most Boomer things I've heard on this site.

Anyway in all seriousness, I understand why people wouldn't like this band.  For most fans, liking them was a slow burn.  Most of their songs aren't all that attractive on the surface and if you aren't willing to sit through multiple runs of an album over the course of a week, it's easy to just move on and forget about them.

That said, Bloodbuzz Ohio is an absolute jam and doesn't take multiple listens to enjoy, one of their least mumble-ly songs.

Liking the music festival has nothing to do with liking the band that puts it on. I loved Homecoming last year and didn't even attend the National's headlining shows because the other bands were great.

How many people go to Lollapalooza because they love Perry Farrel and/or Jane's Addiction?

Well I'm a big National fan, but I loved seeing Father John Misty, Lord Huron and Julien Baker.

Also, posters must just love trolling or are just truly a sh*tty people to feel the need post over and over again how you don't like a band with local roots who's hosting an Indie Rock Festival on the cities front lawn.

I actually like some of the band's side projects more than the band itself, including El Vy and Big Red Machine. The song below has the line "Don't make me wait for you at the corner of Eden Park, Don't make me wait for you at the Serpentine Wall", what Cincinnatian doesn't like that?

El Vy - Return to the Moon

^ There's also a song on that El Vy album that has the line "I'm from f-cking Delhi, not f-cking Over-The-Rhine"

Of Monsters and Men is a weird top bill act IMO, it was such a crazy mix of amazing talent the first time around, I'm really curious who the downbill acts are going to be once the schedule fills out a bit more.

They've sold a lot of "records" (er, had a lot of spins, or whatever combination they use to determine success today) and sound good so I can see it.

I get it, I mean it makes sense they're a top bill act (I guess I just find it weird for The National to hitch their train to them). It seems everyone last time was just like so curated to The National and their sound - this one kind of just seems like an indie music fest. Maybe I've got rose colored glasses on looking back at the first HC, but damn it was just near perfect.

Bunbury Music Festival postponed again due to pandemic

The organizers of Bunbury Music Festival announced on Monday that the event would be postponed for a second year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"It was our hope that the big picture would look very differently by this stage, but unfortunately it is with the safety and wellbeing of our fans, artists and staff in mind that we have chosen to postpone our plans for the next installment of Bunbury Music Festival," organizers PromoWest wrote in a news release shared on Bunbury's website and social media accounts.

PromoWest left the door open to reschedule Bunbury for a later date this year. Organizers have held the music festival on the first or second weekend in June at Sawyer Point Park and Yeatman's Cove shortly after began in 2012.

"It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

Most of the concerts/festivals I wanted to go to in 2020 were simply cancelled, but a few were delayed by 1 year. I suspect it won't be very long before those shows are either cancelled or delayed again, as it still seems very unclear when it will be safe to have large gatherings again.

That's sad but expected. I've been drinking Braxton Wintertrip and Roadtrip this winter and all of them have shrink wrapped can covers with 2020 Bunbury Buzz cans underneath the wrap. I can't wait to be at a music festival or concert again.

Blink returning this year Oct. 13-16. I can't wait for a super crowded downtown basin again after the last couple years. I'm curious what the scope will be this year, I love the Cov as much as anyone, but I think it was too spread out last time and the logistics just didn't work. I would rather them focus on downtown/OTR and have more density of displays so there aren't a couple blocks between each thing to look at.

BLINK illuminates the Cincinnati region this October

BLINK®, illuminated by tens of thousands of donors who give to ArtsWave, is back. Organized by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, working with partners AGAR, ArtWorks, Brave Berlin and the Haile Foundation, the light, projection mapping and art festival returns October 13-16, 2022, under the leadership of a new executive director.

The Chamber and ArtsWave announced BLINK's return in front of BLINK 2019 artist Herakut's mural by the Elm and Liberty Street streetcar stop. A new BLINK-themed Cincinnati Bell Connector streetcar wrap was unveiled during the announcement. This wrap was designed by ArtsWave, working in partnership with Cincinnati Bell and the City of Cincinnati, and features vibrant images from both previous BLINK celebrations. Now it becomes a permanent fixture on the streetcar route, joining two other arts-centric designs: Brent Billingsley's "WE ARE ALL 'HUE-MAN'" and a wrap that celebrates Music Hall.
