February 26, 20241 yr I suppose “opposite of topic” is on topic in a way, and one of my least favorite popular artists just came to town. I have a theory as to why Drake is popular. In our world full of ways to avoid boredom and monotony, a lot of people have come full circle and crave them. Hence his popularity. He’s not as bad as “mumble rap”. I swear Future sounds like he has marbles in his mouth and a brain injury. But it’s close. (For perspective, I like a lot of hip hop old and newish, though since I retired from bouncing I haven’t really kept up with the latter)

April 1, 20241 yr thank you chatgpt 😂🤖 write a short passage about billie eilish in the style of neuromancer by william gibson In the neon-lit alleys of the sprawl, where shadows dance with data and reality blurs with illusion, there exists a figure unlike any other: Billie Eilish. She is the ghost in the machine, a digital siren whose voice reverberates through the circuits of cyberspace. With each pulsating beat and glitched-out melody, she hacks into the collective consciousness, rewiring synapses and reshaping perceptions. Clad in the cybernetic armor of augmented reality, she navigates the virtual realm with the grace of a netrunner, her every lyric a viral payload waiting to infect the minds of the masses. To some, she is a symbol of rebellion against the corporate overlords who seek to control the flow of information. To others, she is a harbinger of a new age, where the boundaries between man and machine dissolve into a kaleidoscope of code and chaos. Love her or fear her, one thing is certain – in the digital underworld of the future, Billie Eilish is a force to be reckoned with, a glitch in the system that cannot be ignored.

May 8, 20241 yr Oh jeez, this is terrible news. Responsible as a writer, performer and producer, of so much great music. RIP https://pitchfork.com/news/steve-albini-storied-producer-and-icon-of-the-rock-underground-dies-at-61/ My hovercraft is full of eels
May 8, 20241 yr ^ i know. its just unbelievable. i am in shock. not that it matters now, but i can't help but wonder what ... hidden illness? bad ticker? suicide? i guess all that will come out later. ugh. rip steve albini you are a legend.
May 8, 20241 yr That was pretty insightful reading his perspective on music production. A real loss for the music scene. Also, Cloud Nothings has somewhat quietly gotten a huge amount of publicity for a Cleveland band. I had no idea they are so closely associated with him.
May 9, 20241 yr While I highly prefer Nevermind's production by Butch Vig to In Utero's by Albini I still always respected it and him. After Bleach, Vig's wetter production gave the band what it needed to not be so anti-pop. In Utero went back to Bleach's ethos and the band probably wanted it that way. I also enjoyed the little pot shots Vig and Albini took at each other in the media such as, "His drum sound is too boxy". Albini's other work proved that he wasn't just the "dry guy" In Utero might make you think.
May 9, 20241 yr Albini produced a lot of albums. For me, two of his best and lesser high profile ones were Melt-Banana’s resolutely lo-fi Scratch or Stitch and The Wedding Present’s Seamonsters, where he took their trademark jangly guitar sound into a flatter, clearer and heavier territory, to great effect. My hovercraft is full of eels
May 13, 20241 yr more than his recording aesthetic for others (he hated the term producer lol) albini will always be remembered for his own band big black to me. Edited May 13, 20241 yr by mrnyc

May 20, 20241 yr For those of us who were big fans of the late great 97X WOXY, Inhailer Radio in Cincinnati has kicked off the 2024 Indie 500. For any who missed it, last year they put together the 2023 Modern Rock 500, which was an amazing tribute to 97X complete with the original DJs and promos. I loved last year's broadcast for the pure nostalgia factor, but I think I prefer the music this year more so far since they aren't limited it to just what 97X played (or would have played). Listen online for free (including last year's show) at https://www.inhailer.com, or (if localish) at 90.9FM HD3. Despite paying for SiriusXM, I've found myself listening to Inhailer (online) the majority of the time while I'm working lately. It's a good mix of current and classic indie/alternative, but with a way wider range of other interesting stuff mixed in depending on whatever the DJ feels like playing. Never seems to get boring or repetitive, it's like how radio used to be when it was still good. Plus, lots of great Cincinnati and Ohio artists in the mix. Edited May 20, 20241 yr by mrCharlie

December 6, 2024Dec 6 I don't really use Apple Music all that much, mostly listening instead to Cincinnati's Inhailer Radio while I work since I get distracted picking out my own music. That's how I finally got into Wussy over the summer, which (along with their former bands and various side projects) accounted for more than half of my time listening to Apple Music this year. I easily spent as much or more time watching their stuff on Youtube, their KEXP live performances are amazing. Little Miami was the first proper Wussy song that really grabbed my attention, and my top track for the year. Not knowing their work, the title initially had me thinking it would be some kind of fun local reference. I was half right about that.

Wussy is routinely called one of the best bands in the country today, easily on the level of Wilco or Yo La Tengo, and yet they remain pretty obscure. Definitely a band worth checking out. This CBS story provides some insight about the names: And this video is a great taste of their music, with some very endearing banter between songs: Edited December 6, 2024Dec 6 by mrCharlie

The Apple Music top artists list is a bit deceptive because it's not close to my only music source, but it's the only one that makes a list I can post. It ends up being mostly stuff I haven't bought yet (I've since dropped $$ at Shake It on Wussy albums), and the shared family playlist for in the car when. I still hear a lot of LCD Soundsystem on the two radio stations I listen to most (Cincinnati's Inhailer, SiriusXMU on satellite). I'm definitely a fan - but the real fan iat our house is our 7-year-old son. They are his favorite band, so they are featured heavily on the family playlist.
