Posted June 1, 200718 yr These two cities introduced me to England -- they were the places we stopped in after flying into Gatwick from Cleveland. So we headed down side roads to the town of Arundel and its castle. Part of the castle is still occupied by the Duke of Norfolk; the rest is open for public tours... We move on to Salisbury where we spent three nights. Just a guesstimate, but Salisbury seemed to be roughly the size of Lorain. It's quite a bit healthier though, economically. Here's some streets scenes from this city... You can tell pretty much what the issue is from these signs posted in a home's window and how the resident feels about it... A couple of gates into the oldest part of town.... A 1600s church converted into an arts center... It was fun watching this double-decker intercity bus negotiate a tight street corner. I soon learned that big vehicles have to do this all over the UK... Our bed and breakfast and its neighborhoods (dates from about 1900 -- pretty new!)... Some random samplings of Salisbury architecture... Of course, when you come to Salisbury, you can't miss its cathedral. Truly one of England's gems. And, it was where one of the 12 copies of the Magna Carta was delivered in the 1200s. One of the four surviving copies is here. That's just one of the gems you can see inside (and out) at this magnificent structure... Hope you like Salisbury and Arundel. More cities coming!
