Posted May 23, 200718 yr Newark's downtown is huge in number of blocks, but you won't find many buildings over three stories. Tons of great small commercial buildings crowd the wide streets, but there are a number of vacant lots that distract from parts of the city. Overall, I liked Newark, but, like most cities, it needs help in some areas. I must have looked like an idiot taking these pictures. It was raining and I was carrying around a broken umbrella and snapping pics underneath it (while allowing myself to get soaked). The new Newark library could have done wonders for the Main Street streetscape; unforuntatley, however, it was built behind a parking lot. :-( Old jail? Newark has a simple, but cool arcade that actually has a few businesses left Old church hiding back there? Another abandoned post office! :x The school board sure did a nice job covering up the old lettering.

May 24, 200718 yr Nevermind the rain. That's an excellent tour. Newark has some good buildings, and I'm always amazed that Sullivan's Home Building Association has survived intact; it would be great to see the downtown make a comeback. It looks like they're trying to take care of what they have, and overall not too bad.
May 24, 200718 yr Thanks for the tour, rain and all. Newark definitely has a more "worn" look than I expected, but there are definitely plenty of gems in there.
