The only proper historical name for it would be:

"The Bottoms"

Walked through the Black Music Hall of Fame. It's overall a nice addition to the banks. I just hope they can properly maintain all the cool interactive features. Each stand plays music from the artist

As anticipated, it was a little cramped. I could tell there were a lot of people without a decent view (normal I suppose?). We managed to land a good spot right at the start of the hill. I think the v

Alright, Roeblingville has been growing on me for the past few days!  I might have to re-vote for it.

not sure what you meant by that, but I'll take it as an insult!!

Seriously, that area was referred to as the bottoms.

Yeah, I like it too. Roebling is prominent and ville points to an area ... let's do it!

Of course, if the project is truly successful, people are just going to call it "Downtown" or the downtown riverfront. After all, the Banks is clearly within a close enough walking distance of Fountain Square to be considered the same basic neighborhood.

However, until they can cap the freeway, I guess there will still be a huge psychological barrier to a fully connected neighborhood.

Dude, lighten up!    Are you not aware of what a "" symbolizes?

I am well aware of what the history of this area is and I even posted that a page or two back.....

If you want to take it as an insult, so be it.  I'm not going to waste time on this thread explaining.

Unbunch your panties and get on with your day!

He's calling you a nelly bottom....so if anything its not an insult, its a compliment.  Geez....have to explain everything to the sheltered conservative type.

Hey dude!

An exclamation point signifies the same thing!!!!  I took it as a joke.  Lighten up Francis!

uh huh.  ok.   next time youre in the city, call me.

Could we call it "Ovation"?

Could we call it "Ovation"?

Ha! That would be awesome.

The Banks (at the Banks) is fine, and so is Freedom Way.  After all, blacks who made it to Cincinnati often were relegated to enjoying their freedom in tenement districts in the Bottoms, which is close to where the street is now.  Not to mention the museum...

I dunno, I'd much rather have it sound like an actual name of a neighborhood or if it's to be viewed as a Downtown district have "district" in it. And let's PLEASE not compare it to the Flats... have you seen it lately?

I wasn't saying the development is like the Flats. I was making poing regarding that it would not be weird to refer to the area as The Banks in casual conversation as some posters previously had mentioned. I used The Flats as an example b/c the names obviously are similar and therefore would also be similarly used in a sentence. My point was that if it works to call something "The..." in Cleveland than it can work in Cincinnati.

I know, I just hate to use the Flats and the Banks in the same sentence - like a jinx or something!

And I personally don't like the Flats.  It sounds like purely an entertainment district rather than a living area.  Purely entertainment districts come and go.  True neighborhoods with a strong entertainment-oriented business base (Mt. Adams) experience much more long-term success.  I think the Banks (Roeblingville!) needs to achieve a true neighborhood status in order for long-term viability.

Just because it's adjacent to a stadium doesn't mean that it's due for longtime success (see Baltimore, Jacobs Field, etc.)

While I have heard of the Flats, I'm not at all familiar with it.  What happened to it?  What went wrong?  Is there a lesson in the Flats for the developers of the Banks?

The Flats isn't dead at all; in fact it can be a pretty good time.  However, it has several issues such as crime and vacancy that we don't want on the Ohio.

The Flats was more of an entertainment district than a mixed use area, which is what it is supposed to redevelop as if money ever comes available again.  The reason it failed was more to do with underage drinking, people drowning in the river, and all sorts of other bad things that can happen when alcohol and water are involved.  I dont think the banks will have a similar atmoshere at all.

More green from feds, more green at BanksBusiness Courier of Cincinnati - by Dan Monk Senior Staff Reporter

A proposal submitted to city and county officials in late February indicates that Atlanta developers Carter and the Dawson Co. want to add sustainability features to the project’s first phase if additional funding is made available.

The project is already hoping to achieve “certification” status from the U.S. Green Building Council, the lowest of four ratings offered under the council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

If they don’t give us the full amount, we’ll just move down the metallurgical chart.

My inside sources indicate a new set of renderings will be completed for the developer soon.  Whether those are released to the public i dont know.  From what i can tell...architecturally speaking...prepare to feel about the same.  The rendering quality should be vastly improved but from what i understand the whole things is kind of last minute.

I think I can see Ovation going up in the background! :-D

What is phase 2 of the transit center?

since they are currently extending freedom way for phase 1, i would imagine they are going to do the same for phase 2, which would be too close to the existing theodore berry way.  Also, if I'm not mistaken, I think they are curving mehring way north a bit to open up the park to the river, which would then also be too close to the current tmb way.  So apparently removing this road is the first step before creating the others.

Great photos jmecklenborg! You ought to spam the Equirer's message board with links to those photos next time some idiot complains that the Banks is a "mud pit."

It's funny because we all remember when this first started and we saw the two bulldozers down there.  People started getting all worked up saying there wasn't enough machinary.  Look at it now and it has taken a complete 180 haha.

I was just down there and people acted like this project would never ever happen.  I don't think they realized it already is happening.

well I think so many people around here were jaded of the fact that the city and hamilton county would never cooperate in anything.  I think it's safe to say we're in the clearing but I kind of understand there negative views to an extent.  The people who deny it will happen right now are people that like to see things fail because they themselves never experience success lol.  The reason I like Mallory is because he ignores the naysayers.  Looks like it's paying off;)

Got a new camera so had to try it out.  Tried to get different angles of the site than what has already been posted.  Enjoy

Awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I still cant believe there is actual construction going on there. I have to pinch myself every time I look over from the interstates.

Best shots yet!

Aerial shots of our city will be much sweeter now;) no more dinosaur excavation pit lol.

Man this is nuts.  I can't believe there's construction going on down there.  All those columns look weird though. I like the pictures.  It looks like Cincinnati is alive again with all those cranes around!

If the project suddenly haulted it would look mighty weird down there. LOL

^Not a chance!

Nothing says springtime like Reds baseball and riverfront construction! :)

The Banks Project Moves Forward

POSTED: 6:50 am EDT March 24, 2009

UPDATED: 7:19 am EDT March 24, 2009

The developers of The Banks Project will unveil some design changes today.

The changes will be made to the first phase of the project...

From my office vantage point in Atrium II, you can see that the current construction going on in the northern section is different than the parking deck portions that have been stretched across the site on the Freedom Way path.  There are walls going up, and different foundations and infrastructure than that which was laid for the basic parking deck sections.  Obviously this is necessitated by what is going in above the northwest quadrant (office building).  But it is interesting to see something slightly more exciting than a forest of concrete columns.

Things are also active up on the section immediately east of the Roebling entrance, which I guess is Ted Berry Way.  They are definitely doing a lot of excavation work up there, with a couple pieces of heavy equipment doing the digging. Also looks like sewer pipes going in. South of this spot will be where the park begins, although I am still unclear as to how the re-route of Mehring Way figures in.  Plans look to have it looping northward and going under the bridge ramp.

Interesting... I haven't received a email from the Carter-Dawson update system nor is this on any other local news outlet. How'd WLWT only get the scoop?

Any word on this yet?
