Cincinnati's DORA signage has no mention of the streetcar and Southbank Shuttle, but plenty of parking for your post game DUI-

you can get a DUI on one of those as well. But you can't on a Segway because of smart lobbying by that company.

That could explain the whole cliff incident.

I’m super confused...so this article explains that cranley wants to build a new park and freedom center memorial garden with statues and sculptures south of the freedom center plaza...is that the same area where the new Ferris wheel was supposed to go/future restaurants?

If so I’m confused and slightly disappointed. The banks doesn’t need more parks, nor more sculpture gardens for black history, especially if the freedom center already serves that purpose and exceeds in doing so.

Yeah I’m confused about the location as well, maybe it will take up only the space of the Ferris Wheel and not the restaurant site? No idea. I agree tho no more park space is needed down there. If they do build this I hope it has a unique unconventional design and not just grass, statues and benches

I doubt it takes the restaurant space, and a park with statues is a great idea.  It acts as an outdoor extension of the museum and enhances the public space. Also, they're closing Freedom way in front of the museum, meaning that's 2 blocks of Freedom way returned to the public.  I'm a fan.

Cranley held a press conference today to speak about his plans to use stimulus funding on local trails. He claims to have a contract ready to sign for construction of the Oasis Trail, which will allow the Banks to be directly connected to Lunken, off-street. He also happened to mention that money will be spent to extend the Smale Riverfront Park to Lot 23, the grass lot next to the new music venue, which will also be used for outdoor concerts at the venue.

Listening to it again for more details and he mentioned that the Smale expansion will cost $2.5 million. I think he misspoke as the list from the City Manager says it will cost $1.5 million, half split into the two years of the program.

It was streamed live on Facebook and Citicable. I can only see it on Facebook for now but I thought it should be archived on Citicable as well.

The city is looking to shut down Galla park and label is as a public nuisance for some events that occurred the past year.

The bar/club will be shut down for a year if the public nuisance is granted...

This smells like bs to me...especially when the bar “privileged” has shootings in the actual bar but remains open...don’t get me started about shell....seems like some personal gain going on here...

Yeah the complaints are very standard bar issues.  If this warrants shutting a place down then a ton of places could be shut down by the city.  Seems like a bad precedent to set, and definitely seems like someone with money/connections just wants them out.

The Banks appear to be getting painted over. While I don’t like the Walgreens quality brick, I also wouldn’t want to add the maintenance of painted brick if I was the owner, but it should be interesting to see what this stretch looks like when it’s all white/grey in the future. Hopefully it’s not too sterile with all the color getting painted over.

Pretty damning rebuke of the original design that it didn’t even last 10 years (first apartments opened in summer 2011). Hope the new owners know what they’re doing.

First concert at the outdoor stage of the ICON (not sure why the venue's name is in all caps since it's not an acronym) is scheduled for May 10th (EDIT: May 10th, 2022), featuring the band AJR (acronym for band members Adam, Jack, and Ryan): https://iconmusiccenter.com/concerts/2022/05/ajr-the-ok-orchestra-tour

I didn't realize the outdoor stage was completed (or close enough to begin hosting concerts in May). Anybody have photos showing it? I'll try to grab some photos next time I'm down there.

The banks have been ruined by this new Dora district in my opinion.

I was there last night and each bar had a least 45 minute to an hour line to get in and the street was just as crowded as new year eye in time square in nyc.

Just impossible to even get a beer let alone socialize and have fun with your group of friends just because of how crowded and loud and crazy it is now.

I never expected a place like Jefferson social or even tin roof to have a 1 hour line to get in...I know people are clamoring to get out again  and have fun again with Covid lifting but if this is the new norm than I will just hang out with friends at suburban bars at this point.

edit: I also don’t understand why the street car only runs till 11:30 at night...there were plenty of people waiting at stations only to realize that the street car doesn’t run anymore.

you would think the street would run at least till 1 if not 2:30am.

No one goes there anymore. It's too crowded. Seems like a good problem to have.

It’s good for businesses, don’t get me wrong...I’m happy things are turning upwards for them.. that said, I don’t know how it’s realistic for anyone to hang out there anymore on a weekend night.

I ate dinner at Jefferson Social Friday night. It was busy but there was no wait. We grabbed DORA beers after and walked around. I'm sure it got busier later but at 9pm it was fine.

It was a train wreck after you left I guess. I know I sound lame complaining about this, but I enjoyed going to some of the businesses there. Now it’s impossible to even get a beer.

Your pendulum shifts in opinion on urban life honestly crack me up. Weren’t you just recently talking about how you were so excited for nightlife crowds in OTR?

