August 6, 20186 yr Sad to hear there is such an increase in homelessness. Just speaking to downtown, I haven’t noticed any extreme increase in homeless people but obviously this is just s small area of the region. I am from California originally and was always amazed at how many homeless and mentally ill people are on the streets in downtown San Francisco. I was just reading several articles this week describing the absolute crisis they are facing right in the city center. Thousands of homeless or mentally ill persons shooting up drugs right in the streets, going to the bathroom, fighting, even murders all in “nice” tourist areas. I guess it’s the worst it’s ever been according to some. Even some conventions have canceled having events there due to the issues. I haven’t been back to downtown SF in years but I hope the problems here in Cleveland can be addressed before it gets to that point in the city center but like I said the problems here go way beyond what we see downtown... I just noticed the encampment is growing on the old Browns pedestrian bridge to the stadium. Doesn't seem to be a very hospitable place to camp out, but I guess when you're left with few options...

August 6, 20186 yr On it or under it? Right on it. If you are driving east on the Main Ave bridge and glance down over the retaining wall, you'll see the start of a tent city.
August 6, 20186 yr Coincidentally a friend of mine just listed a rental in the Lorain/Triskett neighborhood near George's Kitchen...he got 54 rental applications in a week. This is not a hot neighborhood by any means, these are working class families searching for a decent price and a fair landlord. How do restrictions on multifamily housing development factor into this problem? Outside of downtown and the near westside how many large apartment buildings were constructed in the last 15 years? It seems many suburbs have large buildings from the 60s and 70s but nothing more modern. I'm thinking of Myafield, Lakewood, Parma and North Olmsted. For the people in development and construction, am I off point here? There's been a decent number of new multi-family rentals in recent years along Cedar and Chagrin in the east suburbs. Other than Vue, there's been maybe 500-600 new units around Beachwood Place, a new complex on Park East, as well as Van Aken and Pinecrest coming on line now. These are all luxury rentals though, with rates similar to downtown - not much help to a single mother, or working family in quick need of a place to go.

FWIW NEOCH vans are usually there and DT Ambassadors are cleaning up these sites in the mornings. It seems like a lot more people than what was down at Irishtown Bend, there were only a few tents consistently down there in my adventures.
September 27, 20231 yr Homelessness/panhandling drives me crazy. So much so that l find it difficult to wrap my head around it. On one hand we have very little of it compared to so many other areas of the country. Anyone who thinks it's bad here has NOT experienced it in LA or SF. On the other hand, personally l find panhandling just annoying but l think homelessness is an affront to a civilized society. It shouldn't exist. We should be able to provide for people. But we don't and l think it's because we don't know what to do about the main causes which are addiction and mental illnesses. The scary thing is the numbers are growing. Many central cities around the US are overwhelmed by tent cities. In these places it feels like society is losing control and breaking down. That's depressing and frightening too. The problem is so big and the answers seem to be not forthcoming. I consider myself to be a thoughtful individual but in cases like this l find l'm just shutting down. I don't want to see it or think about it. That's certainly not the answer but l don't know what else to do.

September 28, 20231 yr Between the city and the county, plus special governments like CMHA, it would seem there's enough resources there to support more facilities for homeless shelters and mental health care that can direct people to either drug rehab programs or to mental hospitals as needed. I joined the clean up event held by the city yesterday to pick up trash and everything left behind in one of the encampments under the Abbey Ave bridge. The sheer amount of garbage was amazing.
