Posted May 20, 200718 yr We will be locating to the Cleveland area from Michigan. My husband's new job is in Macedonia, however we like the older homes available in Cleveland which doesn't seem to be too far of a commute. I've seem some lovely homes at realtor.com but know nothing about the areas they are located in, Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Shaker Heights, also how far away is the town of Euclid or South Euclid and do you know anything about them? Thanks!
May 20, 200718 yr I'll direct you to the below subboard for now -- this post will probably get moved there. There you'll find anything you need to know and lots of people eager to help you out and answer any questions you have. :-) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?board=20.0
May 20, 200718 yr Cleveland has wonderful old housing at great prices. While I think there is more expertise here for the city, I think there are still many who live or have lived in the inner ring suburbs..like those mentioned above. Of those communitied you mentioned I think Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights are most well known for their older, well maintained homes. Some people choose S. Euclid as they say the community has the amenites of both, but somewhat lower taxes. there are few older homes in S.Eucid though. University Heights is kind of a mixture of all the previous but most like S. Euclid. Based on what I have heard from residents, Euclid varies widely in quality/ type of housing and direction the neighborhood is going. You would need to take this on a case by case basis. Besides older homes are their any reasons that made you check these communities (ie you want to liver closer to an urban area?).
May 20, 200718 yr What sort of commute are you used to? I grew up in Euclid, and to get to Macedonia it would take about 40minutes without traffic, add traffic it would probably be an hour. I love Euclid, two of my brothers just bought houses there within the past 5 years. However, the city does have some rougher sections. If you are interested in Euclid, send me a message and I can give more specifics. Generally, along the lake, up on the ridge, and near Lake County is good, a half mile either way from the interstate, not so good.
May 21, 200718 yr I live in Euclid. Euclid is easy to get around the houses along the lake are great stock -- mixture of cottage style homes, older homes, new construction. The city itself is having some ups and downs. City services are good, Lakeshore Boulevard and north has a nicer stock of homes and parks. Many of the homes are part of "beach clubs" that are sort of like block clubs but they congregate activities around a private park that typically is along the lake at the end of two or three parallel streets. The advantage is the access to the lake. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to get downtown. Cleveland Heights, University Heights, and Shaker are good neighborhoods typically but in my opinion difficult to get around from/to. I travel to MI a lot on business, what part of MI are you relocating from?
May 21, 200718 yr For Macedonia, South Euclid will shave a bit off of your commute time compared to Cleveland Heights as it has closer access to 271. It has some interesting housing stock but most of it is 1950s stuff and it has a much more suburban feel than CH or SH which feel older and are generally more interesting. If your budget allows University Heights would be a good place to look. The self-proclaimed "City of Beautiful Homes" is sort of a transitional suburb from the older, tree-laden Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights to the wide open, unabashedly suburban Beachwood. UH also puts you closer to 271 highway access, shaving 5-10 minutes if shorter commute time to Macedonia is important.
May 25, 200718 yr what area of michigan are you from, and what area/neighborhood/city from michigan would you consider ideal? From that I can probably direct you to an area.
