Cadillac Ranch Acts Like a Big Stupid Chain

http://www.buycincy.com/2009/09/cadillac-ranch-acts-like-a-big.html

By Sean Fisher | BuyCincy, September 27, 2009

After hearing one band they were unhappy with, Cadillac Ranch pulled the plug on visiting Midpoint Music Festival bands scheduled to play Saturday night at his venue. After Cleveland's The Lighthouse and The Whaler finished their low-key 8pm set, Cadillac Ranch had enough and canceled performances from bands that came to Cincinnati from New York, Louisville, and Nashville, citing lack of profit.

Luckily, the four bands scheduled to play at Cadillac Ranch were able to find other venues, however those who showed up to Cadillac Ranch to see them play were greeted with a DJ. The decision to cancel on bands that had traveled up to 13 hours to play in Cincinnati is not only terribly unethical, and not only shows the city that has supported bar's profits in a bad light, it may have been a bad business decision.

You see, the four bands scheduled to play Saturday night were higher tempo rock bands, not the mellow Folk/Indie that the 8pm band was playing. Here is how the Citybeat Midpoint Guide explained some the bands that were canceled at Cadillac Ranch:

  • In Cadeo: A more Technicolor version of The National, a more minor-key black-and-white version of The Jam
  • Finding Fiction: The Strokes with blue-collor roots and influences
  • Mean Tambourines: Supergrass and Spacehog and David Bowie and The Cars in the Rock version of Survivor

After the Cadillac Ranch reported better than average sales from Midpoint Thursday and Friday night, General Manager Gordy Fitzwater blamed Midpoint for a decrease in sales for the first band Saturday night. He told the Enquirer, "We had pretty much a full house when we started, and we lost at least 75 percent of our crowd," Fitzwater said. "We did (MidPoint) last year, and it was a good thing for us. I think whoever put (this year) together didn't do the research."

Well, apparently the research was good enough to increase profits during the first two night of Midpoint 2009. In that same Enquirer article, Fitzwater stated business was up Thursday and Friday during Midpoint, and their participation in last year's Midpoint schedule brought in money as well. When the money from Midpoint dried up for one hour, instead of approaching Midpoint after the festival or simply deciding not to host bands next year, the bar took the profit they already received and ran.

I would be willing to bet that had they followed through with their promise to host the scheduled out of town bands, business would have returned. Instead, Cadillac Ranch acted as bad host for the city, showing without a doubt that even though a city can support a corporate chain, a corporate chain will never support a city.

That's just one more reason for me to never visit Cadillac Ranch.  Eff them.

That's Bush League!

Cadillac Ranch should be ashamed of themselves.  They were a venue last year, so they should know how MPMF works.  Had they allowed the rest of the bands to play on Saturday night, I'm certain that they would have had a crowd again.  Their actions make Cincinnati look bad.

Pretty amazing to read, huh?  That this place cancels the bands the day of the show.  Just wow.

Funny thing Ive been by that place many times and always pass on eating or drinking there, it just looks so....polyester.

I am FINALLY going to Bockfest!  And I'm combining it with the Dave Dorfman modeern dance show @ the Aranoff (it's going to be about funk music, something we in Dayton..of a certain generation... hold dear)

Anyway it will be a downtown time,,,,hotel is Garfield Suites, and the dance show is at 8:30 on Friday evening, leaving time to go to the Bockfest parade which steps off @ 6 PM.

Then, on Saturday, it's off to Bockfest Hall to take the Prohibition Resistance Tour!  Wow...I am finally going on one of these!!!.  Already bought my ticket.

After that it's down to Louisville for yet more dance.  Louisville Ballet doing....Copellia, a classic ballet.

So, if any UO'er is going to Bockfest on Friday let me know and maybe we will meet???

Well, today and tomorrow are the big days.  My first visit to Bockfest and the Prohbition Resistance Tour.  Yay.

AND I get to cash in my crepe card at that crepe place on Court Street.  Double yay.

Sorry but the weather looks like it will be pretty dismal.  I'll be there with a bunch of kids, usually we are at Shadeau Breads or Iris Book Cafe.

