Perhaps, just maybe, if this is successful, it may show other retailers that the residency volume is there to support everyday retail needs.... and maybe, just maybe, it will convince Target or similar to fill a void and finally get Millenial tower.... or mini millenial built....

We already have Walmart in the Short North.  Bonobos.

I mean, perhaps technically, but still, Ohio has not seen a Walmart Neighborhood Market yet. It might be a natural step up from Dollar general. Although if Walmart ever does decide to break out the neighborhood market model in Ohio, it will undoubtably be in a suburb like they have in Charlotte rather than the urban model like Chicago.

Just as a little preview of what we might be able to expect.  I mean, I'll take this model well over the usual Dollar General store.  It's a start and at least will provide basic needs to the area I suppose.  I'm sure the prices are much better of course than the CVS a few blocks away at High and Main.

Mini-Grocer Opening at Highpoint on Columbus Commons

The Highpoint on Columbus Commons is finally getting the mini-grocer that Robert Weiler Company VP Alex Marsh says has long-been a goal for the apartment community.

But it’s coming from a company many would not expect at a luxury apartment community.

DGX, a new concept from Dollar General, is headed for 6,200 square feet of space at 166 S. High St.

I wouldn't be so sure of the better prices. Regular dollar stores are often criticized for their tiny item sizes and quantities relative to their cost. Yes, the item is $1 instead of $3.50, but you only get 1/8 the amount of the product. I don't know how DGXs compare to regular dollar stores in this respect.

That is still preferable for the core demographic that lives downtown. Most people are single, and almost nobody has any children. As a result, buying smaller versions of products is preferable as it takes up less space, less of the product goes to waste, and it's easier to carry for a few blocks back to your apartment/condo.

Oh I often like it better that way as well but a lot of cost cutters don't.

Yea I understand. Most people living downtown (at least around the commons) are not cost cutters though so I don't think it will be a big deal.

I did not know there was this sort of "a step up" version of Dollar General. It does make a difference I guess. I just cannot stand the regular Dollar General stores. Maybe this will work in that space if there is a need for it.

The DGX is open now.  Went inside and it's pretty nice.20200110_185435.thumb.jpg.d0f0e0b42583840bd7c9d9c33f06f9de.jpg

A welcome addition to downtown.

It's being picky but I don't believe the frosted window section should have been approved that way. That should have been facing the side windows IMO.

I agree. These need to be razed. In addition, the commons are far from finished. All of these areas need activation, starting most importantly with the stage. That needs moved/pushed foward, with a new building in the back. Could be townhomes/condos/or small apartments. On the right side, some sort of small plaza/kiosk style development needs to occur, including a restaurant like at the fountain where the garage access is. These should be built in classical styles as well to ensure lasting character. Most importantly, its time we bring a wrecking ball to the useless garage and build a proper arcade with attached hotel. The commons are a good start but look unfinished due to these heavily underutilized areas.
