Certainly not Cincinnati proper, but this festival has a nice lineup.  Surprised I just heard of it recently, and this one involves camping.  I have never been to the Renaissance festival - anyone familiar with these grounds?

Yeah the Renaissance Fair's buildings are permanent.  So it's like a fake English town with city walls and a castle.  But totally different than the Loveland Castle.  It's right off of I-71.  There is only about a mile between 71 and Ceasar Creek State Park.

I can't tell from the website if they're going to use the actual jousting area and all that.  If they do, it will be awesome.

The satanic ska band Mephiskapheles is kicking off their 2018 tour next week in Cincinnati:

mephiskapheles_zpsi81keesf.jpg

I first heard them on WAIF, probably in 1994.  Specifically, this song:

I saw them at Bogart's in 1996 and then at Ripley's (where the Clifton Heights Chipotle is now) in 1998.  The band disappeared without a trace on December 31, 1999...they didn't even have a website or an email address.  After a 13-year Y2K hiatus, they returned with only a week or two's notice to play a bowling alley in New Jersey at midnight Jan 1, 2013.  They have been mildly active since.

...at a deli?

...at a deli?

Affirmative.  It's definitely a lot nicer than the Riddle Rd. Market's back patio.

...at a deli?

....in Pleasant Ridge?

The Grand Central Deli is a pretty nice spot...for me to poop on.  No, seriously, it's a nice place that you would expect in a college area but it's Pleasant Ridge.

Here was the band tonight, playing their smash hit from 2015 Satan Stole My Weed:

Also, mark September 6 on your calendars...The Pietasters will be playing the Northside Yacht Club:

https://www.thepietasters.com/tour-dates/

The whole thrust of the band was a tacky Wilson Picket revival.  The singer's act was a self-parody -- he was kind of an alcoholic jerk but his act was much more of an alcoholic jerk.  I and my friends found the whole shtick endlessly entertaining...we probably first heard the band in 1994 and it was love at first listen.  They sold out Bogart's several times in the 90s...the best show saw my friend Mike thrown out for shining a pointer laser in the bouncer's eye, then the band threw their guitarist face-first off the stage and nobody caught him.  You can't make this stuff up.

The perspective of all Pietasters songs was from the cage of a lousy but unbreakupable relationship.  The singer is always drunk and always actively attempting to break things up, but never does.  In the next song he'll be back, he'll be drunk again, and we'll hear the same blame and excuses.  Then, the album typically resolves with an about face where he crawls back to his woman and denies everything that happened during the preceding 40 minutes.

somewhere in a box full of boxes, in the basement on a back shelf, I have a pietasters CD from college.  a "live" version I think.  Some fun songs.  Never quite mainstream though

somewhere in a box full of boxes, in the basement on a back shelf, I have a pietasters CD from college.  a "live" version I think.  Some fun songs.  Never quite mainstream though

Was it Strapped Live?  I never heard that one, except maybe the live version of Drinking & Driving.  It's amazing how big that band was in the 90s to have never entered the public consciousness.  I was there when they sold out or nearly sold out Bogart's, multiple times. Presumably that happened nationwide. Where did those 800+ people in each city go?

Oh yeah I just remembered that Drinking & Driving song...it went something like:

Oh what the hell I'll have another one

'cause drinking & driving is so much fun

It was a cover (was the original band The Business?  I can't remember)...and they'd end the shows with that and 30-40 people would start flipping the tables and stealing gear.  You'd see the bartenders getting so pissed.

‘Cincinnati's hottest art installation’ is a real swinger

swinghouse1*750xx1800-1013-0-94.jpg

Large-scale installation art is nothing new, but "Swing House" by artist Mark de Jong feels revolutionary.

Especially when you consider that the New York Times recently included it in their travel series, "52 Places To Go," deeming it “Cincinnati’s hottest art installation.” Also referenced in the article are Carew Tower, Music Hall and the Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel, so "Swing House"is in good – and prestigious – company.

