I really like the Ascent's design.  It is unique and I really dig the swoosh.

In fashion like all the naysayers, I'm going to place all my bets on this sucker collapsing in five years. Look how cheap it is! Panels! Glass! Roof! Cincinnati has 10000x better buildings!

IT'S RIDICULOUS!

I'm sensing some KY animosity.

yea I like it.  I didnt think I would but I think it looks sharp.  I dunno, whatever, its cool guys, its cool.  Just as long as were cool were OK.

at least they get things done..or do you want northern kentucky to sit back and squabble over money for years and years.

I really like the Ascent. I think its DARING, BOLD and PROVOCATIVE.  It certainly catches your eye and commands your attention. I can't wait until it is finished as and appears to  "soar" against a backdrop of a sparsely cloudy blue sky.  Cincinnati will then be the home of the flying pig and the floating building. What other region can claim that distinction?

It's turn-of-the-century retro trash with a Starchitect's name attached.  It'll either be appreciated for its "boldness" in 30 years or utterly ashamed (i.e. Rhodes Tower, Columbus) by the architecture community.

How is it retro?

Look at it.  It screams "A Tornado Hit This And This Is All We've Got Left."  Think Space Mountain, minus the fun part.

^I think once they finish covering the building it will have less of that post disaster feel.

You better learn to appreciate quality architecture when you see it.

This building looks incredible from rookwood overlook in mt adams.  It really makes the skyline super modern.  Build more in different shapes and colors!

^ Definitely.

The positioning is fantastic. I just saw for the first time coming down 71 into downtown and the way it sit off to the side of the P&G towers is quite breathtaking. It really does seem to add some real spice to the view from that angle.

It is also just such a vast improvement over the river mud red buildings Corporex built first. It helps the 75 view as well.

Just noticed the tower crane is gone.

They took it down saturday.

I dont get why people on this board are so down on the Ascent.  I think it does alot for the Covington skyline and the fact that it is set back a block from the riverfront gives downtown Covington some depth.  I like that is looks totally different depending upon what angle you are looking at it.  Check it out next time you are heading south on the Brent Spence.  From that vantage point you can really get a good view of the extreme lines of the building.

I also don't understand what seems to be an almost united front against the Ascent...and I don't think I have ever been confused for being a Nky champion or anything.

Yeah, this is weird. I think the building is pretty sensational.

Same here. But I've noticed there seems to be a united front against building projects in general for Northern Kentucky.

yea I like it too.  Seems like theres a lot of us who like it....

To be honest...many of the Nky building projects are just bad projects.  But I do like what Covington has been doing with their projects.  Newport, Dayton, Belleview are different stories though.

The Ascent is (IMO) the first real 21st century tower we have built in the ORV.        Keep em coming!

I totally agree.  I'm not saying that I'm in love with every decision made on the KY riverfront, but at least they're developing something.  I remember what those neighborhoods were like when no one built anything in Covington and Newport, and I'll take this recent influx of projects any day.  At least it's dynamic and could lead to more redevelopment and bring people back into the urban core.  For that matter, it's not like Cincinnati hasn't taken its fair share of missteps.  As long as you keep developing and growing instead of stagnating, it will work itself out.  But I think what we're seeing here is just part of the mental divide that plagues this region.  It's a river people, not an ocean.  What happens in KY affects Ohio and vice versa, hopefully in a good way.  I do actually like the Ascent a lot, though, just for the record.

Oh, and I'm not trying to bang on Ohio people here.  I know plenty of Kentuckians who have been laughing about the stadiums, The Banks, and OTR forever, so it goes both ways.  I just think it's important for this region to become a little more inclusive than we are right now, espcially the urban areas that will either thrive or falter together.

I have nothing against Kentucky.  I just think the tower is hideous.  That's all.

Well I was waiting for someone else to say it.  The shape of the building is nice, rather sweeping, but the hieght in my eyes does not fit the shape.  If it were about 10 stories taller, I could see it.  The building looks short and pudgy though.  I guess I think it is hideous also.  The curtain wall isn't really attractive either.  It seems as though it will become dated rather quickly.  The main benifit however is more residents in DT Cincy and thats nothing to frown at.

To see a building built in that shape with masonry materials (as opposed to what I consider cheap looking materials) would have been especially cool (see Vontz Center).

Your right.  its way too small and is somewhat hidden in between those other buildings in covington.  its only seen in the right locations

Exactly my thoughts.  It should be taller.  If it were it would look like a high-rise with a sloped roof.  As it is, it looks like a wedge sitting on the ground.  No less than another 4-5 stories would have created a much different effect.

I'm equally critical of projects on both sides of the river.  My main issues with this building are the cantilevered balconies and ground floor.  Aside from that I must admit, I like it.  I was on the street to the south of the building, about a block away (2nd or 3rd st., can't remember) and it's quite breathtaking looking up at it.

If you are sitting in PBS, you can't even tell the building is there since the crane is gone.  Overshadowed by Rivercenter.  Love the design but could have gone up 10-15 more.

糟糕!The building could have been more aggressive.

more aggressive??  from the south it looks like a dagger sticking straight into the sky.  i think that's aggresive enough for a structure intended to shelter people.

Aggressive, height wise!      I believe is what he means

I like the building in general.  I agree that it's a little short and pudgy, though.  The vertical lines formed by the massing of the windows help, but not enough to totally please me.

Again, though, I'm generally pro-Ascent.

I too generally like the Ascent, but would like to see the upward swoosh begin about the top of RCII.  I also reiterate my dislike for the way NKY jams all the high rise stuff on the riverfront, ruining everything behind it.

Obviously the NK skylines are works in progress.  Hopefully something nice will be built in the other pie-shaped on the east side of the bridge approach.  As-is the configuration in Covington is just plain bizarre.

Liebeskind appears to be falling into ruts with his designs.  He's now getting so many buildings there's no way to do something totally unique for each.  Kind of interesting how Frank Lloyd Wright was a designer primarily of residences and he only had a few public buildings so he was able to come at each of them with fresh ideas (esp since he went through a period of 10+ years without having a single building built).  But the current wave of starchitecture seems to center around art museums, other museums, other cultural facilities, and university buildings. There's a vague resemblance between the swoop of his design for the World Trade Center site and the swoop of this building, however this building is still just a toy just like most of what the current stars are putting out.

How did you get the Japanese on there? Or is it my computer?

on my computer it is the number 15

对不起我不写日文不过我可以写汉语。

I didn't write Japanese I can write chinese though.  Basically i was saying in the previous post "that sucks".

To type chinese/japanese/korean or other scripts I've installed the additional language packs onto my computer.

I only have the Japanese installed.

Dang.

That is still one awesome view, no matter how you slice it. The interiors in the renderings (or are they real?) look... awesome.

I don't believe they're that far with the interiors yet.  Those are renderings.

Wow, those are nice renderings. I'd probably put a wall around the kitchen, though, because I hate having the kitchen in the living room.

DAMN!!!          I NEED TO FIND A SUGAR MOMMA!
