Posted May 29, 200718 yr Hi, My fiance will be doing clinicals at the Cleveland Clinic starting in august. Will it be safe for her (and I) to live in Little Italy and for her to walk down Euclid Ave to the Cleveland Clinic to do her clinicals? I imagine there will be times she will be walking when its dark out. I heard this is not a good area and may not be a good idea for her to be walking on Euclid Ave after 5pm. The alternative is get an apt in the Warehouse district or tremont and have her drive to school/clinicals everyday.
May 30, 200718 yr I believe public transportation is pretty good but not so sure about walking at night. It is the city and like any urbabn area there will be some crime. Also, it's not the shortest walk from Little Italy to the Clinic. There are several other threads on here so I suggest you look at those that will also have good info. In fact, I think there is another thread where someone else is going to be working/interning at the Clinic.
May 30, 200718 yr as a maybe irrelevant side note, I see clinic employee shuttle buses all over...I am not sure where they pick up and drop off around town. maybe that is an option? A bike is second thought. If night driving get a head tail light for safety (although you can get away with riding on the sidewalk here). I personally would not favor the walk.
May 30, 200718 yr i can't imagine that you'd have problems after 5. Once it gets dark, I'd feel a bit more timid about the place. Still, Euclid has a large enough amount of traffic that the eyes on the street should keep things safe. I used to work in the area and the cops never said anything about Euclid. When you say after 5, do you mean 7:30 or 11:30? There's a big difference.
May 30, 200718 yr I'm not totally sure about her schedule, but it won't be 11:30, probably 7 pm at the latest. It just seems silly to move to Little Italy and drive to the CC. I'll also look into the shuttle buses. Thanks for your input.
May 30, 200718 yr 7Pm is not bad at all. Forwhat ever reason I was picturing she was a resident...which means you could leave work at any time of the night. Sorry, i dont care what anyone says, I would not walk down euclid alone at 3AM.
May 30, 200718 yr Bicycles are also a good option. And I've seen Clevelanders bike in a bad snowstorm. You can also take bikes on buses and trains here. But check the rules at http://www.riderta.com/ro_bike.asp I couldn't find anything about taking bikes on the CircleLink buses. I remembered they did a pilot project several years ago. The Circlelink shuttle bus is free and serves major destinations in University Circle. Circlelink service runs every fifteen minutes from 6:15 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday and noon to 5:30 pm on Sunday. I wish they would run later in the day, though. May 30, 200718 yr Neither the CircleLink nor the CC buses will help here. CC is not part of UC, therefore the CircleLink buses don't route past the Clinic. The CC buses are used to transport workers from satellite parking lots. Either the #6 bus or a bike is your best option. The 9x might be perfect, but I believe it has been re-routed during the Silverline construction.
May 30, 200718 yr I seriously can't believe that there are such limited transportation options between Little Italy and the CC. Look at this map: <a href="http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?address=11500%20Mayfield%20Rd&city=Cleveland&state=OH&zipcode=44106%2d2341&country=US&title=%3cb%20class%3d%22fn%20org%22%3e11500%20Mayfield%20Rd%3c%2fb%3e%3cbr%20%2f%3e%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22locality%22%3eCleveland%3c%2fspan%3e%2c%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22region%22%3eOH%3c%2fspan%3e%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22postal%2dcode%22%3e44106%2d2341%3c%2fspan%3e%2c%20%20%3cspan%20style%3d%22display%3ainline%3bmargin%2dbottom%3a0px%3b%22%20class%3d%22country%2dname%22%3eUS%3c%2fspan%3e%3c%2fspan%3e&cid=lfmaplink2&name=&dtype=s">Map of 11500 Mayfield Rd Cleveland, OH 44106-2341, US</a> It is such a short walking distance between Little Italy and the CC. The CC is one of the top hospitals in the world, yet I am being advised not to walk around it during the evening? What a shame the public safety can't be provided for. What further exacerbates it is there seems to be some public transporation, but you still have to walk to a bus stop (bus 6 as suggested) or walk to the rapid stop (if living downtown) at cedar and murray hill. Then, whats the point of not walking to Little Italy if you are already out there waiting for the bus to get there? And why no loop that encompasses the whole CC, Case Western, and Little Italy areas? She had the opportunity to go to Pitt for what she is doing, I wish she had gone on that interview. The area around UPMC in Oakland seems much safer and much more pedestrian friendly. From my discussion with other people here, they advise me she drives to the CC to do her clinicals. They say she should not be on the rapid or waiting for a bus after 5pm. That is apparently what everyone else does, to the benefit of the oil companies of course.