"Swing House," which opened in October 2017, is an idea 30 years in the making. Located at 1373 Avon Place in Camp Washington, it represents the next step in de Jong’s artistic evolution as a self-described “builder-artist.”

I just thought of the best west side metal band name ever: Maurey's Tiny Coven.

Just a crazy thought here this also relates to the homeless issue on third street, but what is going to happen during Oktoberfest? Its one of the biggest events for the city and having the homeless camped out along the festival path should make for some interesting issues coming up...

They have made them clear out the last couple years so I imagine they'll make them move again.  Obviously wasn't as many people who were moving in past years though.  Like you said though this will become a much bigger issue if we get close to the event and they're still there so the city better figure out a solution before then.

They'll have to either begin or end the set with this one:

The Pietasters played Cincinnati tonight for the first time in 15+ years.  They were pretty incredible.  The crowd was nuts.  I think it's safe to say that they have a "cult following".  It was the best concert I've been to in several years.

I hesitated to tell people to go see this band because of the lineup changes since I last saw them more than 10 years ago.  But they were on-spot.  They are one of the few ambassadors of 1950s proto-rock & roll and 1960s soul that are playing in...2018.  Yeah, they're definitely a cartoon, but you get a taste of what it must have been like to see Wilson Picket in his heyday.  Which, in my opinion, was an example of American popular music at its most compelling.  It's like, do I want to see a band that celebrates American music in the way that The Blues Brothers celebrated American music, or do I want to see some slicked-up dork with a laptop who calls himself a DJ?

Taft, other local institutions to offer free admission on Museum Day

taftmuseum*750xx1800-1014-0-0.jpg

The Taft Museum of Art and several other cultural institutions around Greater Cincinnati will provide free admission Sept. 22 as part of Museum Day.

Hosted by Smithsonian magazine, Museum Day is an annual one-day event in which participating museums across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a special ticket that's available on the Smithsonian's website. Participants may download one ticket per email address, which provides free general admission for two people. The tickets are not valid for special exhibitions or IMAX screenings.

Visitors to the Taft, located at 316 Pike St., downtown, can check out the museum’s permanent collection or see the exhibition, “Running with Freedom,” showcasing the work of Duncanson artist-in-residence Vanessa German. German’s mixed-media sculptures and reliefs – constructed from found objects and household items – bridge the past and present while challenging racial stereotypes. The exhibition runs through Oct. 21.

Why is Cincinnati so obsessed with pop emo and alt rock? Compared to peer sized festivals Bunbury lately has been skewed very alternative rock and I'm just not a fan of nearly anyone on this list. This is why we need Midpoint to make a triumphant return (or have Homecoming again).

THe 1975 already has a sold out May show in town on the 12th with Pale Waves, are they just going to hang around for this one too?

NOPE! Just checked, they are busy.

May 12 – Cincinnati, OH @ PNC Pavilion at Riverbend Music Center
May 14 – Columbus, OH @ Express Live! Outdoor
May 15 – Nashville, TN @ Ascend Ampitheater
May 18 – Atlanta, GA @ State Bank Ampitheatre at Chastain Park
May 19 – Charlotte, NC @ Charlotte Metro Credit Union Ampitheatre
May 21 – Washington, DC @ The Anthem

update

Pop emo, alt rock, edm and rap are what 20 somethings are into.  There's a reason why Bunbury gets a lot bigger crowds then Homecoming did or Midpoint ever did.  I hope those other two concerts continue/start up again just so everyone can get their type of music but Bunbury exists to make money so they get acts that will bring the biggest crowds.

Cincinnati Music Festival gains national spotlight

The Cincinnati Music Festival has been named on the best in the business by a national publication.

Essence Magazine listed the annual summer event among the best R&B music festivals of the year.

The recognition comes after an Essence Magazine writer attended the music festival in 2013 following an invitation from Source Cincinnati.

The people who are going to music festivals now are people who listened to emo in middle school or high school.

Including myself, but didn't people move on? I saw four of these bands at Bogarts years ago, but does that mean you should be headlining a music festival in 2019? You don't see ska bands headlining festivals so nostalgia only explains part of it, the other part is just bad bands that play on the radio. I feel like old people setup this lineup thinking they know what 'the kids' are listening to based on the radio, not realizing 'the kids' use the internet to listen to music. Greta Van Fleet and Run the Jewels are well reviewed bands, the 1975 is very popular right now and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong will attract the wookies, and Triiibe is a good local group but the rest of the lineup is just really meh.

Yeah, it's silly, but for whatever reason, the emo nostalgia thing is at its peak right now. So much so that a "MySpace Emo Prom" was held last year.

I know and the world is worse for it.

What I wouldn't give to have the Bosstones headlining The Pietasters, Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug, and No Doubt.

Early 2000s nostalgia is coming on strong! It seems that the late '90s got skipped.

Maybe Gil Mantera's Party Dream will come back:

So if people became nostalgic for this band in 2019, they'd be nostalgic for an act that made fun of 2019 in the 2000s.

I don't think third-wave ska lasted as long or got as big as emo.

Streetlight Manifesto is a good ska-punk band on the lineup. They came well after the peak of third-wave, but continued bearing the torch.

Run the Jewels and Streetlight Manifesto are the only groups on there I'm interested in. If they play on the same day, I'll consider getting a one-day ticket.

Looking forward to the Bellwether lineup to be announced. Last year was great.

Bourbon festival coming to Northern Kentucky this year

A bourbon festival showing off Northern Kentucky as the edge of the Commonwealth's bourbon country will debut this year from the founders of some of the region's largest festivals.

Kentucky's Edge 2019 kicks off Oct. 4-5 in bars, restaurants and venues all over Covington and Newport. The festival is being organized by Bill Donabedian and Kevin Canafax, who put on Brandemonium in Cincinnati in 2017 and 2018. Donabedian is also the co-founder of the MidPoint, Bunbury, Buckle Up and Bellwether music festivals.

^ Curious to see the lineup of musicians.

I love the idea of Midpoint with bourbon. Hopefully this event is successful at bringing people going to bourbon country through CVG instead of Louisville. With CVGs prices coming down it should be the gateway to the bluegrass and hopefully this festival helps put nky on peoples radars (since nationally people don’t realize how close Cincy is to Kentucky).

This will be the weekend before Blink returns so that whole week could have a lot of out of towners visiting the area.

One of the biggest attractions of Blink Cincinnati's inaugural year in 2017 is coming back this year, and it's going to be even bigger than the first go-round.

Architects of Air, which created a massive luminarium sculpture that occupied Washington Park in 2017, will return for Blink 2019.

Architects of Air, a company founded in 1992 by engineer Alan Parkinson and based in Nottingham, England, creates luminaria, or large labyrinthian sculptures made of fabric, through which light is shown to create color effects. Participants can travel through the maze-like structure.

Cincinnati craft brewery helps bring new music festival downtown

A Cincinnati craft brewery is helping to bring a folk music festival that has taken place in Indiana for much of the past decade to downtown Cincinnati.

Fretboard Brewing Co. is partnering with the Whispering Beard Folk Festival to bring it to Smale Riverfront Park Aug. 22-24. The folk music festival has taken place at a campground in Friendship, Ind., for the past several years of its 12-year history.

"We've never reached out for sponsorship before, and when Fretboard came to the table, our interest was really high," Whispering Beard organizer Casey Campbell told me. "We're aiming for a talent budget we've never been able to touch, so we're trying to kick it into high gear."

Cincinnati USA Convention & Visitors Bureau plans a series of new events celebrating diversity and inclusion tied to the Cincinnati Music Festival this week.
