  • The view at night is a lot better than I expected. Looking forward to when those trees reach maturity.

Walked through the Black Music Hall of Fame. It's overall a nice addition to the banks. I just hope they can properly maintain all the cool interactive features. Each stand plays music from the artist

As anticipated, it was a little cramped. I could tell there were a lot of people without a decent view (normal I suppose?). We managed to land a good spot right at the start of the hill. I think the v

Where exactly are these holes that are being drilled, and why can't they been seen in these pictures?

Look closely!  They are there.  Very hard to see from 20 stories up and a 1/4 to 1/2 mile away.  A better shot of the drilled pier holes themselves would be from Mehring, Broadway, or 2nd St.

They don't have to excavate alot of dirt.  They just drill a shaft a little bigger in diameter than the rebar cage and then chuck the cage into the ground.  Then call in the concrete truck.

The Banks pursuing boutique hotel

Carter & Associates Commercial Services LLC and the Dawson Co., developers of The Banks project in downtown Cincinnati, are pursuing a boutique hotel for Phase 1B of the riverfront site and are putting plans for 100 condominiums on hold.

They are expanding like wildfire and who else is a better fit, bigger statement, and actually attainable? I could be wrong, but I sure wouldn't bet against it.

^ You read my mind.  A W Hotel would be my first choice.

I hope so, but it could also be a Kimpton product, or some other completely random brand since Boutique hotels are all the rage these days....

They will not be looking for a "random" brand at the riverfront splitting two of Cincinnati's biggest investments. They will be looking for a bold statement. It sets a tone, not just for the rest of the banks, but Cincinnati as a whole and brand familiarity will be key otherwise it will go unnoticed by most.

So with 120-200 rooms anyone care to speculate on height?

Is there any concern that the financing for this will still fall through?  Up in Cleveland, our half billion dollar Flats East Bank project has come to a screeching halt.

^ We haven't heard any rumblings of that

So with 120-200 rooms anyone care to speculate on height?

Hampton Inn Uptown Charlotte would be a good comparable. Urban format with structured parking. 11 Stories. 150 Rooms. It's a beige box, but you get the idea for height and scale.

Higher materials cost puts Banks $4M over budget

Local officials say they’re staying aware, not too worried

The long-awaited Banks riverfront development faces a $4 million budget shortfall before it even comes out of the ground.

Project Executive John Deatrick told Hamilton County officials that the infrastructure cost for the project’s first phase is expected to be between 4.5 percent and 5 percent higher than budget estimates made last year. That amounts to a $4 million gap, he said.

Way to go Ohio/Cincinnati.  Way to let the increasing price of materials make the project cost more.  Now you'll have to wait 10 more years for the Banks to start and maybe ill finally come Downtown....but ill certainly have to watch out for all the abandoned buildings and crime.  In Kentucky and outside of the City materials cost exactly what they did 50 years ago and projects never hit hurdles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,

Idiot Enquirer Reader.

Yeah, *cough* Museum Plaza which was put on indefinate hold due to costs and financing.

*cough* East End Bridge/Tunnel (Interstate 265) and Kennedy Bridge (Interstate 65) twinning, where the costs have increased from $1 billion total to $4 billion total in just ten years.

It's gotten to the point where I won't even go to Cincinnati.com. It's not just the format (which is still God awful), but the comments just make me in turns depressed, angry and bewildered. I'm hoping it's just the nuts coming out, because it would be really sad to think we live in a region with so many complete morons.

I guess if you write a newspaper to cater to morons you're going to have morons commenting on your articles......I'll just keep to the NY Times, WSJ and the Economist. Oh, and of course UrbanOH for any local news  8-)

Yeah, those comments from uninformed idiots are extremely trying on the patience.  Everyone has a right to an opinion, but you can tell that the commentors get ALL of their news from the crappy ass Enquirer, hence their once sided bias.

I also bet that some of the prices will come down as there is little to no construction work  (on the big scale) going to be happening in the next 12-24 months, which will drive down the total cost of the package due to the increased competition for the work.

Many already are. Unfortunately, at the same time some building mat. suppliers have gone out of business in the interim which had caused a hold up at Trinity Flats.

I noticed there were a few new cranes on site today.  Gradually more and more activity down there.

yeah if you check the webcam right now there are lights on

Beat me to it! This is getting exciting!

Someone wrote in to Mark Sheldon for the "Reds Mailbag"  on cincinnatireds.com and asked him if there were any planned development for the "lot" behind GABP. Mark replied back and briefly explained about the Banks. I thought it was pretty funny that the dude went about that way to find out information.

I didn't know that Museum Plaza has been suspended. That is VERY interesting. If anything this shows how dedicated and financially sound The Banks project really is.

Or rather it shows just how ridiculous Museum Plaza was.

One, TWO cranes

Has anybody noticed the drilling...seemingly similar in nature... closer to PBS?

So do they use some sort of electronic counter to pinpoint exactly where the holes should go? I've always wondered this.  It's gotta be mapped out somehow.

Has anybody noticed the drilling...seemingly similar in nature... closer to PBS?

just walked over to my boss's office to check.  there is a big crane that looks like it is drilling and a backhoe just west of the elevated portion of race street.

They are prepping the ground for Mike Brown and the future of the Bengals.

^to bury them.

Does anyone know when construction will begin on the Phase I garages?

the crane on the phase two side is drilling today

Awesome! Thanks for the update!

Dudes are tying together rebar, a fair amount of rebar on site.

From what I understand it is for Freedom Way.  They are extending it all the way across phase 1 and 2.  They need to complete it by a certain date to secure a perticular grant for the construction.  John Deitrick said they will be close! (That was from the last presentation on the Banks to City council)  Thats the last I heard unless someone else has more info!

This is where it starts to get good!

I had noticed that today.  I'm assuming that is right by PBS?  I saw they were drilling, but it seemed weird because the parking lot was still in tact, it was just one little area where they were drilling.

Watching the Banks construction is as fun as watching paint dry. (no offense, just a joke)

Updated: Lawsuit could delay Banks

By Jessica Brown • [email protected] • December 8, 2008

A crane company that was denied work on The Banks project despite being the lowest bidder is now suing Hamilton County and the three county commissioners.

Cincinnati-based AmQuip Crane Rental has filed a lawsuit in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court arguing its bid package of $419,162 was the lowest bid.

Nice to see Portune and Pepper responding so quickly and firmly

Those people on the comment reader section are complete morons. I don't think there is any hope.

What?  Any hope for the people or the project?

This is a silly story.  A non-issue really turned into something bigger than what it is.

The people, of course.