May 30, 200718 yr just some thoughts.. The reason why there are such limited choices right now is because Euclid is in the midst off a massive overhaul that will feature a new bus rapid transit line that will connect downtown, Cleveland Clinic and University Circle. So, you are about 1.5 years too early. In late 2008, mass transit on Euclid will be super convenient. Be careful who you ask for advice. Many suburbanites have ideas about the rapid that are just untrue. I used to take the Rapid from downtown to Little Italy on a nightly basis last year around 10pm and I never felt uncomfortable or saw anything strange. If I had to exit at E.79, I wouldn't feel too comfortable walking around that neighborhood. But that's totally different. And regarding walking around CC at night, people will always be overally cautious when making recommendations. The Clinic's police department is truly top notch. They keep the area safe. Many suburban commuters see black people waiting for the bus on Euclid and equate that with a lack of safety.
May 30, 200718 yr I just spoke with someone that takes the rapid from Tower City to the Cedar/ Murray Hill Rd stop. He also says there shouldn't be a problem. The other person I spoke to that was telling me of the dangers informed me that they havn't been in that area in quite a few years.
May 31, 200718 yr hmm after 5pm?? thats kind of ridiculous, maybe after 1am the area isnt so great, but even then if you're going to take the rapid it is really safe, i've used the rapid many many times going from little italy to the airport and back late at night and have never had a problem. another thing to note is that while euclid is in the process of becoming much more transit friendly theres going to be a new rapid station much more conveniently located at mayfield rd in little italy in a few years as well. so the issues you're having right now are being addressed by the city. and yea like what was said before theres a lot of scared suburban people who work at the Cleveland Clinic who have all kinds of ridiculous misconceptions of Cleveland that are unfortunate to hear. what about biking to work? i know theres a lot of crazy construction, but thats definately something i know many people tend to do who work at the hospitals.
May 31, 200718 yr I would think that on CC campus should be safe any time, I've never heard otherwise, also UC and Little Italy should be safe just about any time. There are a few blocks in between that seem a little less savory, but still shouldn't be a problem at 7 at night. In winter, she will probably want to take some sort of climate controlled tranportation regardless of safety.
May 31, 200718 yr There's also back streets you can take for bike riding to avoid much of the construction on Euclid. Murray Hill to Cedar is one option. Circle Drive (on the other side of the Rapid tracks) and Adelbert is another. I totally forgot about the 9X. That should be a good route, though I see it doesn't go farther west than the University Circle Rapid station at Cedar Road after about 6 p.m. Maybe that will change after the Euclid Corridor project is done. At least I hope so. No wonder so many people drive to the Cleveland Clinic from the heights. June 4, 200718 yr Clinic to take over Abu Dhabi facilities The Cleveland Clinic announced today that it will expand its presence in the Middle East by running an existing network of health-care facilities in the United Arab Emirates. The Clinic in October will take over management of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, which includes acute-care facilities, a behavioral sciences pavilion and a rehabilitation center in Abu Dhabi, the nation's capital. Dr. Kenneth Ouriel, chairman of the Clinic's division of surgery in Cleveland, has moved to Abu Dhabi to serve as chief executive officer. http://blog.cleveland.com/plaindealer/2007/06/the_cleveland_clinic_announced.html
July 13, 200717 yr Cleveland Clinic ranks No. 4 overall, No. 1 in heart care in U.S. News & World Report But U.S. News rankings miss some angles Friday, July 13, 2007 Harlan Spector Plain Dealer Reporter It happens every July. The sun is hot, the lake is warm and the Cleveland Clinic is ranked tops in heart care. For the 13th straight year, the Clinic is the No. 1 heart hospital in the prestigious U.S. News & World Report hospital rankings. The Clinic is No. 4 overall. The rankings provide a lift for hospitals that make the cut (173 in all), and a neat marketing tool. But should consumers choose hospitals based on a magazine list? http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/stories/index.ssf?/base/news/1184317426103740.xml&coll=2
July 13, 200717 yr ^The difference I think is that the Cleveland Clinic attracts people with very serious heart conditions that have a 10% chance of living. If those people went to the hospitals that have a higher ranking as far as heart attack victims, they would probably have a 1% chance. The Cleveland Clinic is not your typical heart attack hospital...if everyone understands my post.
July 13, 200717 yr My wife is a doctor at the Clinic. They get a lot of bizarre cases that other hospitals can't figure out. I am amazed at how many out of state people go to the Clinic.

If something happens to me, I want to be take care of at the Cleveland Clinic...period!

August 4, 200717 yr Musky.. this particular thread is about "relocation" advice. So I don't think it should be consolidated or that your post -albeit informative- is appropriate here. :-)