I'll be there!  We won't be letting a little rain slow us down.  My wife and I and a big group of friends/family will be heading to the parade first, then drinking some homebrew'd bock at our place, then heading over to Bockfest hall for the festivities.  Can't wait to get off work!

Many of these events will be back at Fountain Square this year.  Yesterday I walked down to FS to check out the market.  It looks like the number of vendors is down from last year.  I wonder if this is just because the markets are starting back up?  There was only one produce vendor, and in past years there have been 2-3.

I picked up a flyer for this at Shake-It last weekend, and am curious if this is worth going to.  Any of the Cincy forumers ever been?

This will probably be one of the cooler music festivals in Cincinnati since Desdemona.  I am looking forward to seeing the lineup fill out, but the headliners are a nice start - can't wait for Death Cab and Weezer.  It looks like the 3 day pass will be well worth it for any UO fans out there:

http://bunburyfestival.com/

Ack!  It's DURING the World Choir Games!  There's always too much happening downtown during the summer.  I never have time for these things.

^ What you just said, is actually a wonderful statement.

This is, I believe, the first time Jane's Addiction has played Cincinnati since 1990, when they played Bogart's.  The first time I heard Nothing's Shocking was as a high school freshman riding in the hatch of a hatchback with two bazooka tubes.  That record was and still is incredible.

And the next 3 announced:  Airborne Toxic Event (Friday), Manchester Orchestra (Saturday) and Gym Class Heroes (Saturday).

So Saturday will have Manchester Orchestra and Weezer.....

Bunbury is going to be sweet right on the river.

  • 1 month later...

The lineup was released today at noon: http://www.bunburyfestival.com/music-more/bands

Friday, July 13: Jane’s Addiction (headliner); Airborne Toxic Event; Minus the Bear; O.A.R; Foxy Shazam; Ra Ra Riot; LP; Matt Pryor; Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band; Ponderosa; All Get Out; The Minor Leagues; Lauren Mann; She Does Is Magic; Bo & the Locomotive; Tristen; Pet Clinic

Saturday, July 14: Weezer (headliner); Gym Class Heroes; Manchester Orchestra; GroupLove; RJD2; Dan Deacon; Jukebox the Ghost; The Bright Light Social Hour; Kevin Devine; The Silent Comedy; Graffiti 6; 1,2,3; Secret Music; Messerly & Ewing; 500 Miles To Memphis; Lions Rampant; Jeremy Pinnell & the 55’s; Wheels on Fire; Hotfox

Sunday, July 15: Death Cab for Cutie; City and Colour; Motion City Soundtrack; Guided By Voices; Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s; Good Old War; Lights; Will Hoge; Maps & Atlases; YAWN; Now, Now; Wussy; Seedy Seeds; The Tillers.

I was pretty disappointed after the initial headliners were announced, but this legitimizes the festival in my opinion.

My favorites are bolded, though the best part of music festivals (in my opinion) is discovering new music between the announced lineup and the actual festival. Very excited about this!

I think I'll start looking for a baby-sitter now for this festival.  :)

lol after just getting back from Coachella, this lineup does absolutely nothing for me.  But still cool that Cincy landed this show! I might go if I'm back in Cincy at this time.

Passion Pit was added as a headliner, which is pretty cool. Excited to see the DJ stage!

Ah, that's awesome! I'm hoping for great weather and an even better turn out so this can become an annual festival!

Hm, a little heavy on the white rappers, no? It will be interesting to see who shows up for the house shows...it'd be hilarious to see rave kids all decked out walking through the streets of Downtown Cincinnati!

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow - 2012 is really turning into a banner year for Cincinnati for concerts both big and small.  Just this week I got to see Radiohead at Riverbend who put on a great show.  Although I am not a huge fan of them, it was kind of cool that the Red Hot Chili Peppers were in the audience and were playing US Bank the next night.  It has just been amazing so far to have the quality of shows we have had at 20th Century, Bogarts, US Bank, and a fairly packed Riverbend schedule.....

Anyway, to keep the momentum going it seems that Midpoint is really taking hold, and this year's line up includes Grizzly Bear, Sleigh Bells, and indie/alt legends Dinosaur Jr.
