If only I was half as cool as this dude...

been listening to a LOT of Aquemini and ATLiens by outkast.

Work your way through the complete works of The Velvet Underground (4 albums) and Lou Reed solo albums (at least 10).  Between them there are at least 50 stunning songs, none of which are EVER heard in public (this one's still got under 1,000 hits):

Lou Reed Baby Face (HQ)

The commercial success of Wild Side was an anomaly, but it also proves that pretty much any Lou Reed song could have been welcomed into the Great American Songbook.  But the music industry was and is run by horrible human beings, so instead we've got you-name-it.

So any love for the epic Lulu. It's getting terrible reviews but I think it's fantastic. Nearly 90 minutes of Lou's filthy lyrics matched with Metallica's big riffage. Junior Dad is a powerhouse.

I get a kick out of metalheads freaking out. With Lulu and Opeth's non-cookie monster new album. They all need group therapy.

Yeah it's definitely much more a Lou Reed than Metallica record.  But here's what's going to happen -- about 4% of the people who buy this album are going to come back to it in a few months after shelving it after their first listen.  It's going to start clicking, then they'll become die-hard Lou Reed fans and never come back to Metallica. I think those guys in Metallica have been closet Lou Reed fans for a long time and have been frustrated that they haven't been able to successfully mature and be something other than Metallica.  But from Lou's perspective it makes good business sense to pair with those guys for awhile.

^^needs autotune.

Hmmm. I was recently listening to the Velvet Underground and Nico, and was wondering who thought it was a good idea to let her sing. Maybe we can autotune it?

>was wondering who thought it was a good idea to let her sing

According to legend it was Andy Warhol's idea.  Here is Iggy Pop on his 1-month relationship with her circa 1970 (ffw to 3:00):

Iggy Pop & Nico

The thing about that time period is that it seems relatively few people were artists/musician/writers compared to now, so everyone who moved to New York ended up meeting all of the major players within a few months of moving there.  That's absolutely impossible now, since there are over 100,000 people there all pursuing the same pieces of those pies.

People played, but they were all too busy building Chevrolets and working the fields. So you had a ton of people who could do G,C and D and sing old country songs. But, since more advanced techniques were much harder to find information about and sheet music of the time was mostly the 1-4-5 stuff too, you usually had to go on your Crossroads journey to Mississippi, Western Virginia, NYC, Chicago's South Side or Birmingham, England to learn your chosen sound's techniques. No going on down to the music shop in 1971 to buy a Zeppelin tab book, for sure. Even if somebody could pick out riffs, when they'd show 'em to ya they'd be all barre chords instead of power chords, or they'd bust out a capo for a song that didn't use it because a lot of people hated barre chords back then.

That is still true to some extent.  It's extremely rare to hear a good mandolin or pedal steel player in the north.  Also, you never see guys playing electric guitars, especially telecasters, with thumb picks and those funny banjo finger thingies, which is fairly common in the south.

I don't like a lot of R&B/Hip Hop but Take Care by Drake is pretty good. He's mildly auto-tuned, but the incredible production quality of this album and some really good guest artists make up for it.

Title track:

Also, new Florence and the Machine album. People seem to either love her or hate her. I feel like she's one of those singers who became an instant caricature of herself, and is better appreciated about 20 years later.

Oh, and some obligatory Nina Simone, this time mixed with Jeff Buckley in a mild dubstep/electro-lounge mash-up of their covers of the legendary Lilac Wine. As they both vie for arguably the greatest cover of this song of all time, this track is a stroke of genius:

I had forgotten about the Warhol connection with the Velvet Underground (Yes I know he did the Banana screen print for the cover but you forget about when you listen to everything on an ipod)

Boyce Avenue has some very good stuff.

I don't play video games, but I'd play this just for the music. Who'dathunk video games would have soundtracks, let alone music that's as impressively and carefully scored and performed as this....

Skyrim Soundtrack - Dragonborn (Main Theme)

Skyrim Soundtrack - Steel on Steel

These are OK for white noise, background soundscapes or if you just want to fall asleep...

Hey, I go back to this as one of my videogame soundtracks....

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Megaman 2 and duck tales on the NES had some great stuff.

Contra!!

^^^ From Wikipedia: In September 2009, David Race of Beavercreek, Ohio, became the sixth person to achieve a perfect score. His time of 3 hours, 41 minutes, and 22 seconds set a new record for the fastest time to obtain a perfect score.

^ Yeah, Contra has some great tunes! I only ever heard them all using the Konami Code, though.

Meanwhile, this clip is yet more proof that today's music sucks (at 1:05 it gets serious!):

I hate going out because nobody plays the good music.  There are thousands of great records, and I hardly ever hear any of them.

Even more...

