Welcome to University Circle. Home to: Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, University Hospitals, Lakeview Cemetery, Little Italy, blah blah blah.

About 550 Acres if I remember, of which the University takes up about 135.

Also home to my alma mater and other happy memories like that.

For temporary trailers, its a bad sign when a) they have addresses, and b) they've been there for at least 8 years.

The view from the monument is one of my favorite Cleve skyline views.

Those temporary trailers at UH have been there at least since 1996 - when I got hired there, that was where you went to get your employee ID photo taken - great first impression!  (Worse than that, there's an aluminum trailer-like building on the University of Toledo campus that was built as a temporary structure in 1965 to house the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and it's still there, albeit now known as the Student Classroom Annex)

Easily the best skyline shot of Cleveland is from that UH garage/McKinley Monument direction.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

That's obviously the view of Cleveland's skyline, so it always baffles me that it's such a rarely used shot.

Easily the best skyline shot of Cleveland is from that UH garage/McKinley Monument direction.

and figures it took someone from dayton to show me the view from the rainbow garage.

pathetic.

i always thought the skyline view from the water was the best, but really that one is because you can get a lot more stuff in the foreground.

thx esp for showing the art museum, i was very curious to see how that is coming along. seems to look good so far, but it is kind of hard to tell yet.

otoh, if i never see a damn gehry rerun again fine.

Where is that street with character?  Never heard of a street out of wood.

Hessler Ct. Just hidden from the intersection of Ford and Bellflower.

A wood road.. don't see too many of those anymore..

i used to basically live on that quiet hidden street.  east 115th was (is?) a cia party epicenter.

^close enough in my book. What was the make-up of the street? (demographic/employment/student wise?)

^mostly cia and cim students, and a metal band.  there was at least one family with children.  the houses are all owned by UCI.

Its only been three years, and i'm still waiting for the cranes.

uni%20062.jpg

...  only at the behest of the gods of Hessler Court.

i dont know how many CIA houses are left on that block, Skeleton Witch is gone... maybe 1 or 2 are still... which on an unrelated note i saw one of skeletonwitch's stickers on a bike when i was in Brooklyn, NY a few weeks ago...

"still to this day, the ugliest building on the face of this earth (sorry lubrizol family)"

If so, only because they tore down Pardee (yech).

George Will once said that building a stadium to house both football and baseball was like building a structure to be both a library and a foundry.  I had to laugh when I read that, because White Building (where I spent a lot of time) was both.

Good call on the Euc, during the early to mid 80s there was literally nothing else around, except the Olive Tree (mostly a Greek Hangout) and "The Spot" (imagine an attempt at designing a college bar conducted entirely by a committe of student-government geeks).

i'm prettty sure the spot is still there below fribley.

The only thing the spot had going for it was 1 dollar beers and 10 cent wings any day it was actually open.

other than that, boo.

I thought it was up the elephant stairs in Carlton, though I could be wrong it's been entirely more years than I care to think about.

I only lived on campus three semesters anyway, I was sick a lot and when I quit eating PFM (stood for Pretty F***ing Miserable) and started eating at home again that stopped.

Hey old folk ;)

The Spot is on Northside, below Leutner and still has cheep beer and wings.  About 3 or four years ago it was a good scene (for campus) but rapidly declined and now draws a ...... special ...... crowd

At the top of the Elephant Stairs is the Rough Rider Room - same as the Spot except less people, less selection, less food

But they have 75 cent drafts on Mondays :)

fribley, leutner, they all blew.

Thank you for using past tense..... it's a different story now - I miss them to an extent

^mostly cia and cim students, and a metal band.  there was at least one family with children.  the houses are all owned by UCI.

Correction: UH owns the houses and UCI manages them.  They are quite fetching!

The Euc' is on it's way back.  It's going through design review right now.

And if you're not a fan of trailers, brace yourselves, there are quite a few more coming to the UH campus in the near future...

BTW, you never did tell us why there aren't any more brick streets in Cleveland, Pope!

Thanks for all the great pics!  It's nice to see the place from someone else's eyes for a change.

^oh, no more wood streets because of flammability issues and how damn quickly a fire could spread on them literally across blocks.

(that's what I've always been told)

does the design review include the inside too?

Because if it does, I wont be going.

design review is exteriors only, but I'd venture to guess that they'll be doing a significant amount of interior work as well.  You'll probably hate it, but all the people who never set foot in the old 'Euc will love it!

I figured that was the story with the bricks... I just thought you might have a clever tale up your sleeve and that no one took the bait.

Now THIS is how single-family home neighborhoods should be built!  What a fantastic little street.

uni%20081.jpg

In the past couple of years i've seen a number of decent shows at the spot (enon, jjmagazine...)

^Gym Class Heroes & Andrew W.K. each put on good shows too

oh Andrew K, you've come so far from Ann Arbor.........

Nice tour.  Missed it before . . .

Now THIS is how single-family home neighborhoods should be built!  What a fantastic little street.

And yet it's had to fight for survival against University Hospitals' desire to demolish the homes for more parking decks and stuff.

Indeed.

Too bad our building tendency is quite the opposite. -_-

Wonderful thread!  I missed this before...

Me, too! I can't believe the Euclid Tavern is closed!! My heart is completely and instantaneously saddened.

Any plans to revive that place?? That bar is as Cleveland as Cleveland bars come.

It closed several years ago, but I've heard that someone is working on reopening it.

Sweet!

It's reopening was discussed in this thread, a few messages back.

Are you f$%^ing serious?! If those homes were on the east side of Cincinnati they'd go for over 400k. I love victorian farmhouses!!! Those houses are beautiful. That's how houses with siding should be done!

I agree. They're incredibly gorgeous. UH would be insane to bulldoze those houses. Or anyone else, for that matter.

E 116th, just south of the new dorms on the CWRU campus

Nice campus and I like the neighborhood. How many miles east is it of downtown again?

Nice campus and I like the neighborhood. How many miles east is it of downtown again?

about five miles.

Currently connected to downtown by the Red Line (Heavy) and soon to be connected by the Silver Line (BRT, 2008)

p.s.  the building you refer to as Hannah Hosp is actually Lakeside.  i used to work on the 3rd floor.    Hanna is the bldg immediately to the left when viewing it from Adelbert.

since this opened up again recently, I thought I'd mention that the Euc's exterior is coming along nicely.  Have a drive/ride/walk by and see for yourself.  Or you can wait for my lazy butt to bring the camera out next time!
