October 23, 20159 yr I thought the casino was going to be directly involved in a "workforce" housing development in Pendleton? Or maybe I'm just getting confused with the streetscape improvements... I used to go to the casino fairly often when it opened, but hardly any anymore. I liked it when they mailed out the coupon book with the free bet coupons, I would ride my bike there and play it and then walk out, win or lose. And also swiped my rewards card at the promotions kiosk. But then they stopped mailing me the books, and the promotional drawings were all at weird times on Saturdays and you had to be there in person for them. I guess they figured out I wasn't one of their "core customers" pretty quick. I'd be more inclined to go there if I felt like I was getting a great deal/ getting something for free more often, like food or drink (don't they do that in Vegas?) I really like Bobby's Burger Palace in there. www.cincinnatiideas.com
October 23, 20159 yr Casinos sit in isolation, out in the cold, nearly everywhere in the U.S. except Vegas by design. They don't want you to leave or interact with the rest of the area.
October 23, 20159 yr Ohio bet on gambling didn’t meet expectations Posted: 12:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2015 By J. Scott Trubey - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution leveland — Gamblers stream from a parking deck across a glass bridge over Prospect Avenue to the floor of the Horseshoe Casino. After they’ve struck it big, or emptied their wallets, they stream back across the bridge, climb into their cars and drive home. Few seem to set foot on the street outside. “People who go to the casino come downtown and gamble and then go home to the suburbs,” said Gabe Wojnarowski, a barista at a nearby coffee shop. Their business, he said, stays inside the casino. Perhaps no state has embraced casino gambling in recent years as much as Ohio. In 2009, voters approved a change in the constitution allowing the Cleveland casino and three others. Ohio separately allowed video slot machines at seven horse tracks throughout the state to fill budget gaps. In just a few years, Ohio went from no casino-style gaming parlors to 11. MORE: http://www.myajc.com/news/business/ohio-bet-on-gambling-didnt-meet-expectations/nn7sn/ I'm not buying this article... The headlines and first few paragraphs make it seem that the casinos are a failure in Ohio while, in actuality, all it presents is one pissed off/bitter barista in some unknown coffee shop (the article neither names the shop or its owner) and quote him like he's some economics expert, and then they state that gambling ballot booster's claims of employment were overblown ... duh? Isn't this usually the case? But the article goes onto state the casino's have netted $700M while the racinos, $450M, which the article concedes is a lot of cash for the state. It also notes that, in Cleveland, the Horseshoe has boosted tourism -- despite the claims of some angry guy slinging coffee at an unnamed shop downtown. And even though it said Phase II hasn't been built, it didn't say that Phase II was dead; indeed, the writer notes that Phase II is still being studied. I think reality, esp in Cleveland, is not nearly as bad as this article paints it.
October 24, 20159 yr people are frustrated because the phrase 'urban fabric' was thrown around when gilbert was lobbying for the amendment. instead, they knocked down two buildings and put a parking deck with a bridge. Phase II wont be built for a long time and the reason is not engineering issues, as they've claimed. Phase I is too small and cramped. While the casino in cleveland is certainly not a failure and is an asset for downtown, it didn't live up to its billing
January 9, 20187 yr Ohio's "Casino Fever" from a few years back seems to have calmed down considerably. But my local paper published the 2016 and 2017 revenue reports for the state's four casinos and seven racinos. Below is a chart of that report from http://www.dispatch.com/business/20180109/columbus-casino-was-tops-in-ohio-in-revenue-in-2017 Kind of interesting to look at how things have shaken out: - Total casino & racino revenue is increasing, with every location seeing an increase from 2016 to 2017 (except for the Jack Casino in Downtown Cleveland, which was down 1.0%). Hard Rock Northfield Park, a racino in the Cleveland Metro, was the highest-grossing overall location. Hollywood Casino on Columbus' west side was the highest-grossing casino location. The seven racinos - which feature slot machines operated by the Ohio Lottery and are located in suburban locations - had more total revenue than the four casinos which are operated by private companies and located in more urban locations. Individually however, the casino locations are all higher-grossing sites than the racino sites (except for the Northfield Park racino).
January 9, 20187 yr That's crazy that Northfield is the highest grossing. I've been to Thisledown, which also has slots. I know the slots are where they make their money, not horses, but Thisledown has thoroughbred and Northfield has harness. Last I heard, you couldn't bet triple crown races at Northfield. It surprises me that Northfield would be making that much more than Thisledown. Don't they both have just slots? Does Northfield have more or something? I'd personally think that Thisledown is in a better location for people of NE Ohio to go to, or am I wrong on that? Could it be the music venue contributing to that?

April 11, 20196 yr Ohio considers sports betting bill A Greater Cincinnati representative is one of two legislators who have proposed a bill that would legalize and regulate sports betting in Ohio. Rep. Brigid Kelly, D-Cincinnati, and Rep. Dave Greenspan, R-Westlake, created the legislation in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision to allow states the ability to offer legalized betting on professional and college sports. “At its core, this bill is intended to provide additional funding for public education in Ohio by making sports betting legal,” Greenspan said in a statement. “The format and structure of the bill provides clarity as to the authority overseeing sports betting in Ohio while providing flexibility to address opportunities and challenges facing this newly legalized industry.” More below: https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2019/04/11/ohio-considers-sports-betting-bill.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
April 11, 20196 yr Instead of funding "education" in general, why not use it to fund "college education" Use it to make Ohio Colleges affordable for the masses and keep Ohio's top students at home.

September 13, 20222 yr While doing research on another project in Lorain, I came across a series of articles dating back to 1985 when the closed shipyards along Lake Erie and the Black River were acquired by Alan Spitzer. Spitzer later proposed a massive $450 million resort-casino that ultimately failed because of a defeat of a statewide referendum in 1990. Well organized church groups and others torpedoed the effort partly because it would have created a monopoly. Lorain would have had the first casino in the state and Spitzer would have had a monopoly for three years during which time it would be evaluated. If found successful, the state would have been divided into 7 gaming districts. If only it had developed, would it have been enough to offset to massive losses the city had experienced in employment? (20,000 jobs from 1975-1990)
