COLUMBUS - Mike DeWine and Sherrod Brown found one last thing to disagree over on the day after their U.S. Senate race ended: whether a Democratic congressional majority would bring gridlock or progress to Washington.

After surging to a House majority on Election Night, Democrats apparently grabbed control of the Senate late last night and would control both chambers on Capitol Hill. The clincher is in Virginia, where the Democratic challenger clung to a less-than 10,000 vote lead in a race that could get a recount.

Mr. Brown, a Democratic congressman from Avon, helped his party gain ground in the Senate by unseating Mr. DeWine, a two-term Republican.

Sherrod Brown speaks his mind, confidently and often loudly. The senator-elect won’t hesitate to use the Senate’s considerable parliamentary powers to stall or stop legislation that goes against his grain. His style conjures memories of Ohio’s Howard Metzenbaum, another Democratic populist who prowled the Senate floor, thundering against Republican administrations and initiatives. After retiring in 1995, Metzenbaum was replaced by Republican Mike DeWine, whom Brown defeated Nov. 7.

But Brown says he also will show off his ability to compromise when he is sworn in to a Democratic-run Senate in January, leaving behind years of frustration as a minority member in a House in which even a narrow majority can rule almost completely.

Brown, 54, says he understands the need for bipartisanship in the Senate, especially one in which Democrats will hold a one-seat majority.

WASHINGTON - Democrat Sherrod Brown, newly elected from Ohio, made his first speech on the floor of the Senate on Thursday. He used his time to focus on the need to rebuild the middle class, starting with raising the minimum wage, and bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq.

Brown, who defeated Republican Mike DeWine in November, told lawmakers that the Medicare drug bill, energy bill and recent free-trade agreements are examples of legislation Congress has approved to help big business over hard-working Americans.

"A woman in Cincinnati suffering from hypertension, high blood pressure and diabetes, told me - with fear in her voice - that she was about to fall into the doughnut hole in the new Medicare prescription drug law. She needs help, but she was hiding it from her family. 'I'm so ashamed,' she sobbed, as if this mess is her fault," he said.

WASHINGTON — As he relaxed in a small room that serves as his temporary office on Capitol Hill, Sen.-elect Sherrod Brown vowed that "you’re going to see real action here," declaring that the Senate would swiftly raise the minimum wage, revise ethics rules and provide more money to help students pay for college.

When he got to the next item, though — altering a prescription-drug bill to allow the federal government to negotiate lower drug prices for seniors — Brown was less hopeful. He said that changing that law "is the hardest because of the power of the drug industry and the amount of money they’ve given to the White House and Senate Republicans."

The reference to Republican campaign money was a staple of Brown’s speeches last year as he unseated GOP Sen. Mike DeWine. But to get to the Senate chamber where he will take the oath of office today as Ohio’s newest U.S. senator, Brown relied on more than $10 million from donors who do not shrink from advocating their own agenda.

Oh, the whirlwind life of a U.S. senator. It's apparently enough to dizzy an ardent foe of the Iraq War like our Sen. Sherrod Brown into mistakenly voting opposite to what he'd intended.

That's exactly what happened when Brown cast his vote Tuesday on a measure involving a deadline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. Brown favors the deadline but somehow goofed and voted against it, according to an item in The Washington Post. For one amazingly un-Brown moment, our senator had blundered into the Bush camp on Iraq.

Lucky for him, staffers caught Brown's gaffe in time and he was able to correct his vote and help Democrats get their way, much to the dismay of Bush.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Freshman Sen. Sherrod Brown is having a busy week on the bill introduction front.

This afternoon, the Ohio Democrat is joining with other Senate Democratic freshmen in unveiling a proposal to set up an independent commission to keep tabs on the taxpayer-funded private contractors operating in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hundreds of billions of dollars is being spent without enough accountability and federal oversight, Brown says, adding that the lawmakers hope to see the commission legislation included in a pending defense bill.

Also today, Brown joined with veteran Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia in introducing a bill aiming to make health care coverage more affordable for workers who lose their jobs because of the fallout from foreign trade deals or companies moving plants overseas. The so-called health coverage tax credit that exists now as part of the law aiding trade-displaced workers is too complicated and expensive, Brown says, adding that only about eight percent of the 15,000 Ohioans eligible for the tax credit actually use the benefit.

