July 1, 20159 yr I hate to read too much into those photos, but I think it's indisputable that both Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious have pretty nutty looks on their faces. Already at a young age they look doomed to the life of a troublemaker.

July 2, 20159 yr Back in the early 2000s, a site called Metal Sludge was reaching it's peak helped largely in part due to a section where they published pictures of Grunge and Nu-Metal band members from the '80s when they were in Hair Metal bands.

Kind of like Dr. Dre in that new wave band. And you don't need to see that photo to know that he was basically a complete phony -- just listen to The Chronic today. The songs plod along, his vocal delivery is totally forced, and so there's hardly a track he can carry himself without the appearance of a buddy like the then-nascent Snoop Dogg. The 90s nostalgia industrial complex fixates on Nirvana's Nevermind when really it was The Chronic that represented a decisive fork in the road. I mean, guys in THE MARCHING BAND bought The Chronic.

It may be the most uneven album in the history of popular music. Three classic tracks almost back to back followed by low grade filler for the rest of the album. The one I didn't understand was MC Ren's solo album, which crossed the line to out and out racism. His perogative, but did he have any idea where the sales were coming from? One would expect more from someone who worked with marketers as savvy as Dre, Cube, and E.

I did this to my brother's Facebook page for his birthday. The irony is he went back to playing metal bass in his mid 40s and his current band probably has a higher profile than any of his bands from the heyday of the genre.

One would expect more from someone who worked with marketers as savvy as Dre, Cube, and E. I never heard that record. I do think that Easy E's first solo record might be holding up better than Dr. Dre's, despite the effort of various former NWA members to smear him circa 1992-93. I don't think Easy E was done making good records or being a prominent pop culture figure. It's not tough to imagine him as a guest on any number of talk shows, not to mention reality shows.

Kind of like Dr. Dre in that new wave band. I was always curious about Dre's past when I heard Eazy calling out Dre on that one Eazy EP with the long name everybody bought. It also had pictures of a fake Dre in drag on the inlay card. Of course finding information on that group Dre was in was nearly impossible at the time without talking to savvy record store employees in L.A. or New York.
July 3, 20159 yr OMFG, I had no idea what you guys were talking about, so I googled this http://www.cracked.com/article_15826_six-musicians-with-pasts-they-hope-youll-forget.html And found this and THIS I do so love the 80's. PS, THIS was the original Pantera look?!?! I'm laughing at Vinne Paul. I don't think I could imagine anyone less comfortable in the glam look. Well, maybe my dad.
July 3, 20159 yr PS, THIS was the original Pantera look?!?! I'm laughing at Vinne Paul. I don't think I could imagine anyone less comfortable in the glam look. Well, maybe my dad. LOL--I remember seeing them at Flash Gordon's on Lorain Ave back in the late 80's---they were still rocking this look, though reeling it in a bit....
July 10, 20159 yr oh gawd this is so dam funny i can't even! PIRATE RADIO STATION PLAYS GETO BOYS FOR MONTHS, MIDDLE-AGED WHITE GUY WITH KIDS GETS PISSED It was reported by Local 12 WKRC-TV news last week that a pirate radio station in Cincinatti had been playing nothing but gangsta rap group, the Geto Boys, for months until a concerned citizen made a call to the FCC. lots more: http://dangerousminds.net/comments/pirate_radio_station_plays_geto_boys_for_months_middle_aged_white_guy
July 10, 20159 yr I have been renting a car all month while my car was in the body shop. The rental doesn't have satellite so I have been listening to FM. I listen to 88.3 WAIF and 89.7 WNKU a lot (even in my car) and I noticed there was an extra station in between but I didn't stop to listen.