Sounds like we need more bars to accommodate increased traffic.  Hopefully this spurs progress on a mixed use building/micro-apartments that were proposed, but got Crancelled.

I am not complaining about night life crowds...Before when the banks was crowded it was on the side walk and it was much more organized to get from one establishment to another.

This on the other hand was just a chaotic disorganized mess with no room breathe let alone walk.

As what was mentioned above me it’s mainly because of how congested the bars are around there so it doesn’t give much opportunity to spread the crowd out further.

Yeah sounds like more places need to open up to thin out the crowd. That pad across from GE has been waiting to be developed for years. Someone needs to get on it.

Yeah that pad is wayyyyy overdue to built on, I remember reading that there was a solid plan and tenant for the buildout and then Corona happened and it was cancelled. But since things are rebounding so fast maybe they can flip a switch and bring it back. I believe it was a big bbq place out of Nashville (or something like that)

I'm still a little confused. There's more room to breath and walk now that you can walk in the street. People are spread out over a larger area. But either way, I hear you. I just think that the solution here is to develop more of the Banks so we can spread the crowd out.

And FWIW, it was a beautiful weekend, the Reds were at home, and people are still excited to get out and about after a year of nothing. So the crowds were probably bigger than an average weekend is going to be.

You would think there would be more room to walk and breathe but unfortunately it was packed like sardines.

I do think this is temporary to some extent. It’s a new feature and people are excited about checking out the Dora district. I imagine over some time it will thin out.

The Nashville BBQ place cancelled plans to expand into the Cincinnati Market. With this new park being built where the ferris wheel was suppose to go, i question if the restaurant pad will remain or disappear. Also there was conversation awhile back about Doc Crows opening up in the base of the Underground Railroad Museum, but that seemed to fade into the background.

Yeah I would love to see the rest of the pads built out.

I know it’s been a rough 2002, but I’m still not sure why some of these pads have remained vacant for so long.

I guess there is no urgency but you would think outside developers would take a stab at it? You would think the banks is an attractive enough area to entice developers to build there.

I think a lot of this is unique to the current situation. I mean even Kings Island had to close it's doors on Saturday due to hitting capacity and closed early because the crowds were so unruly and so many fights were breaking out. Things already get crazy when colleges/schools let out, the Reds are in town, weather is warm etc. then you add the new DORA aspect plus the amount of pent up demand after a year of quarantine and it's really unprecedented.

This is an example of Induced Demand. They removed space for vehicles and replaced it with space for people.

In any case, Cranley's Freedom Center park idea included closing that block off to vehicles as well, which will also help increase pedestrian demand.

PromoWest Pavilion has less announced acts than The Icon so far but there are 2 acts that they triple booked between Pittsburgh, Columbus and Newport. This was the major advantage of potentially going with PromoWest over MEMI.

AXS - The Bleachers

AXS - Lady A

There are however, 2 instances where bands are playing outside at PromoWest's venue in Columbus but indoors at the Icon down here.

Ticketmaster - Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats

Ticketmaster - Modest Mouse

Finished Photos and info about ICON Music Center, including a list of scheduled concerts.

They did a fabulous job, my gosh and the new concert lawn in relation to the venue is amazing.

https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2021/05/26/inside-look-icon-music-center-photos.html

It does look good and I think it will be a huge positive to bring additional people to the area for concerts and other events, especially in the slower winter months. Getting that pad south of Taste of Belgium  developed and creating a continuous grid will make it feel much more complete... A second hotel somewhere seems to make a lot of sense. The AC Hotel that is down there seems successful and it is not very large.

I am curious how the outdoor concerts will work. I get that the 'lawn' area is where most of the crowd will be but where are the musicians? Are they outside as well on some sort of temporary stage on the street podium overlooking the lawn? Or are they somehow tapping into the audio/visual from the interior?

As a side question, I really believe Cincy will eventually host a NFL draft, wouldn’t The Banks be the best location? The only thing is I’m not sure where the draft stage would or could be positioned down there, the stage seems to take up a ton of space and Mehring Way kinda splits the contiguous space. The other site I could picture is Union Terminal and that could be very interesting visually. I guess Sawyer Point could work but I think the other 2 options are better.

I believe there will be a temporary outdoor stage similar but better than the old Fountain Square Stage, it will be tucked in the corner

Edited by 646empire

Is the outdoor event "lawn" real grass or artificial turf? If they're going to book a lot of events, turf makes sense to avoid the inevitable mud pit that "grass" turns into after even a day or two of music festivals.

Context is important here. I am happy to see activity return. I’m upset when it’s so crowded you can’t barely move and can’t patronize the businesses there. The Dora district caused a disorganized mess.
