We went to the Beachland Ballroom last night to see Kishi Bashi. Amazing show. How that guy isn’t a huge star is mystifying.

I guess Mickey Dolenz is the only one still alive. Although Michael Nesmith wrote a lot of their songs, Pleasant Valley... is by Carole King. I didn't know he wrote the song Different Drum, which became Linda Ronstadt's first huge hit (with the Stone Poneys). (and if that wasn't enough, his mother invented Liquid Paper-- lol)

There was a question posed to me a few weeks ago, "which celebrity deaths affected you the most?" After some thought I answered "Peter and Davey from the Monkees."

Sad that the people who seemed forever young in my mind were now dying of old age.

I know, I don't even want to see current pictures of all those stars from the 60's. It's like going to a high school reunion decades later and not recognizing half the people! Not that I've ever done that. I just rely on social media for updates-- lol

If you grew up in NE Ohio in the 60's & 70's, the hottest, most listened-to radio station was not located in Cleveland, or for that matter in Ohio. It was CKLW in Windsor, Ontario. In fact, at least in my location, this station came in more clearly than any other.  At 50K watts, CKLW played a mix of rock, Motown, even Frank Sinatra, and everything selected seemed to eventually rise to the top across the nation. Who knew this woman, who started out as a switchboard operator at the station and rose to music director, was responsible for most of this??

I remember CKLW as the only AM station I could receive on my bicycle radio that played music.   RIP.

Thinking of this made me look up the radio--it was an Archer "Road Patrol" that mounted on the handlebars and had a horn button.  I thought I was hot $hit!

Canadian content rules pretty much spelled the end of the Big 8 as a music powerhouse, though it retained influence.    At least in the inner burbs away from the Lake, early to mid 70s was WIXY, until WMMS emerged.

John Gorman's Facebook page talks a lot about CKLW and its influence.

cklw? now there is a blast from the past.

yeah cklw was yuuugggee in the late sixties and early seventies.

i remember my babysitters had it on all the time -- and we did too.

all the hits.

they loved their elton john, the archies, sweet, all that poppy white pop.

and you could not escape that illegal in the usa broadcasting power.

then in the mid seventies it started playing terrible weird music and quickly fell off.

i guess that was when they were forced to play canadian muzak.

but it was worse than that, the format went over to all oddball adult mall muzak crap.

i dk what that was, but cklw was quickly forgotten.

also, yeah, the rise of higher quality signal fm radio in general just killed am radio, at least for music.

We got to hear many Canadian artists first on CKLW before they became popular in the US.

I don't know how you meant this comment, but CKLW, since it was right across from Detroit, was probably the first mainstream music station to popularize Motown. I remember in the sixties, it seemed half the artists they played were Black. I've read a couple of obits for Rosalie Trombley. This, from the Detroit Free Press:

"She also took cues from Black radio in Detroit, helping break artists such as the O’Jays and the Foundations to pop audiences. In 1971, she was among the first programmers who helped make a hit out of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” a record initially resisted by Motown chief Berry Gordy."

“If I picked music just to suit my taste, I wouldn’t have my job,” she said in 1971. “I lean heavily toward soul music. I find it hard personally to be critical of any Diana Ross record, for instance.”

"Trombley loved Detroit and spent much time in the city, visiting clubs such as the Grande Ballroom to catch rock and soul performers."

“If the latest R&B act coming up was playing, she’d go over,” said Tim Trombley. “She was accepted with open arms by the Black music community.”

^ clearly - or maybe not no clearly — i was talking about the early 70s and the end of cklw — i dk the early years of it.

no idea.

except i do know that it was a station on the same page as wolfman jack’s blasting around the usa from mexico. those illegal am radio days are a lost era for sure.

if you like joni mitchell you will like this interview -- i dk the song, but it was interesting to read about the hippie 70s era:

For 50 years, the “mean old daddy” immortalised in one of Mitchell’s best-loved songs has been an enigma. Now he tells his side of the story.

Is the CD Revival an Actual Thing?

Indie record stores and Gen Z listeners attest: In a small but meaningful way, the silver discs are enjoying a cultural renaissance.

By Marc Hogan

...

In a wild instance of technology folding in on itself, many young fans proudly display their CD collections on TikTok.

“Just as vinyl TikTok is a thing, so is CD TikTok,” Mello notes.

Other record stores are also slinging jewel cases like it’s 1999. Elsewhere in New England, Bull Moose saw sales of new and used CDs surge 20 percent last year, says Chris Brown, CFO of the Portland, Maine-based indie chain.

“People shouldn’t dismiss the 1 percent growth,” he observes. “That’s huge after several years of declines.”

^ I don't see CDs taking off in a way that vinyl did.

A band from Czechia called The Silver Spoons came out with an album that I'm really into lately. They have an English born singer (all lyrics in English), but I believe the rest of the band is Czech.

here's a classic throwback -- driving around boston to the modern lovers classic rock hit roadrunner video. the song was certainly favored by wmms when it came out. i dk when the video was made, the song was recorded in 1972, but not released until 1976, so probably then. looks like they ran out of footage, so it it loops, or maybe that's on purpose i dk, and also the digitization here is a little wonky, but still its a fun time capsule.

this early version of the modern lovers were led by jonathan richman and included ernie brooks on bass, david robinson (the cars) drumming and jerry harrison (talking heads) keyboards.

I have been tearing through YouTube trying to find bands similar to the Midnight.

Gunship, Timecop1983, FM-84 come very close, but I'm starving for more of that futuresynth 80s style music with lyrics.  A lot of the recommendations on google/reddit seem to solely be instrumentals, which are fine, but I need the singers there too.

PSA that the best band to have emerged from the UK in the last 10 years are touring the US for only the second time. Most of their shows on the coasts are sold out, but the ones at Ace of Cups in C’bus and the Grog Shop, on May 12 & 13 respectively, still have tickets left. You can thank me later.

Damn!! I wish I'd known they were coming to town. Still not the same without Florian Schneider.

Yeah. For some reason, it really wasn’t publicized that much.
Although it’s a bit odd to say this about four blokes who just stand there, you’re right about Florian. First time I’ve seen them since 2004ish and it was different, though still brilliant.

Been on a Futurecop, Timecop 1983, Gunship, and still the Midnight run lately.

i forgot all about this here crazy and fun record,  its ‘loves secret domain’ a 1991 record by coil, with guests marc almond and little annie.

this one is for if you have ever had one of those morning afters — with the memorable little annie err, chorus — wATs It LiKE In oHIo? 😂

^ Coil were great. They occupied the ‘experimental, but accessible’ zone that lay between Throbbing Gristle, who were often-times just too much and Psychic TV, who were simply awful.

Was at Radio City right before Covid. A beautiful venue.

I’ve been back at gigs since the start of this year. Next up, Napalm Death at the Grog Shop in a few weeks.

TIL Napalm Death still tours!

I somehow missed the boat on Built to Spill for, like, 20 years, but I've rectified that by listening to There's Nothing Wrong WIth Love pretty much on repeat the last month and a half.

And tour hard, all over the world. This will be the 5th time I’ve seen them in Cleveland alone since about 2016.
I also made a mistake, before ND, I’ll be seeing the magnificent Melt-Banana at the same venue the week prior.

I probably have seen them but didn't know the name. There's also a large group with electric guitars around I've seen in Union Square. Don't know the name either or if it's an impromptu thing or what. Then there's that guy who does the Sinatra karaoke.