The newsworthy part to me is that anyone bothers with pirate radio today. Pump Up The Volume isn't completely dated I guess....
July 18, 20159 yr mia comes back to hit another home run with her 2-4-1 video short: http://www.fuse.tv/videos/2015/07/mia-swords-matahdatah-video-short-film
July 27, 20159 yr Nine Inch Nails never fails to put on a great show. This is from their most recent tour (2013). If you've never really listened to them, this is a pretty good place to start. It starts pretty radio friendly, jumps into their old, harder stuff, then goes back into some of the lighter, newer stuff. They definitely have a great live production and the had the best light show I've ever seen live or online from any band.
August 6, 20159 yr One of my favorite new songs in a long time. "Future People" by Alabama Shakes (at Lollapalooza). Surprisingly high quality for a fan video.
August 7, 20159 yr fifteen cool places to see a concert: http://www.businessinsider.com/amazing-concert-venues-around-the-world-2015-7?utm_content=buffer2b558&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer
August 21, 20159 yr Five years ago, The Greenhornes reunited and played a show at The Comet. It was totally packed--not only inside, but outside their windows with people looking in.
August 31, 20159 yr Cincinnati's own Eric Nally of Foxy Shazam is prominently featured in Macklemore's new song "Downtown". They performed at the MTV VMAs yesterday and released a music video last week. The Macklemore parts aren't especially good. Nally steals the show. Here's the music video. For anyone curious, it was filmed in Spokane. And here's a version of the song where they cut out everyone's vocals except Nally's and the chorus behind him.
August 31, 20159 yr ^ lol is that the foxy shazam guys name? i have seen mr. eric nally every single time i have been to asbury park in the last few years for events. even when they are not playing there. he is unmissable even from blocks away!
September 1, 20159 yr Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes) is in a side project with members of Fly Golden Eagle and Clear Plastic Masks called "Thunderbitch" (there is a band already called Thunderbitch with almost no following and is the only result in Youtube right now). They are streaming their first full album for free on their website. Take a listen! It's a little heavier and more rock n roll than Alabama Shakes.
September 4, 20159 yr Electronic artists Until the Ribbon Breaks with rap duo Run the Jewels. They work really well together. Hopefully they collaborate more.
September 9, 20159 yr Merle Haggard sez all new country music is crap, because it is: http://rare.us/story/when-asked-for-his-thoughts-on-current-country-music-merle-haggard-didnt-hold-back/

October 13, 20159 yr Saxophonist for The Stooges just died this week. Here it is, the closing track of the hardest-rocking album of all-time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bX275Crxxc Hey people quit listening to lame stuff! These records were the soundtrack of about half of the parties I was at or threw in college, as well as all-nighters.
October 31, 20159 yr Look at me go So it's Halloween And you feel like dancin' And you feel like shinin' And you feel like letting loose Oh, whatcha gonna be Babe, you better know And you better plan Better plan all day Better plan all week Better plan all month Better plan all year You're dressed up like a clown Putting on your act It's the only time all year You'll ever admit that I can see your eyes, I can see your brain Baby, nothing's changed I can see your eyes, I can see your brain Baby, nothing's changed Because you're hiding in a mask Take your fun seriously No, don't blow this year's chance Tomorrow your mold goes back on After Halloween, after Halloween You go to work today You'll go to work tomorrow Shit faced tonight You'll brag about it for months Remember what I did Remember what I was Back on Halloween But what's in between Where are your ideas You sit around and dream For next Halloween Why not everyday, are you so afraid What will people say Why not everyday, are you so afraid What will people say After Halloween, after Halloween, after Halloween Because your role is planned for you There's nothing you can do But stop and think it through But what will the boss say to you And what will your girlfriend say to you And the people out on the street they might glare at you And what do you know you're pretty self conscious too So you run back and stuff yourselves in rigid business costumes Only at night to score is your leather uniform exhumed Why don't you take your social regulations Shove 'em up your ass
December 4, 20159 yr So Scott Wyland finally died. Yawn. I never liked him or Stone Temple Pilots because that group was almost entirely humorless and their songs didn't make any sense. I mean seriously -- what the hell were all those overplayed songs about? What issues were being raised? Was there some call to action I wasn't tuned into? Compare their catalog to the Dead Kennedy's song posted above -- almost every song by every good punk and hardcore band has a very clear direct message or satirical setup. This is I think the only STP song I looked forward to hearing when it came on, because it was campy and a bit of a romp. But even this one they held back on a little bit...the pick slide is a little too constrained, for example. It's not some totally over-the-top sleazy guitar like Mick Mars or that pick slide intro to Danzig's She Rides. I do like the off-balance Peter Gunn bite-off bass, then the half-ass Jumpin' Jack Flash reference, then the falsetto. This is pretty good songwriting because they packed a lot of cheapness into one song so you know it's not an accident. But if you're going for it, well GO for it, I say.
December 4, 20159 yr So Scott Wyland finally died. Yawn. I remember that Layne Staley and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez from TLC both died in the same week. MTV shut down all programming for a week in order to memorialize Lopez while saying, "Oh by they way, Layne Staley also died." Boy did I and a lot of other rock fans get cranky. Everybody knew Alice In Chains was more important musically, and history has nearly forgotten TLC as a pop band for little girls. But at the time, I didn't think about how much harder those little girls were taking Lopez' death than a bunch of 16-40 year old male rock fans that were already jaded enough to know that hard drugs will get you.

December 10, 20159 yr It's been quite a while, that's for sure. They're depressing. Cincinnati actually has zero strip joints.
December 11, 20159 yr Anyone else remember this song? Is this a "lost masterpiece"? I think this aired on MTV about 8 times in the summer of 2001. Finally(?) somebody put it on Youtube:
January 3, 20169 yr good grief! rick springfield gets frozen in the early 1980s, wakes up in 2016 & can't even last a whole song there:
