We went to the Beachland Ballroom last night to see Kishi Bashi. Amazing show. How that guy isn’t a huge star is mystifying.

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover---  by Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends

Ripped some more CD's that I found tucked away in a box.

Current Play list includes REM's New Adventures in Hi-Fi and Lenny Kravitz - Circus

Also Powerman 5000 - Tonight the Stars Revolt, I always has a soft spot for that Rob Zombie style.

Don't Judge a Book by its Cover---  by Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends

Don't judge a book by its cover..Don't make your mind up too soon.. Things aren't necessarily..Always what they appear to be!!  Don't judge a book by its cover..Don't make your mind up too soon... Never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never....Never judge a book by its cover!  Next parent, 2nd verse!

Thomas passed Terrence the Tractor plowing in the fields one day. He said, "my oh my, you do look funny. Where are your wheels, are your wheels, are your wheels? However do you move along? You really do look funny."  "Don't be so rude!" said Terrence the Tractor. "I don't have wheels like you because my catepillar tracks are so much better. I can go anywhere anywhere anywhere, I don't need rails like you. One day I will prove it. Show you how I do it. Then you will understand."

Chorus (as provided by M2S)

Sure enough one winter's day when the snow lay deep and tall, Thomas got stuck he was in trouble. Who do you think came along came along and rescued him that day? The snow didn't matter, to Terrence the Tractor. Now Thomas understands..

If there are any jazz lovers out there, and there must be at least one or two (and I’m not talking about “lite” jazz :-P), WKCR-FM 89.9, the radio station of Columbia University, is presenting a non-stop tribute to jazz drummer/legend Roy Haynes running all the way until Jan. 23.  I’m sure this would include his entire discography. So far I’ve heard everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington to Nat King Cole and many other great jazz musicians with whom he performed over the past 50+ years. Every so often this station does this. A few years ago on Billie Holliday’s 90th birthday they presented a solid two-week tribute to her music. No need to live in NYC however, it’s available online: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/

For anyone having a staycation  this holiday weekend (and would enjoy listening to something other than the usual crap that is deemed "music" these days), the above station is in the midst of a Benny Goodman centennial festival through June 1

Also Powerman 5000 - Tonight the Stars Revolt, I always has a soft spot for that Rob Zombie style.

Lead singer of Powerman is Zombie's brother if I remember correctly. I was into them in high school; completely not my style anymore but I saw them at Bogarts in Cincinnati and it was a fantastic show.

Yep Spider One is Rob Zombie's brother, no really my style either but it was a nice nostalgia trip. I can imagine that it would be a great show, seems like they are very theatrical with out crossing over into the super campy like GWAR (Disclaimer: i have never owned a GWAR CD but my brother was into them when he was in junior high)

Edit: Favorite Rob Zombie moment is when he is driving the Munster mobile in one of his videos.

I've always dug Canadian rock, i.e. the Tragically Hip, Sloan, 54-40, etc. Right now I'm really digging Matt Mays & el Torpedo (Halifax), and Sam Roberts Band (Montreal). I've seen both live multiple times and they do not disappoint. They're definitely my fave 2 right now.

i never really had any opinion on canadian pop music re its canadianess, but i do like metric a lot. ok in reality they are kind of a nyc band - but whatever they are great fun live.

Metric is totally a Canadian indie-pop band.  They're like, the quintessential Canadian indie-pop band.

Lately though, I've been listening to a lot of Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Chad VanGaalen.

By far, one of the best intro songs for any game I have ever played:

Yes!  Somebody put this up, the opening track off their last studio album, 1999's "Might-ay White-ay".  The surging Hammond organ recalls the opening minutes of Dark Side of the Moon (that's a joke, btw):

Am I the only person on Urban Ohio who saw these guys live? I saw them once at Bogart's in 1996, opening for Letters to Cleo (who the hell remembers them - and who the hell put that bill together!?) and at Ripley's in 1998.  Ripley's is now Chipotle, and Mephiskapheles actually appeared on MTV about five times before they hired Carson Daily. There's a connection there.

Yeah, the above band actually opened for this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuXw-ekpdsc

since today is "the 3rd of June" it seems appropriate to revive this mega-hit (on the top of the charts for weeks on end--back in the days when music wasn't so Balkanized!) from 1967:

Metric is totally a Canadian indie-pop band. They're like, the quintessential Canadian indie-pop band.

Metric is really awesome.  i ordered their new album, (it included immediate download and a vinyl copy) and it's really good.  the vinyl hasn't come yet, some issues with the economy and the pressing company.

Emily Haines is just fantastic.  luckily my wife does not see her as competition.  not sure why.

I understand Radiohead is back in studio. Can't wait to see what they come out with next.

Love Metric. And Sarah Harmer.

I'm more of a tech/electro house fan, but lately I've been getting into some fun dance/indie rock music. Lots of great remixes that fuze the two worlds together. Hipster/Dance/Electro/Rock/Party tunes!!! :D

I also find Matt & Kim's happiness to be contagious:

Oh god I remember this song on some commercial and I loved it!!  Thanks for posting this.  I too am a house fan.

Oh, just listening to Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise 6: Ibiza at 3AM.

I know I've posted this one before, but this one is too good, and very rarely heard in public:

Rent: Orignal cast recording.

I am not a musicals or showtunes fan but I have become a fan of Rent after seeing the movie version.  And Rent is very old news, yes I know.

There is something remarkably upbeat about this considering the subject matter....the joi de vivre in it all.

For the Metric fans out of there, they are the NPR concert of the week podcast. Availible on the NPR website and itunes.

Stumbled across this guy on Break.com

He is a god. He is, Beardyman.

His cover of "Teardrop" by Massive Attack:

Hilarious, but amazing Drum&Bass.  Beatbox Style:

This video always puts a smile on my face... SO 90's!  I'm holding my breath for another Gorillaz album, awaiting Radioheads next too.

&"

I am shocked....

More Beardyman.

The new Prodigy album is fun for anyone looking for a little mid-to-late-90s electronic nostalgia. ;)

MyTwoSense, here is the album version of Dancing Machine, but it still doesn't sound right on a computer.  The Jackson 5 recordings were all impeccably recorded, typical of all those great warm-sounding 1970's recordings.  This one is a great song, and was a lot of work to get sounding great in the studio:

And what a great tragedy the cutting the bridge out of this one was, this one is incredible.  This is live, and proves in 2 minutes why Michael was the best child singer of all time. He nails absolutely everything:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk1asX_sHRk

That British kid totally botched it at the funeral.  You could just feel the Jackson brothers wincing.

Can't find an appropriate thread to post this in but...

I met JOAN BAEZ at the Trolley Stop in Dayton. She came in with her band. I danced a Virginia Reel with her as my partner.

Just another reason why Dayton is the nexus of the Universe.

Not the first celebrity I've met there either. Last year I was introduced to Bill Nighy and Paddy Cosidine as well.

Even though I have work in 6 hours, I had to drink some beers and tell the world!

Wow!  I'm impressed with the Joan Baez meeting. Was she nice?  I've heard she's not the nicest person, especially to fans.

Saosin's new record came out this past Tuesday, and it's amazing.  Very different from their self titled, but still epic.

"On My Own" live performance video from the DVD on the deluxe edition.

The two albums i've picked up recently have been Dead Weather and Wilco...good discs.

Brendan Benson - My Old, Familiar Friend

The Decemberists - Hazards of Love

Yesterday was a good music day:

In the morning, at Second Street market, the sweet Sweet Betsy

At night, at Jazz Central in scary east Dayton,  at a benefit for a local photographer who had her equipment stolen:

[ur=http://www.myspace.com/legbone]Legbone[/url]

(one of the better punk bands I’ve heard, and I’ve heard some of the famous ones)

…and the always outstanding girrl punk band Jaspar the Colossa.  (they will be playing Cincy on the 18th @ Stockyards Café)

Favorite music at the moment?  The Beatles.  Can't get enough.

Came late to this party:  The Hold Steady/ Boys & Girls in America.

Came across this song on a Gran Turismo 5 video for the new Ferrari berlinetta, the 458 Italia.  I was just reminded again why Drum & Bass is so amazing.

London Elektricity: Just One Second - Apex Remix

just one second (apex remix) (HD AUDIO)

I have been smitten by Fox Jaws, an Ontario band who recently released their second album.  They have two singers, Carleigh Aikins and Dan Allen, but something weird happens here.  One might expect the guy to have the strong voice and the gal to temper it.  Nope.  Carleigh wears the pants in this group and Dan is there to mellow things out.

Home and Native - acoustic

Came late to this party: The Hold Steady/ Boys & Girls in America.

I absolutely love the Hold Steady, better late than never though.

I have been listening to a ton of Yo La Tengo lately moving backwards through their catalog, though I still don't have the new album. For any other YLT fans out there. NPR cuurent has two concerts for down load, one for SxSW and one from the 930 Club in DC. Both are availible on itunes podcasts or the NPR website. The SxSW setlist is better because they were just playing and not supporting an album.

For those  on UO with a World music/Indie pop/Cape Cod fetish the new Vampire Weekend Single "Horchata" is availible as a free download on their website here:

www.vampireweekend.com

Like most of their music it is a bit dense and takes a few repeated listenings for the luscious melodies and details to pop out.

Saw these guys recently.  Love the dual drum setup they've used on the past couple albums!

not really, they aren't native canadians and they lived and recorded in nyc and other places too. i know somebody who knew them pretty well at least when they were here. still, i guess in a way all that makes them as canadian as anything else!

here's pic & bloggy review from the metric show i saw - it was hot stuff !!!

Metric

@ Highline Ballroom

New York, NY - August 8, 2008

Who needs the All Points West Festival? All you need is 1:30 in the morning in the Meat Packing District in a slick, sleek yet (yes) meaty venue to see the slick, sleek yet meaty Toronto-based, New York-nutured, internationally-seeded hybrid that is Metric.

speaking of canada -- sometimes you can get a true mind meld onstage between the old school and the new school.

here's an example, arcade fire and the boss in ottawa in 2007 on one of the greatest songs ever, af's keep the car running:

Every night my dream’s the same.

Same old city with a different name.

Men are coming to take me away.

I don’t know why but I know I can’t stay.

There’s a weight that’s pressing down.

Late at night you can hear the sound.

Even the noise you make when you sleep.

Can’t swim across a river so deep.

They know my name 'cause I told it to them,

But they don’t know where And they don’t know

When It’s coming, when It’s coming.

There’s a fear I keep so deep,

Knew its name since before I could speak:

Aaaah aaaaaah aaaaah aaaaaah

They know my name 'cause I told it to them,

But they don’t know where And they don’t know

When It’s coming, Oh! when It’s coming

Keep the car running

If some night I don’t come home,

Please don’t think I’ve left you alone.

The same place animals go when they die,

You can’t climb across a mountain so high.

The same city where I go when I sleep,

You can’t swim across a river so deep.

They know my name 'cause I told it to them,

But they don’t know where

And they don’t know

When It’s coming, Oh! when is it coming?

Keep the car running

Keep the car running

Keep the car running

Its been a couple years since I posted. Remember me? Anyway, I've really been enjoying the past couple years in Cleveland and have been following the local music scene. Thought I'd share some of my favorite band, Hot Cha Cha. They just won best girl band in Scene Magazine's "Best of Cleveland" issue. Their full length album release party is tomorrow and they are playing with other "Best of Cleveland"  winners, Uno Lady and Freedom.

>arcade fire and the boss in ottawa in 2007 o

Win Butler has written at least 10 songs that leave anything Bruce has done in the dust.  I'm predicting that Arcade Fire's next album is going to suck. Almost nobody's put out back-to-back-to-back albums that are full of awesome stuff, and they're way too big for the works not to get gunked up, the wifey's going to shut things down when the eye starts wandering, etc.

I photographed them on the Neon Bible tour in 2007 and had no idea who they were.  I left after 3 songs because I thought they sucked.  I was amazed they had a crowd of 5,000 for for being a bunch of dorks so I looked them up on youtube and got hooked within a few weeks.  What's amazing is what a doofus Win Butler sounds like in interviews.  I have to confess if I met him and he wasn't famous I would have no faith in his ability to create something great. If the new record is great though, then they're going to be hands-down the best band of the decade, but it looks like they're not going to get it released before the end of the year.

If not them, who is the best (well-known) band of the decade?  The White Stripes?

Do they have to be new this decade?  I'd say Modest Mouse has put out an impressive body of work, and their best work, this decade, though they started mid-90's.  I'd nominate Radiohead, because they've also put out great work this decade, but I think there best work was in the last decade.

For bands that got their start this decade, I'd second the Arcade Fire nomination, and add maybe The New Pornographers, maybe The Decemberists.  Are any of those bands really  "well known", though?  What qualifies with the current fragmentation of media and genre?

Of course, I came of age in the mid 90's.  I wonder who someone whom came of age this decade would nominate.  They may have a completely different, and of course less valid point  of view.

X, you sound like me. That whole 90's rock thing is really clouding my judgement. I would say Jack White has to be up there pretty high . The quality and accesibility of all of his projects have been top notch. The Radiohead catalog from this decade has been pretty amazing too, but no big hits. I think that it is too early to see who the new best bands of the decade were. My ballot would include Kings Of Leon, Modest Mouse, The Killers, The Hold Steady, Black Keys.

I love the Twilight Singers too, but I don't think they will make very many other peoples list. You either love Greg Dulli or you don't. 1