I do not see Beshear in Congress unless he eventually runs for Yarmouths old seat someday. He will certainly face tough re-election next year, but he delievered on this project so it will certainly be a race. Of course, the Republicans will have to run someone sane to win. Beshear certainly needs to attribute his win to the fact that he ran against Matt Bevin who pissed off everyone in the state and also the majority of GOP state leadership.

Cameron will have the baggage from the Breonna Taylor case that he will have to deal with, but obviously, the fact KY is a pretty red state will help him. Beshear, certainly is not a bombastic individual and his demeanor may engender support with the suburban voter who is comfortable with the incumbent.

Bevin has been making the rounds and talking to donors. Definitely not a done deal, but he's considering getting into the race. Filing deadline is Friday so we'll find out soon.

Don't count out Kelly Craft. Political experience for decades, worked under Trump as the ambassador to Canada (in a state that voted for Trump by a huge margin), married to a billionaire which has to help her campaign funds. Also she is a good speaker and attractive to look at which doesn't hurt. I think she's gotta be a favorite.

Beshears was almost as bad as Whitmer on the virus and lost a lot of ground there, he's been nicknamed "Bluegrass Swallwell" but that's mostly appearance based. But keep in mind Rand Paul got 62% of the vote last year, five points better than McConnell did.

I like Sherrod Brown and think he's right about what's going on here with China bypassing the tariffs, but Biden's right that removing the tariff suspension would decimate solar installations until the US can increase their production.

I was in line to get solar installed last summer and the company doing it was basically in a holding pattern as the Auxin Solar complaint was handled, and they scrambled to source different panels. After Biden put the tariff pause in place, everything settled out and they were able to finally get the job done, but it was an industry-wide problem in the US.

I'd just let the tariff pause ride out so installers have some time to line up new sourcing and domestic manufacturers ramp up production. I'd imagine Sherrod knows that's what's going to happen either way with the Biden veto and he's making sure to stick up for Ohio solar manufacturing.

I never heard of a single thing Sherod Brown did until this contested election. He blames Bernie Moreno when he was a car dealer who sold foreign cars for the loss of GM in Lordstown. He was a senator with immense power to keep GM in Ohio. What did he do? Nothing. Why blame Bernie? I just saw him advocating for a Coast Guard station in Ashtabula. WOW!! Must not have been any kittens for him to rescue today.

Most political ads are stupid. I'm not sure I've seen the specific ad you're referring to but I'd imagine the point of the ad is to underline the hypocrisy of a man who is running under the "America First" banner making his money off of selling foreign luxury cars. I'm sure is also part of a broader narrative of Bernie's questionable business practices when running his dealerships.

The Youngstown/Warren area is also no longer reliably Democratic... Mahoning County went for Trump in 2020 and Vance in 2022.

Not that I'm confident that Brown will win, but he is a much stronger politician than the statewide candidates in the last several cycles and has a strong enough independent political identify with Ohio voters that I'm not sure how much Biden's weakness will be reflected on him.

I'm going to swerve here a little bit because I hear this a lot and its been bothering me, but I don't understand the conventional wisdom that Tim Ryan was a strong candidate that ran a good campaign. JD Vance was a very bad candidate. Vance didn't start campaigning until the end of the summer and the RNC had to step in to kick off the ad campaign. Ryan had the profile and a winning playbook from Brown for how a populist Democrat can win Ohio and he instead leaned into xenophobia and nativism. I still voted for Ryan, but it was very much a reluctant vote. I imagine there were Democrats that were completely turned off by his campaign messaging. And I'm not sure those are persuadable issues for independent or Republican leaning voters Ryan was trying to target.

The counter to this is that Vance ran far behind all other statewide Republicans, but again, I think that speaks more to his weakness as a candidate than Ryan's strength. Maybe this is just post hoc rationalization in convincing myself that Ohio isn't as red as it appears, but I think that was a very winnable election and Ryan absolutely blew it.

Anyway, in addition to the limited polling on the Ohio Senate race that looks good for Brown, we have some more good data points.

Speaking of things Senator Brown has delivered for the people of Ohio; from what I know Brown was instrumental in getting this grant for Cuyahoga and Lake counties.

The commercial was about Moreno going on talk radio and blatantly lying by saying, “The Buick Envision was made in China, I told General Motors I wouldn't sell one of them, don't even ship it to me,” meanwhile, in reality, his dealership was ... you will never believe this ... selling Buick Envision SUVs that were made in China.

Yeah I agree that pretty much all campaign commercials are dumb, but this one is pretty cut and dry.