Everything in R&B since about 1985 has been a cheap imitation of Tina Turner.  This is the real thing:

Ike And Tina Turner - Bold Soul Sister

Again, people really need to quit listening to techno!

"The News" by  Mayer Hawthorne is pretty catchy. I have it reserved at the library.

I am going through WNWV withdrawal.  This is a sad holiday season for me.  I don't know when or where I am going to find new music.

^ Oh stop complaining and enjoy your Vanessa Williams singing holiday standards.  :|

Miss America??

Over the Rhine - Karen Bergquist's voice is outstanding

Miss America??

Exactly. I turned the radio on Monday morning and that was what I was greeted with. My two favorite things, holiday music and easy listening. Because you want your holiday fare smooth.

I am listening to my sister's copy of the soundtrack for the video game Skyrim: The Elder Scrolls V by Jeremy Soule. I've heard some of the music before, the parts that are very dramatic and fast-paced. But now the parts I'm listening to are atmospheric, romantic, soulful and just downright beautiful. If you're having a tough day at work, or life is giving you some tough times to sort through, I encourage you to listen to this music. It's quite wonderful.

EDIT: I think "Far Horizons" is my favorite. It is a very emotional song. Here it is......

Skyrim Soundtrack - Disc 2 - 06 - Far Horizons - Jeremy Soule

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

I used to dig that music, KJP. Then I took an arrow in the knee.

At least I hope the dragon didn't burn you to a crisp!

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

It's been a long time since I've paid full price for a game instead of waiting for it to come down to $19.99.  I might break that streak for Skyrim.

I've never played Skyrim, but I loved the music and played it for my sister. She liked it so much she bought the soundtrack and the video game. She plays the video game and loses all track of time, sometimes staying up to 3 a.m.! She describes it as less of a video game and more of an experience, especially if you can play it on your big screen TV and home theater sound. Now I am scared to play the game! I think I'll stick with just the music....

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

^Ha, and of course, as with many things, my expectations have been inflated to the point I'll almost surely be disappointed.

It's probably going to be a while until Skyrim is $19.99; it's not like Duke Nukem Forever and Homefront which dropped like rocks.

Hey friends. I haven't plugged this on here yet, but I ma the Friday night DJ for the new alternative/underground night at DNA: Level C. (https://www.facebook.com/nightclubdnalevelc)

^^ Solid playlist.

The tyranny of DSLR video.  That video would have cost at least $50,000 to shoot 5 years ago, now it's basically free.

It does seem like that a lot of bands that wouldn't have had enough money for a video a few years ago have videos for multiple songs these days. Even when Pantera was huge in the mid-'90s, they could only spend $5,000 on a video since MTV would only show their videos sparingly. Here's an example:

This was at a time when CD sales were gigantic and MTV still played music. Unlike today, where it only takes 75,000 CDs sold to have a #1 record and MTV is mostly film of high school girls crying.

In the late 80's/early 90's, what was soon to be labeled Alternative Rock, out of necessity, took on the public access aesthetic.  This was generally slightly outdated lighting and cameras on a slightly undersized soundstage.  As it was video before DSLR video, the look was generally low contrast, flat, and with everything in focus.

The best example I know of:

By contrast, this video from more or less the same year was shot on 35mm on a real soundstage:

DSLR video, esp full frame that was introduced by the Canon 5D Mark II in 2008, takes on the high contrast and shallow depth of field of 35mm for pennies on the dollar.

Playlist from last Friday night at DNA

This Friday will be a good night to come down to visit. There are no events scheduled at The Q, so parking will be easy to find and cheap. Oh, and there is no cover.

You can definitely see a difference there, especially with the contrast and the focus. The second video in a way is more realistic as it mimics how the eye really focuses on what's important; creating a hierarchy. Then there's the obvious difference in video quality.

I noticed basically the same thing when auto-focus on point and shoot cameras became popular. We've come a long way from Polaroids and disposable cameras. Did you hear about Kodak going bankrupt?

Anyway, now everyone is able to make high quality, professional-looking photos. Especially if they know a couple things in Photoshop.

As a side note: It's really strange to me, I've been using Photo Shop for years to manipulate photos but when women find out I know how to use it, they want me to teach them how to use it too...but so they can airbrush themselves and take out things like puffy eyes. It's no wonder women always look better in Facebook photos compared to real life.

I've only made a couple (low-grade) videos before--I wonder if the technology is available (and commonly used) for air-brushing certain elements in video now (at least without being painstaking).

Two-stroke street bike guys love that Liz Phair vid because of the Yamaha RD in it.

OK, yes, this song "rips off" Master of Puppets and a few other Metallica songs a little. But I guarantee you'll never think of the word "elimination" the same way again. E... LIMINATION!
