January and Wood Company: Once operating as a textile for nearly as long as this river town has existed, it closed its doors in 2003. Demolition began soon after, but was ordered stopped due to improper demolition techniques. Today, the building stands half-demolished, looming over the downtown and becoming quite an eyesore.

Read more about the history in the article; 20 photographs accompany the location. Two photographs were also added to a photo gallery regarding the Parker Tobacco Company.

Enjoy!

This scene really surprised me. To the right is a sheer drop-off, where demolition work suddenly came to a halt due to environmental concerns. The new owners of the building attempted to demolish the textile mill without doing any remedial work and was in violation of numerous state and federal laws. And machinery like this still sits, awaiting its final fate.

This part of the building was surprisingly sheltered. It was collapsing on all three sides.

Good shots! It saddens me that when long-time enterprises shut down, so often the last people just turn out the lights and leave. There's no attempt to salvage or liquidate supplies and furniture that would be useful or desirable to someone, and no thought for the future of the property. It's a pretty powerful example of a throwaway society.

great thread. like rob said, very strange how we just close shop and walk away.

btw this is maysville, ky. here is a pic of the site from one of the news articles that was linked - looks like a big downtown site?:

Yeah it was once quite a large mill. Someone bought out the newer buildings (1970s?) and run a company from it; the remainder is to be demolished.

It's adjacent to the downtown. Go down one of the main streets and WAP, its dead center. I've been going to Maysville for years and didn't think anything was abandoned... until I found the Hayswood Hospital, Parker Tobacco Company, and now this. Jockey left a few years back (another very hard hit for the city) as well. The city's been suffering for a while :(
