"Two elevator cores lead to the condominium units, each with a different floor plan."

That means that each of the units in that elevator bank are different, BUT the series of units (in that line from floor 1 upward, example unit a will be the same from floor 1 to 10) are essentially the same. Look at the floor plates.

>I just wonder is it functional?

My mom says it looks unsafe.

I hope the glass at the top survives 1-2 inch size or larger hail stones.

Has any forumer been in the building?

I just wonder is it functional?

A Daniel Libeskind designed building being functional?  Surely you jest.

Has any forumer been in the building?

Yes, I was in it after my interview @ RiverCenter last week. I actually told them I was interested in a unit with a view of DT Cinci, and the prices are... very expensive for that. The building is very, very nice on the inside, and the views are unbeatable. I am thinking of going back there with my camera and doing some nice shots from the upper-floor balconies and the roof, if anyone else is interested...

Fantastic - great shots!

wild shots! i was kinda waiting for those angles from you & of course you delivered the goods so thx.

Anyone know if the skyline is larger than the Lexington skyline now? Interesting that one of the rivercenter, if it were all glass would look just like Lexington's highest(5/3 building).

West Chester has a bigger skyline then Lexington.

I think unusualfire means NKY vs Lexington, not Cincinnati vs. Lexington.

If you're talking all of Nky then if it isn't bigger than Lexington already it will be within a few short years.  Louisville won't be far behind.

Louisville already has a larger skyline than Lexington.  And also, Lexington does have a 400 footer so it'll have a "taller" skyline than Covington for a bit.

boo ya! i am loving your attempts to find the best angles. i'm also glad you kept those cooki cutter outer loop-ish omnicare buildings mostly out of the pics this time.

I'm kinda loving this building.  I wish I could see the inside of a unit.

I think a lot worked out in Liebeskind's favor with this building that he could not have anticipated.  The context is so strange that there is hardly any clear view of the building and there doesn't appear to be a single dominant view of the building. People wanted it to be taller but the fact that it's about the same hight as the Rivercenter towers and is hard to see is part of what makes it work.  I really think it raises the bar and demands that whoever builds the next residential tower down there needs to build something great, and the Ascent gives another architect a lot to bounce off of contextually.  Really I haven't been around another new building that causes people to constantly look at it like this one and I think it's because the mind has a hard time actually figuring out the shape.  Also the exterior materials appeared cheap when it was being built but for some reason it looks great now.

Even more:

WOW  Great photos.  How did you do that?

What's funny is a guy hired me to take photos of his office in Covington from the bridge.  He did a great job renovating a historic building but he hates The Ascent.  So I can't have The Ascent in any of the shots.  That means I just "grabbed" some shots of it and sometime in the future I'll have to go back and concentrate on it.  The tough thing too is time is very limited when you are granted access to the bridge tower and you have to deal with whatever mother nature throws at you.  Luckily today was clear and this guy likes clear straightforward photos.

suspension-904.jpg

This view shows the parking lot on the left side of the bridge approach that's itching for a midrise or tower.  For those of you less familiar with this area, this is the lot I'm talking about when I speculate about what comes next being able to react to The Ascent.  And the dull 8~ floor building peaking out from behind The Ascent is the Kenton County Jail, which I believe is being moved so that site can be redeveloped.

This month I have been scanning my my "1998" binder full of negatives and today I happened upon these:

View of the Catch & Four restaurant, which was torn down to make way for The Ascent:

ascent-502.jpg

I couldn't remember what was there before the Roebling Row condos, and the answer is nothing.  Or most likely some nice 1800's town homes were torn down to make way for those lots:

ascent-501.jpg

View of the dreadful IRS complex to the west:

ascent-503.jpg

View of the NK Convention Center, which was brand-new that year:

ascent-504.jpg

The white building in the middle of the Roebling Row picture is the Amos Shinkle townhouse. It is (was) a B&B, owned by NKY politician Bernie Moorman. It was among the first places off of Riverside Drive to be renovated in the 1980s. We used to chill there before heading down to the fireworks.

I know that many here really detest surface parking lots, but they are providing some of the best opportunities for redevelopment at the moment due to their lower cost (minimal demolitions) and size.

I can't wait for the parking lot next to the Ascent to be redeveloped!

^My biggest problem with surface lots (and that god-awful IRS building, which might as well be a surface lot) is what was lost to create them.  If lots were always there, that would be one thing, but I hate seeing pictures of buildings that were "in the way".  Cincy and Covington are still pretty dense, but nothing like they used to be.  The whole Covington riverfront used to be a neighborhood, but now it's just parking lots, the IRS building, and a couple of fast food places.

Living well at the Ascent at Roebling's Bridge

http://www.soapboxmedia.com/devnews/60ascent.aspx

Daniel Libeskind's dramatic addition to the Covington skyline, the Ascent, is celebrating its one year anniversary. In that year, over 50 families have moved into the sweeping blue luxury tower.

In addition to the striking views, the Ascenti, a moniker residents have proudly adopted for themselves, have discovered additional benefits to living in one of the most important architectural statements in Northern Kentucky – a sense of community. Regular events such as the Wine Club gatherings held in a Libeskind designed wine cellar help neighbors in the glass building bond. The building also has its own set of Yoga and Pilates classes held in the 2,600-square-foot wellness suite complete with private massage room and state-of-the-art cardio and resistance equipment chosen by local celebrity trainer, Aaron Lakanen.

The building even boasts its own private driver, John Callahan, who can be seen ferrying passengers around in the building's midnight blue stretch Lexus. "I have a great job," said John. "I get to help make life easy for some really nice people. Whether it is helping get a business trip started off with ease or taking a couple out for a special night on the town, I really enjoy what I do."

Well that's the most obnoxious thing I'm likely to hear today...

Sounds like the "illuminati" or something equally stupid

It's good to hear the Ascent is doing well and has sold enough units to be a viable project. I cannot count the number of times I've heard people mention that the Ascent is a failed project and is empty and desolate, yet it has 50 families. While it may not be the most exciting addition to the streetscape, given that its environ is all but desolate after work hours anyways, it is still a bold and striking addition to an otherwise mundane skyline for Covington.

I like it too. I think this is a sweet tower.

Who have you talked to that is saying Ascent is a failure?

.. is there anybody .... who knows the costs of this ASCENT Covington Kentucky building from Libeskind ?

Wiki says about 50 million. I live across the street from this building and it is pretty neat to look at it. Lots of glass and

the views have to be outstanding. The balconies..................those kind kinda scare me.

Are all the units sold? If  they have why haven't they build another tower?

There are maybe 5-7 ? that have not been sold or finished, more so on the higher end, above 2 Million.

Ha.  This photo was taken in the middle of the 2008 financial crisis.  Look at the high gas prices, but then the sale of a disposable camera:

It appears that several of the highest-priced units have still never sold.  Or perhaps an investor bought them but has failed to resell them:

WOW $3721 HOA for that first unit. Good luck selling that.

Yeah.  The views must be great, but I don't think there is a market for $5.5M condos in greater Cincinnati, let alone with a $3721/month HOA.

You'd almost have to be a pro athlete to afford that

Those links are broken but the "developer" (did the developer give the bank some control of these units in exchange for not calling the construction loans?) is now trying to sell 8 of the highest-price units that have never been occupied...I heard this "event" advertised on 700WLW today:
