Ground broken for new home for 7th District Appeals Court

The two-story $3.8 million building should open next year

 

YOUNGSTOWN — The renaissance of downtown Youngstown continued with ground being broken for the new 7th District Court of Appeals building on West Federal Street.

 

Rainy and chilly weather Wednesday did not stop about 60 people from gathering at the site of the new court building for the ceremony.

 

Jason T. Whitehead, executive director of the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp., the downtown's redevelopment agency, said the building "allows the court to provide better services to the counties they serve."

Ribbon-cutting held for new appeals court

By JOE GORMAN Tribune Chronicle

 

YOUNGSTOWN — The presiding judge of the 7th District Court of Appeals said Friday’s ribbon-cutting of a new courthouse on West Federal Street is the end of a 10-year journey.

 

Judge Gene Donofrio said Friday that the 20 staff members who served the appeals court, which covers eight counties, were tripping over each other because they were working in the space of one courtroom in the Mahoning County Courthouse.

 

Construction on the $3.5 million building began last spring and just finished.

Judges like new setting

VINDICATOR STAFF WRITER

 

YOUNGSTOWN — The judges of the 7th District Court of Appeals say the new courtroom, where they heard oral arguments for the first time Tuesday, offers a more intimate setting and better acoustics to hear legal arguments than the old courtroom in the Mahoning County Courthouse.

 

"We feel honored to sit on this very historic occasion for the first session of oral arguments for the court of appeals," in its second home in 94 years, said Judge Gene Donofrio, presiding judge of the four-judge court, which hears oral arguments on cases from lower courts.

 

"The old courtroom was just beautiful as far as the grandeur and the workmanship and the history behind it, but the new courtroom suits our needs very, very well," Judge Donofrio said.
