That means that each of the units in that elevator bank are different, BUT the series of units (in that line from floor 1 upward, example unit a will be the same from floor 1 to 10) are essentially the same. Look at the floor plates.

I am thinking of going back there with my camera and doing some nice shots from the upper-floor balconies and the roof, if anyone else is interested...

June 24, 200816 yr I think a lot worked out in Liebeskind's favor with this building that he could not have anticipated. The context is so strange that there is hardly any clear view of the building and there doesn't appear to be a single dominant view of the building. People wanted it to be taller but the fact that it's about the same hight as the Rivercenter towers and is hard to see is part of what makes it work. I really think it raises the bar and demands that whoever builds the next residential tower down there needs to build something great, and the Ascent gives another architect a lot to bounce off of contextually. Really I haven't been around another new building that causes people to constantly look at it like this one and I think it's because the mind has a hard time actually figuring out the shape. Also the exterior materials appeared cheap when it was being built but for some reason it looks great now.

July 19, 200816 yr What's funny is a guy hired me to take photos of his office in Covington from the bridge. He did a great job renovating a historic building but he hates The Ascent. So I can't have The Ascent in any of the shots. That means I just "grabbed" some shots of it and sometime in the future I'll have to go back and concentrate on it. The tough thing too is time is very limited when you are granted access to the bridge tower and you have to deal with whatever mother nature throws at you. Luckily today was clear and this guy likes clear straightforward photos. This view shows the parking lot on the left side of the bridge approach that's itching for a midrise or tower. For those of you less familiar with this area, this is the lot I'm talking about when I speculate about what comes next being able to react to The Ascent. And the dull 8~ floor building peaking out from behind The Ascent is the Kenton County Jail, which I believe is being moved so that site can be redeveloped.
July 19, 200816 yr This month I have been scanning my my "1998" binder full of negatives and today I happened upon these: View of the Catch & Four restaurant, which was torn down to make way for The Ascent: I couldn't remember what was there before the Roebling Row condos, and the answer is nothing. Or most likely some nice 1800's town homes were torn down to make way for those lots: View of the dreadful IRS complex to the west: View of the NK Convention Center, which was brand-new that year:
July 19, 200816 yr The white building in the middle of the Roebling Row picture is the Amos Shinkle townhouse. It is (was) a B&B, owned by NKY politician Bernie Moorman. It was among the first places off of Riverside Drive to be renovated in the 1980s. We used to chill there before heading down to the fireworks.
July 20, 200816 yr I know that many here really detest surface parking lots, but they are providing some of the best opportunities for redevelopment at the moment due to their lower cost (minimal demolitions) and size. I can't wait for the parking lot next to the Ascent to be redeveloped!
July 20, 200816 yr ^My biggest problem with surface lots (and that god-awful IRS building, which might as well be a surface lot) is what was lost to create them. If lots were always there, that would be one thing, but I hate seeing pictures of buildings that were "in the way". Cincy and Covington are still pretty dense, but nothing like they used to be. The whole Covington riverfront used to be a neighborhood, but now it's just parking lots, the IRS building, and a couple of fast food places.

I cannot count the number of times I've heard people mention that the Ascent is a failed project and is empty and desolate, yet it has 50 families. While it may not be the most exciting addition to the streetscape, given that its environ is all but desolate after work hours anyways, it is still a bold and striking addition to an otherwise mundane skyline for Covington.
