I'm wondering.  Since they've started building the pilons between bengals stadium and the freedom center, couldn't they just use that huge parking lot as the base ground floor for the garage? it's pretty much level already right?

That is the first floor of below grade parking.

Is the plan to complete Freedom Way this year?  Work is under way on the block closest to the Bengals stadium, and obviously between Walnut and Main, but not between Vine and Race.  If there is no plan to begin the parking garages west of the Freedom Center, why spend the money to extend Freedom Way?

Because the bids are coming in lower than expected due to the bad economy and contractors looking for work.  Material costs are also down as a result of the global economic downturn...making these improvements now makes cents long-term.  The streets can easily be built and filled in later with parking decks and buildings on top of that.  This is exactly what was done at Atlantic Station in Atlanta and they are still plugging in the pieces to that puzzle today - and it works fine.

This is ironic.  Out of all the city arguing, all of the bad vibes we've gotten from the Banks all these years, we couldn't ask for it to be built at a better time lol.

Banks Project Finally Rising Above Street Level

If you haven't taken a look at Cincinnati's riverfront lately, you may be surprised as The Banks Project passes a major visual milestone Wednesday morning.     

 

For the first time, crews began constructing some of the underground parking garage structures that will make up the base of The Banks grow above ground.

Since this is already a "shovel ready" project, there are questions over whether it is eligible for any of the federal stimulus money expected to start flowing into the Queen City.

 

If the fact that the Banks has already broken ground prevents it from qualifying for federal stimulus money, maybe some aspects of the project that are only proposed will be able qualify.  It would be great if federal stimilus money could be used to pay for the decks over FWW.  Looking at those arial photos above and imagining what the final poduct will look like it is very clear that the decking over FWW is absolutely critical to integrating the Banks with the rest of downtown.

Interesting to see, in the fourth image or so on the WCPO website, the more complicated footing excavation for foundation work at the areas eventually to support buildings.  Looks kind of like an archaeological dig...but all they have found so far is re bar.

It would be cool if a large archway was built on the west end of Freedom Way at the entrance to PBS as a sort of front door to the stadium.  A person could stand in the middle of Freedom Way and looking west into the entrace to PBS and turn 180 degrees around and look east into an entrance to GABP.

The first phase is under construction and funded.  So this would not prohibit stimulus funds from flowing to infrastructure work for later phases, or the completely separate FWW decking.  Garage work for the later phases would seem to be a relatively good use of stimulus funds as it will create jobs, is shovel ready and is a prominent local project.

CINCINNATI -- Hamilton County says it's ready to spend whatever money it can get from the federal stimulus plan.

 

County Commission President David Pepper released a report Wednesday detailing the projects that the county has requested funding for from the Ohio Federal Stimulus Initiative Web site.

 

Among the projects with price tags attached:

 

$306 million to accelerate the Banks project, including $100 million to fund the covering of Fort Washington Way for green space purposes

$6 million for the Ancor Connector, designed to improve connectivity between State Route 32 and Broadwell Road in Anderson Township

$4.4 million for repair and resurfacing of 7,100 feet of Galbraith Road

Banks project takes step forward

Work started today on the first part of The Banks development that's above ground.

 

For months, site preparation and foundation work has been under way in a block south of Second Street between Main and Vine streets. This morning, workers started pouring concrete for the development's first elevated slab. The slab also will serve as an intermediate parking deck below Freedom Way, the road that will link all phases of the development together.

Dmerkow your absolutely right.  Funny thing is, (if you believe in fate) it's like Cincy wasn't supposed to have The Banks until right now.  Out of all the infighting, all the bickering, stalls, bad ideas, it's happening at the best time that it could.  I aint complaining.

wow, if they are able to get funding for the fww caps, that would be incredible.  With all the other projects going on, getting around to those was not much more than an afterthought. 

 

With the construction of freedom way between main and walnut, what are the chances of them implementing the tracks for the streetcar now as they build the road?  Would be completely wasteful to have to do it later, especially when it could be in the very near future.

I'm really hoping they can execute a marina somewhere between the stadiums on the OH side.

I thought the same thing. In one of the renderings though, there looks like what appears to be a marina closer to GABP area.

Yeah, I think the park plans include a small docking area though I don't know if I'd call that a marina. Maybe a small dock is acceptable but not a larger, protected sort of harbor.

A marina was drawn in near PBS where the gravel place is now.  Don't know when or if that will ever happen, but it was set into the land to avoid any congestion in that narrow stretch of the Ohio River.

Yeah, that's what I heard as well (probably back in this thread somewhere).  They apparently do really well there, they have quick connections to everything..  river, every highway, rail.  It's a prime location so I understand why they wouldn't want to move.  Keeping the last bit of industry on the riverfront is a bit nostalgic to me, anyways.  I like it.

"The Bottoms" is going to make a comeback. I can see it now. I like the Banks. Why mess with it

The Banks is an ok name, but none of the other new options really stand out at all, hmm...

Banks or Bottoms!  IMO

I always thought it should be called the Bottoms for historical reasons, but develpers probably dont like the negative connotations associated with that name.  Like naming a subdivision "Sudden Valley" (arrested development joke).

Those potential names suck as much as The Banks. No reason to change it if you're not going to tie it to Cincinnati. The Bottoms is my vote.

 

edit: The Bottoms would be my vote if I wasn't forced to choose between a variety of generic suburban sounding development names.

In case anyone doesn't know what's going on...you can vote on a new name for "The Banks" or keep it as it is.  You can do so by going to www.carterdawson.com and voting for the next 2 weeks.

 

I went with "Park District" because I could see it people refering to it as the Park District of Downtown Cincinnati.

maybe not specifically historical to the spot but moreso historically significant to the city as a whole...

 

such as, Losanti______

Losantiflats, Losantiquarter, Losantiward, or hell even Losantiville itself might work...

 

But I agree, should be more unique, this isn't a development in Mason
